ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

No, the stats that the THE BAT shows are projected stats for that day. SIERA or wOBA against are more useful as descriptive stats that the player has put up to this point in the season. That kind of data is available at so many other places that it would be redundant, and it’s outside the purview of THE BAT to display stats like that (although the things that matter about those stats do influence THE BAT projections).

Ah, that makes more sense. Umpires are definitely accounted for in the final projections. When I said that I have a separate system for umpires, I just meant that umpires have their own complete projection system to determine just how much impact they have on the game. Once I project out the tendencies for each umpire, those tendencies then get applied to the games they’re calling that day and affect the hitters and pitchers appropriately.

Can you try refreshing THE BAT? I see him there now. Derek may have been making a quick update.

Same here – can’t even see the info on mobile, but more importantly, can’t use it the way I want to. Have no issues with the same situation on the free RG projections page, it’s free and RG can do whatever it wants to it. We pay a premium for The Bat though, so hate to see usability take a drop for no good reason. Can you make the data available in .csv? Or go back to the old format?

Hey guys, echoing some of the above posters, the format change makes this pretty hard to use. Needs either .csv download or a format that can be copy pasted (the old one).

    Hi,

Derek and our Development team are discussing the possibly of a CSV or similar, but I do not have a definite answer yet.

The formatting changes made were to increase performance of THE BAT for its intended on-site use. The previous format caused many delays or freeze ups while filtering and searching.

Personally, I do not believe we will be going back to a format that allows copying/pasting or scraping the data directly from the page. Its bad for performance and in some cases is against our terms of service. From a usability standpoint our goal is to allow users to quickly and effectively interact with THE BAT while maximizing usability. Similar to the updates to our projections page, this new format is much more efficient, and user friendly with on-site use.

I will get some more information and get you an update on the CSV option.

Honestly, I don’t know if this fix will happen. It’s a difficult situation with DP right now, since their contests posting is so erratic. They seem to go days at a time (mainly weekends) with no contests posted at all. Between that and the lineup format they use, its a difficult problem to solve. I will check in though, and see if any progress has been made.

    Alright, thanks for the response.

Care to elaborate on the TOS comment?

I agree, copy/pasting wasn’t ideal and the page was super slow, but if your goal is to allow people to interact with it “quickly and effectively”, there needed to be a csv option 2 months ago (at least this solution was implemented and the usability of it was greatly diminished). I get that there’s some people that use the bat as part of a process that only uses the RG site, but for myself (and several others it seems), I’m frustrated because I now feel like I’m paying for something that I’ve been locked out of using.

Sure, most sites including ours have policies against pulling data off the site in their tos.

Here is ours “The Service contains proprietary information, statistics, and projections both original and from other third-party sources. Users of the Service may not engage in unauthorized spidering, “scraping”, data mining or harvesting of Content, or use any other unauthorized automated means to gather data from or about the Service.”

There are many reasons for this including keeping copyrighted or third party purchased data from being posted on multiple sites.
A CSV option is still being discussed. One of the reasons it was not included in the past because we did not want to facilitate people easily sharing the data with someone who hadn’t paid for it. That would be unfair to the users who purchased the product.

    Completely fair points, thanks.

Hopefully you strongly/quickly consider the CSV option. I understand I’m probably the minority, but it’s frustrating as a user (and it’s highly likely I would’ve immediately requested a refund after I bought if the previously available clumsy copy/paste option wasn’t possible)
