ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

    Decided to purchase “The Bat”

I’m a first year player, so after seeing my results over the 1st week, I decided I needed more help…87 contests entered, -$44.00 profit…YIKES!!! Spent most of the morning doing research, so hopefully i’ll see some better results incorporating this tool in my research. Good luck today everybody!

Let me know how it goes? I’m curious about it, but don’t want to pay that huge amount right up front for something I don’t even know is worth it.

I’ve performed lots of tests to maximize the accuracy of various components of the system (i.e. how many years of data to use and in what proportion, etc.), but I haven’t compared the accuracy of the final projections to anything. I’d need something to compare it to (Vegas, other systems, etc.) for something like that to hold any meaning, and I didn’t have the technical skills or time to pull that kind of information together last year with everything going on. It is something I’m planning on doing this year, though, as I expect the processes of the system itself to cause it to perform well in this regard.

Thanks. Your response has been enlightening.

Does this product have better updates than the Rotogrinders lineup optimizer? Today for example I went to the lineup optimizer page and just to see how it works I clicked on generate lineup and it gives me in my lineup Mike Zunino and Nick Franklyn. They both were optioned to the minors well before the season even started. Granted its free but cmon at least should be kept up to date. Hopefully the BAT provides more updated projections for the cost.

Well, first day went well!! Had my first profitable day this year, finished 9th in a $1 gpp

  • Hendawg

So far so good here, won 4 $2 fanduel monster tickets in 2 days, also finished 15th in $25 gpp

RG projections are updated throughout the day and players are removed based on confirmed lineups. I’m not sure how those guys would show on any of our pages, if they have no projections. If you look very early in the morning you will see a much larger player pool with projections, since we initially add most players then adjust. I will take a look into it, thanks.

Why aren’t the padres included in the projections right now?

Checking now. Looks like a temporarily error, should be fixed very soon, sorry.

Update – this is now fixed

Why don’t you gauge the accuracy of your predictions by future testing it with actual results. Keep track of how a player compares a month from now to the projection made today. I’m a software developer working on programs that predict future prices and we do this all the time.

Right, but you need a control group to compare it to. Seeing what the average error or the RMSE or whatever you want to use is doesn’t really mean anything without context for whether that number is good or bad.

I plan on buying it after reading some reviews here. Plan on using it to win a 100,000 in the Tuesday MLB million dollar contest.

  • natelr14

    That was funny Headchopper

I have RG Incentive for MLB and love It. I am really interested In purchasing the bat, but I really don’t want to invest In both. I think I might be leaning to purchase the bat after the reviews.

Are the lineup updates not very timely? For example STL and PHI have been out for a while and are not yet updated. Also, is it possible for the show all hitters page to have a unique URL? It is annoying to refresh and then have to click the all button each time.

They’re now there after a refresh.

  • RazzleDazzle

The lineups in THE BAT are very slow to update. For example right now, THE BAT is still showing an out of date Astros lineup even though the official lineup has been out for a while (15 minutes ago). It’s not very usable until this is fixed in my opinion… Can THE BAT use the same lineups as shown in the main RG projected lineups page?

  • johnnydark

Just bought THE BAT and have to say I’m impressed. Thanks for all the work.

Another example, TEX, KC, and OAK lu’s have been out for a while and are not updated or listed as confirmed. For a premium product, the updates should be very timely.

Sorry, just saw this, but those are all showing on our end. – Please email support@rotogrinders.com if you see this occur again. If there’s an issue, the support team will track it down, and resolve it. — Those types of delays in lineup confirmation should not be occurring.

    1st night using, $70 profit..
Good call on Russell & Taylor.

  • wwhis

When are values updated? Currently The Bat has no salary for Rockies but Lineup Builder does.
