ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    Purchase THE BAT Here

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

    - Feedback has been received on monthly subscriptions & trials. RG & I are talking over solutions, but in the mean time keep in mind that refunds are possible if you are unsatisfied. Please remember that this is a new product offering to RotoGrinders, and the Tech Team can’t immediately add a monthly or trial at the moment. We’ll continue to discuss solutions long-term, but the refund options is available for those interested in demoing THE BAT.

    - IMPORTANT NOTE: – Please keep all posts on-topic with questions related to THE BAT. Any posts about the industry as a whole, or not on-topic, will be removed. Thanks, The RG Mod Team

OK, I’m among those that thought if we waited that a monthly plan or price reduction would come. I guess I was wrong. I’m still interested and hopefully can get a few answers from actual users.

    1. How would you say it’s working for 50/50 games?
    2. How much tweaking of the lineups are you doing or are you just using what it spits out?
    3. Has anyone requested and gotten a refund that wasn’t happy with the product?
    4. Is it working better on one site or another?

Thanks for any help anyone can be.

    1. I would not suggest using it for 50/50. With that said, it can be used as a tool to identify players in good matchups that can be used for 50/50s.
    2. I tweak a lot. I go through and adjust based off matchups and remove players i don’t want access to on each slate.
    3. Not requested refund, Happy with THE BAT as a tool. I would not suggest just using it as an optimizer to spit out lineups.
    4. I play on Fan Dual but i only play GPP’s. For me, cash games are a thing of the past. Cash lines are lower in GPP’s this season from what I have seen.

If you want a good tool to identify players to use on a given slate then i would say buy it.
If you want something to just give you a lineup to play each day, then don’t waste your money.

I use the BAT in conjunction with Data i load into my spreadsheets each day from other site like BBM and Fan Graphs. From there i create a player pool that I use to build my lineups.

This so much. I really wish people would understand there is no tool out there that will spit out winning lineups. It simply doesn’t exist or the person creating it would just keep it to himself and get rich, no?

However, I can tell you I have done MUCH better in MLB this year using it, as a tool. I absolutely LOVE it to be honest and have already won more this year in cash games than I did all of last season. Do I pick who it suggests is the best player at each position? Definitely not. Do I look at it after making my lineup and seeing if I missed anything it didn’t? Yep.

Ultimately, any tool out there is just that, a tool. There is no magical program.

Here is a BLOG that might be good reading for you.

Thank you both for the replies. To be clear, I don’t expect a “plug n play” system that will guarantee you 90% winning days. I get it, that just doesn’t happen. I am looking for something that “consistently” turns out cashing lineups should I limit my player pool to the top 5 or so selections from each position.

In other words, if I have to eliminate the top 6 options based on my own work then what good is the tool doing me? While I understand individual performances are impossible to predict with accuracy I do want a tool that at least heads me in the right direction.

Will top picks go 0-5 some nights, sure, but if it’s most nights then what is the point really? If the tool can limit my player pool to 50 or so players then I’m in, if I just have to go through it’s rankings and move every player up or down based on my own knowledge then I guess I don’t really need it.

    Make sense?

It definitely heads you in the right direction, no doubt about it. It had Valencia as a top 10 3rd basemen today for example. He wasn’t originally on my radar that much until I saw that. I actually HAD him in my cash lineup until my dumb butt made a last minute change and replaced him with Franco.

I love the Bat, and even if I had nothing to do with RG, I would subscribe 100%.

Maybe its just me, but i don’t think a (top 5) approach will work with any tool in MLB. The difference between the top guy and the 10th guy at each position on any given day will be minimal. As stated above, it will help you identify some players…make you dig into a player that wasn’t even on your radar to start the day. Maybe you play him or maybe you don’t. Top 5 approach with it i think would cost you tons of money. Especially in cash, you usually need that close to min price guy that gets a start or gets a bump in the lineup. Cash games are about playing the chalk. Identify the chalk and ride with it. There is a reason that 80% of cash lineups had Dietrich at near min price last week when he was leading off…Was he in the top 5? I doubt he was in the top 10 but i may be wrong.

Im really happy with the BAT overall, I would like to see it more clearly noted, perhaps different colors, when I’m using the BAT projections or the RG projections.

It would also be nice to be able to refresh the teams as lineups are posted, I end up refreshing the page, which sometimes leads to the projections reverting to the RG projections, or so it seems.

Glad to hear you’re happy with THE BAT :) Could you clarify this a little more? Is this a request/issue for THE BAT’s integration with Lineup Builder? RG projections should never be showing up on the actual THE BAT pages

  • chanceton14

Looking at peoples profiles that’s purchased bat and their results I don’t see anything special. I will continue to do my 6 hours of research a day and avoid the bat because there’s projections and metrics everywhere. Bat probably should be free, I mean we do pay 30 a month for premium, seems like it should be included. After all the bat is just a tool not guaranteed money.

  • kswetnam1342

If I purchase the BAT now, will it last a full calendar year? If not, will the price be reduced since we are two months into the season?

April and May are busy times for me, so waiting until now makes more sense for me.

Yep, cash games aren’t tracked anymore.

  • tvsfrink

Not just cash games. Results take time to show up. Smaller tournaments aren’t tracked. Smaller sites aren’t tracked. Etc.

  • chanceton14

I’m a tourney only player so wouldn’t it make sense for me too look at the rankings. Kinda elementary to persume someone doesn’t know how the rankings work when you read the rankings page it clearly tells you what is tracked. Defend the bat all you want but I read through 21 pages and seen just as many if not more negative comments concerning bat with several people requesting refunds. With all the problems it has had I don’t know how they could take $150 from someone. As a potential customer I try to educate myself before a purchase furthermore all the negative reviews is really bad for business on their part.

  • kdjac0434

I purchased THE BAT and asked for a refund a few days later and it was promptly granted.

I thought the product was nice. I liked the information it provided. However I didn’t think it was worth the price. In the end it wasn’t different enough from the free rotogrinders projections that were already out there there. It was just another place saying Joe Smith was going to score 10.5 points tonight.

  • Majorrock

It is not for everyone. If used as a tool in conjunction with your other tools, it could be worth the purchase.
I am also a GPP player. about 90% of my games have been GPP this season in the MLB. Up until this past weekend i have bounced up and down…lose a few nights, win a few, break even….etc…but thats expected when playing large field GPPs. When playing against 40,000 others tossing in lineups, you have to have a little luck. You can have the right players in your player pool, but that doesn’t mean they are going to be on the right lineups.

This weekend the BAT paid for itself…for me anyway…$6700 Saturday from the Squeeze….With my $200/$300 a day in entry fees, i feel if i keep doing what I am doing, hopefully I can get another couple of days like this before the season ends…

Honestly, I could care less if someone buys the BAT or not. I don’t make anything from it…i am just answering a question someone asked in regards to the BAT. Buy it or not…I don’t care. :)

And to be very clear, I appreciate your answering me. I’m not looking for anyone to say it’s a bad tool or to bash it in any way. I simply know that not every tool is for everyone and I’m trying to see if this one might work for me before dropping $150 on it. I really don’t mind the $150, especially if there is a money back guarantee, I’m more concerned if this would be right for me.

I’m someone who doesn’t know MLB all that well and doesn’t have 8 hours a day to pour over numbers. I’m looking for something that can cut down the number of players I have to look at and at least give me a competitive line up on a somewhat consistent basis if I put a couple hours a night behind it.

Sounds to me like this isn’t that tool, and to be fair none have been. I may be looking for something that doesn’t exist. If I could do any better on my own I guess I would, but MLB eludes me for some reason.

Honestly, thank you for the input.
