ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

I see Velasquez in the builder but his salary, on DK, is wrong.

  • baldi41

I’m only showing Velasquez in the BAT with wrong salary

  • twotacosfor99c

I’m having similar problems (only Velasquez showing up for pitcher). I hope it is functioning before too long as the early slate locks within 2 hours today.

Hey guys, the tech team is fixing the ‘only Velasquez showing up’ issue. Should be fixed shortly. Thanks for your patience.

  • twotacosfor99c

    Thanks for the update!

  • SACoconuts

Although I haven’t used it specifically to build lineups from start to finish, it seems to run great on an iPhone 6s Plus. I was able to to do everything I would normally do.

I use it all the time on an iPad.

I guess it might depends on which smartphone you have and your eyesight, as to how workable it is. But it appears to function fine.

I think the Bat was telling people that you only should play Velasquez on FD. No other pitcher matters. Play Velasquez! Hehe

  • tvsfrink

He’s still showing up even with the 7pm slate selected…

I haven’t used with THE BAT yet, but I use “table capture” ( a chrome extension), which makes copy/pasting tables even simpler.

The optimization algo is calculating optimal lineups incorrectly. Right now, it’s posting an optimal lineup that uses $34,500 and projects for 129.34 points. I can swap to a different catcher and get the projected total to 129.8 and stay under the cap. Until you can get this right, you should allow us to export projections so we can use some other tool. I need confidence that your builder is working properly or all of Derek’s work in projecting well is moot.

  • tvsfrink

I noticed that too, although I don’t mind so much because I want to tweak the lineups it spits out anyway. Wouldn’t be any fun if I just used an optimal one.

“You can copy/paste into excel easily”

Actually, you can’t, or at least not in a way that’s useful. When you paste as HTML, the projected FPTS display as a VB form field. There’s no way, that I’ve found, to do a simple copy and paster where the projection is a number. This is what it looks like:

    http://imgur.com/Rwv2cps

You can’t then take those estimates and work with them as a formula or export them as a csv, etc. As you can see from my post above the lineup optimization algo is not calculating correctly, so I want to export these to Fantasy Cruncher until it’s fixed. I know that’s painful to hear, and apologies, but the BAT is pretty useless to me if I can’t rely on the optimization algos as well.

“ I use “table capture” ( a chrome extension), which makes copy/pasting tables even simpler.”

It’s a great tool, Cameron. Unfortunately, with the way the BAT table is formatted, it doesn’t capture the contents of the VB form field where the projections are. So, the critical piece of data is missing.

Hrm. Ok, sorry. We’ll look into if we can get a CSV added or not. I’ve added it to the list to discuss at the next priority meeting. Thanks.

This was not my experience. I don’t have the bat anymore, so maybe something changed, but I was easily able to copy and paste as simple text into excel and everything was formatted correctly.

if you just want the projections…they are already there.
Just go to setting and click on the link.
It will have the player names and the projections listed.

Bottom left corner of setting tab you will see this….

Download this csv template with today’s players to ensure that the names match when uploading.

If you want both RG and BATS…the table on the bottom right corner of settings tab will have both.

  • wwhis

Then I change DK pitching and pricing to batter it reverts to default FD pricing this morning.

  • pootnami

So strange you guys haven’t offered a monthly subscription for this yet?? What’s the holdup?

  • elijahb12

Are there plans to incorporate a game filter to narrow the field to only the early slate as an example? Maybe I’m missing it if it’s already there.

  • cogs7

i cant get lineup builder/the bat to upload to DK, i do the same process on fantasy labs every day, but not working grom RG`s line up builder. Any suggestions? Tried yesterday, and now today.

  • cogs7

DK shows red letter error, no file. I`ve opened up the csv file and line up is there.
