I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

    - Feedback has been received on monthly subscriptions & trials. RG & I are talking over solutions, but in the mean time keep in mind that refunds are possible if you are unsatisfied. Please remember that this is a new product offering to RotoGrinders, and the Tech Team can’t immediately add a monthly or trial at the moment. We’ll continue to discuss solutions long-term, but the refund options is available for those interested in demoing THE BAT.

Sorry for the delay guys we had a few update issues this morning. THE BAT is now updated for today’s games.

    Time for me to vent.

We were asked to keep technical problems out of this thread, and to use the support forum instead. My issues with lineup builder (related to The Bat as I purchased it partly due to its integration with LB), posted in the support forum, have been ignored for over a week. Meanwhile this is handled quickly.

I get that this issue was much easier to address, but to not even acknowledge the problems I’ve been pointing out is very disappointing.

    Venting over (for now).

@Derek How does the BAT differ from what Fantasy Labs does? They seem very similar, but the BAT is offered at a much better price. Just wondering what the differences are before making the change. Thanks

Guy’s its 150 bucks for the season…. if mowing lawns for ur neighborhood cant pay for it then don’t buy it. 20 year old kids spending tuition money.

Any chance we could get a BAT user only forum? For example I’d love to discuss Felix Hernandez projection today with others but don’t wanna take it to the main forum and say, “What do you think the reasoning behind Felix being projected xx.xx is?”

  • codelode84

It is funny that the King was garbage today….. lol

  • deebarizo

Can you check the pitchers’ projections? They are changing wildly after lock. For example, Tanaka was 14 pts at 6pm central time and then at 9pm he was 23 pts. Matt Cain was 18 pts at 6pm. At 9pm, he changed to 13 pts. Those are pretty big shifts so I think something might be going wrong with the programming for pitchers.

  • tvsfrink

Matt Cain shouldn’t be at 18 pts at any point.

    Some people are never happy.

Hmmm, this shouldn’t be happening, at least not wildly. We don’t always have finalized information at lock (i.e. on the first game of a series when umpire assignments for late games often don’t come in until after lock, a roof update for a park, weather updates for games that haven’t started yet), so the system works with what it has and continues to update up until game time. I didn’t notice anything that night, but I will keep an eye in the future. If you notice anything like this, send an email to either me or the support address so I can look into it right away. Thanks :)

I really like this idea and it’s something we’re discussing. The tricky part is making it exclusive to THE BAT subscribers, so we’ll have to see if we have the tech resources to pull it off.

I also want to make sure everyone knows that I’m always available to answer questions (as soon as possible), either by email or Twitter (email or DMs best for questions that will take more than 140 characters). I have a few users who reach out to me with occasional questions about why a particular player ranks where he does, and I’m always happy to explain what’s going on under the hood to drive a particular projection.

As we saw with Cueto and Bumgarner’s dominance, it was a really good matchup. Expecting Cain to be solid was the reasonable expectation, and Vegas agreed, projecting within 0.05 runs of THE BAT for Colorado that day. Sometimes a terrible pitcher like Cain just gets blown up.

Also, just a heads up, guys, that today there’s a double-header for CHC/SD, and both games are being used in various slates. The UI and Lineup Builder aren’t designed for this, so projections will show up for all four pitches and projections for each hitter against each pitcher. You can’t exclude just the one set of games, unfortunately, so if you’re looking to play hitters or pitchers from these games, just make sure that you’re drawing from the right projection for that game. Sorry for the inconvenience.

i am playing the early slate and drafted Pomeranz. Will his points count even though he is playing in different slate?

    Hi Alex,

It all depends on the rules of the site you are playing as to how they handle doubleheaders.

I am playing on draft kings. Reason i drafted him is because The Bat had him in the early slate and even the projected lineup added him in for the early slate games.

Most likely he will not count. Generally players will only be counted for the game they play in within the contest slate. So the SD/CHC players only count for the first game if you are playing the early games and only for the late game if you are playing late day only.

In the All-Day game slates the sites usually designate one game (typically the later one) as the game that will count.

For this season, I could not find the current rules on DraftKings which is unfortunate, however, I suspect it is as described above.

Here are the rules they had in place in prior years:

    DraftKings – https://www.draftkings.com/help/mlb

    DOUBLEHEADERS
In no instance will we ever combine scores for both games of a doubleheader into a single score for an individual player. DraftKings creates contests based on the starting times for MLB games. We refer to them as “early” or “late”, or based on their individual starting times. When a doubleheader is scheduled well in advance, DraftKings, at its sole discretion, will list either game, or both games, based on the scheduled time for those particular games.

There may be instances where DraftKings is unable to separately list doubleheader games, such as when a doubleheader is the result of a recent postponed game. In these cases, only the originally scheduled game will be used when scoring drafted players.

This is usually because a DraftKings contest has already been created for that MLB game day, and customers may have already drafted teams based on the original game schedule.

Please note that the originally scheduled game may wind up being either game of the doubleheader, so be sure to pay attention to the listed start time when selecting your roster.

  • thealexito

    bummer, thank you.

  • tvsfrink

Why don’t any Rockies players show up in The BAT / Draftpot?

Why don’t any projected player points show up in The BAT / Draftpot?

(While I’m at it, why aren’t any of my lineup builder questions being answered in the support thread OR by email. It’s downright infuriating at this point.)

  • SACoconuts

Im really happy with the BAT overall, I would like to see it more clearly noted, perhaps different colors, when I’m using the BAT projections or the RG projections.

It would also be nice to be able to refresh the teams as lineups are posted, I end up refreshing the page, which sometimes leads to the projections reverting to the RG projections, or so it seems.
