ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

No “The Bat” projections for the games today. Is there a problem?

  • edro990

At what time in the day will the BAT projections be fully loaded? Trout, CarGo, Blackmon among the missing right now. Also, I understand the values are dynamic but why are they different when I use them in LU builder?

  • BogeyTMF

After looking at the BAT for just a little bit, I have a few usability suggestions:

    1. Don’t display players whose teams aren’t scheduled to play that day.
    2. It’s 9:20AM EST and some players on the slate don’t have salary data (none of the pitchers show any salary data.) That’s unacceptable if I’m trying to research.
    3. No ISO numbers? Found this very strange.
    4. You need hover text over all column headers that provide a quick description of the underlying stat.
    5. You need a separate page with detailed descriptions of all the stats you use. I don’t know what HOU03 means for Park, for example.
    6. Some of the marketing materials mention wind/weather, etc. I don’t see anything about weather in the BAT.
    7. I would try and work in Kevin Roth’s weather code (green, yellow, etc.) into a weather outlook column.
    8. Do you confirm lineup positions once they come out? I assume so, but it’s too early in the day to verify this.
    9. There should always be a listing of the days games somewhere above the stats.

  • BogeyTMF

From the FAQ page: “Studies have shown popular “analytical” crutches such as hot streaks, batter vs. pitcher data, un-regressed platoon splits, career in park, home/road, and various other slicing-and-dicing splits”

If home v. road doesn’t matter, why do you have Home field advantage as a column?

  • twotacosfor99c

We really need more visibility into what is going on here. I understand keeping the projection system itself a black box, but we don’t know when it was updated last, what weather forecast it is going with, etc. We don’t even know if it is loading all the teams! Right now, again, there are several teams missing from the page and nothing indicating this is the case. I could maybe see having the system this opaque if we knew it was reliably updating every 5 minutes or whatever, but it is currently very buggy and there is no way for the customer to know what is happening.

  • BogeyTMF

There are 22 teams playing today and data is only loaded for 14 of them. What’s going on there?

  • KillaChap

Hey guys, let me know when the bugs are worked out so I can consider spending the $150. Thanks!

  • rog11sm

I am on the fence with this product, does anybody have anyadvice to sway me in either direction?

    Hey guys,
Sorry for the issues with a few teams missing this morning. I’ve been making some upgrades, and it caused a temporary glitch that caused a few teams to not project. This should be resolved now, and all players should be available. This was also related to the players missing salaries this morning, as those players weren’t in there to be matched on.

  • tvsfrink

I was in a double up or 50/50 (I forget which) last night on DK, and Derek was using the BAT optimized lineup…no matter what you think of him, I gotta respect his putting his money where his mouth is.

I purchased this and will be requesting a refund. Way too many bugs, everyone should be getting a free trial right now since it’s obviously still in a beta phase. Not to mention the projections for last night specifically had the worst Pearson correlation to actual results out of 5 other projection sources that I tested, and it wasn’t even close. Take that with a grain of salt, though, since it was only one day.

Let me address each of these

    1) It shouldn’t be doing this. The way the system works there has to be a game scheduled for anyone to show up. If you notice this let me know, but this shouldn’t be happening, obviously.
    2) See my previous post
    3) The stats that are shown are projected stats. We show the standard triple slash, wOBA, and all of the stats that sites give points for. Because it doesn’t show any actual stats, there’s no real reason to show ISO.
    4) I believe this is something that’s being added
    5) Ah, those are ID codes for parks. These have been updated to show the team abbreviation of the home team whose park it is
    6) Weather is incorporated into the algorithms that run the projections
    7) This is a great idea, something I’m going to see if we can add
    8) Yes, there will be a little check mark next to the opposing team (for pitchers) or the lineup position (for hitters) when the official lineup is being accountd for
    9) This is in the process of being added

If home v. road doesn’t matter, why do you have Home field advantage as a column?

Right, so home field advantage is a real thing. What I mean by this is that there can be a lot of noise in Home/Road splits. Generally, Home/Away splits are comprised of four things: 1) Home Field Advantage, 2) the Park, 3) Random variation, 4) a tiny bit of player Home/Away skill (maybe). THE BAT focuses on the components that hold the most weight and are predictable: home field advantage (hitters at home get a bump up, those on the road a bump down) and the parks that the player has played in in the past and is playing in today. So let’s say Pitcher X has a terrific home pitchers park but for whatever reason has pitched better on the road. The system won’t account for this, instead expecting that to be random since it goes against our expectation and logic, and it will project him to pitch well when he has the home field advantage in his favorable home park.

Players from the PIT@DET and ARI@LAD games are showing up in the 7:05pm 10 game slate on the lineup builder. Can you please remove those players? Thanks.

  • tvsfrink

I noticed that too, with that said you can easily remove the four teams in the lineup builder yourself.

  • DerekCarty

ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

Yeah, for some reason it doesn’t default to them removed. Tech team is looking into it. You should be able to remove them, though, by either clicking the team logos or by clicking a different slate and then clicking back

Bought THE BAT two days ago and used it to help me build a cash lineup last night. I cashed in all of them (both FD and DK) netting me a cool $50. With that said – it projected some players I already liked (Houston stack) but with THE BAT confirming what I was already thinking I had little to no disregard for entering the lilneup into more cash games than I normally would have and it paid off. I had Matz in a good bit of lineups as THE BAT had projected him to do well, but ultimately he blew up. That’s not something that can be predicted, though, so no anger there; that’s just DFS baseball. I’m happy with my purchase so far and I really think it’ll help me win more money that I would without it over the course of the season.

Any bat optimal lineup trains yet ?

  • PavementRunner94

The BAT was on Gio Gonzalez and Charlie Morton tonight. Not two guys that would normally be on your radar. They didn’t kill it, but they had great starts for low-priced #2 guys that allowed for stacking some bats. I think that is one of the strengths I’ve seen so far, is that it is good at identifying great mid-priced or low-priced pitching.

  • Ross

    Hey guys,

Just a heads up that we created a separate support thread for the Lineup Builder. You can find it here or by clicking All Forums at the top of the page, then Support.

@nicslim and our support team will monitor the thread and it should help stop some of the lineup builder specific posts from getting buried in this thread, and provide faster support. I moved a few of the most recent posts from here to that thread and our dev team is looking into them now.

Loved seeing the Morton value at 6.6%. Helped me cash in many of my lineups the DK Milly last night. That play also stood out to me, as one I would not have considered otherwise.

I didn’t read through all 13 pages, so sorry if this has been answered. I do most of my research while at work. I don’t use my work computer for it, so I access RG and other sites from my phone. How workable is THE BAT on a smartphone? Thanks!

I’m not seeing Velasquez in the Lineup builder with BAT projections although VV is showing in the BAT itself
