ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

      RG Overall Ranking

Just purchased yesterday. I assume it typically gets updated more than five hours before the slate begins?

  • oilydave

At what time in the morning does the BAT get reset for the days games?

  • flip4flop

For what its worth it is updated if you use the lineup builder, but its not working on TheBat page itself.

  • wwhis

I just wonder when they will ever get the bugs fixed. It makes my wonder if their information in other areas is correct or updated.
As it is I have doubts about the accuracy of their stats.

  • Ross

    Hey guys,
Sorry, we are working on the issue. In the meantime if you load THE BAT on the lineup builder page you will see today’s data.

  • djc32

It’s not just the BAT, none of the research tools have been updated this a.m. . Same thing happened yesterday, maybe it’s a weekend thing?

  • dingdangdong

I don’t use it for point project

  • dingdangdong

    It’s updated now. Thank you

  • wwhis

I don’t use it for point project either but I do use it for a comparison of players in each days slate. Given todays match ups it would seem to me it could be used to project a best 2nd pitcher if I lock in who I consider number one. I would then like for the available replacements be ranked on the bat projection system rather than salary. I do not use The Bats projections then except as a starting point for further research. I use that same procedure to go through every position in the line up.
I think another improvement could be that players above the salary limit be shown in red in available replacements by position.
It is my understanding The Bat is updated throughout the day for weather and line up locks. I would like to see some posting when it is updated or like this morning some statement that update is being delayed.

I agree with making the players available to replace certain players in red if they are above salary. Also would like to see their team in that pop out window.

I purchased The Bat on Friday. I’m a small daily player and more of an Action Junkie than a studier of stats. Trust me, spending $150 that is not a deposit is pretty out of character for me. I do love and follow baseball though, so it made the purchase a bit easier because I would not purchase a NBA equivalent. Anyway, yesterday I entered a 14 person $27 Satellite and won a $333 entry using The Bat. I’ve done OK in other time slates using The Bat, maybe a few bucks down because I’m a sucker for Moon Shots. However, facts are facts, it took two days for me to already justify the purchase. I just wanted to pass on my first experience using The Bat. Now, I almost feel selfish that I do not want others to take the leap so that I have an edge, haha. Actually, I have no problems sharing with you fine folks. All the best.

How long can The BAT be used before the refund window is closed? This was not addressed. It’s easy to say, “you can be refunded, if you are not happy”. But that could mean 90 days, 60 days, 30 days, or 1 day. I’m curious as to how this works, so I am asking.

glad I waited for them to work out the bugs. anyay can somebody plz tell me what the MU stand for in MUwOBA. as a mlb dfs rookie I think I have about one billion more acronyms to learn. but I need to know this one

  • deebarizo

3 hitters are missing from Houston on the 15 game slate today.

Match-Up Weighted On Base Average (MUwOBA)

  • floydian80

The bluejays hitters are projected based on facing Clay Bucholz. The starter for Boston is Mike Wright, which i would assume give the Bluejay hitters a bump in projection. When will this be updated?

  • skimbad

today, all Toronto bats are wrongly projected. BAT has Boston SP being Clay Buchholz. How can there be such a big error like this?

  • glennantz

Look’s like there are still a lot of bug’s almost on a daily basis. I would think this is why they did not want a trial period or month to month purchase. Am I correct?

  • skimbad

I think it’s a really good product, but when you pay for it, you should expect consistency and trust. It doesn’t do any good when we need to double check these projections are accurate or bug free. Hopefully they’ll get it done, and in one month it’ll be an excellent product.

  • Majorrock

Mistakes are always going to happen…i can live with that.
It does bother me that we have gone all morning and into the main slate without one word from someone on the status of this screw up.
Thanks to those who found this fook up. This at least gave us a chance to change the projections manually.

Going forward i would expect that things such as this are dealt with in a timely manner. Having the wrong pitcher facing batters is not acceptable. Especially when you are talking about the bats that were hosed today. Several Toronto bats should have + matchups today.
