ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

    Updates/Notes/FAQ (Last updated April 5th)

    - Feedback has been received on monthly subscriptions & trials. RG & I are talking over solutions, but in the mean time keep in mind that refunds are possible if you are unsatisfied. Please remember that this is a new product offering to RotoGrinders, and the Tech Team can’t immediately add a monthly or trial at the moment. We’ll continue to discuss solutions long-term, but the refund options is available for those interested in demoing THE BAT.

    - IMPORTANT NOTE: – Please keep all posts on-topic with questions related to THE BAT. Any posts about the industry as a whole, or not on-topic, will be removed. Thanks, The RG Mod Team

Anyone that has used this and fantasy labs? How do they compare?

  • CUTiger81

I’m really intrigued by this and very interested in purchasing. I’ll be on the lookout for the video with Derek though so I can get some more info.

So do we all agree that we need a test run first before buying!

This seems like a great product….I would love to hear from a RG staffer on if there is an export feature.

    Hi,

This is something we have been discussing. We’re still working on details, but I should have an answer today.

    Hey Grinders,

Regarding offering a “Trial”, while we are still considering adding this idea long term for products on RG, please note that our Support team is able to issue a refund if you are unsatisfied with the product. — So feel free to purchase, try TheBAT projections and TheBAT in Lineup Builder for a few days, then email support@rotogrinders.com if you are unsatisfied! Sorry for not clarifying that sooner.

Ok, that sounds fair enough. I’m in.

    This is great news.

Will THEBAT break down different projections for different sites besides FD and DK such as Aces? Makes a huge difference in when I decided to give it a go

Although I am interested, I am also hesitant because I am in a state which may ban DFS. If that happens, will those impacted be offer some form of rebate?

My state has already banned DFS and I made the purchase. If you’re questioning its worth if you possibly can’t use it in the future, then it’s probably better for you to not make the investment. For me, I love baseball, season long fantasy and DFS. The challenge of putting lineups together everyday has me hooked, whether it’s for money or for free.

I’ll gladly spend $150 on a tool to help with lineup construction for the entire baseball season instead of blowing it on a night at the bar.

Yes, right now it’s set up for FD, DK, Aces, Feud, Yahoo, DraftDay, and FantasyDraft

  • BmoreClutch

RG has a 7 day trial on incentives. Why can’t the same thing be done for this product?

Also offering a refund is great, but I think there needs to be an exact number of days that we can use the product and still get a refund.

  • Insidethewrappe

It will be interesting to see how the “The Bat” “ model correlates with the Free “CRUZ” model. I’ll be looking at both.

Any plans to include Draftpot at some point?

  • yeahthisiscuddy

I’m not seeing prices, positions, ballparks, or opposing pitchers in there. That’d be a lot more valuable to me than knowing Curtis granderson’s going to strike out 0.13 times per PA. I expected more from the supposed premiere tool on the market.

  • tmspriggs

I don’t need a free trial, but would like monthly pricing. I live in Texas and there is no way to know how long I have until DK follows FD.

If for whatever reason DFS were to be disallowed in your state, we can do pro-rated refunds via our current system, for a situation like this.

  • RabidKeith

I think @cameron is doing a great job of answering concerns by offering refunds.

This sounds like a great product and I look forward to seeing video of the tool in action. But to cut to the chase, if I can only afford one, am I better to spend my money on incentives or on BAT?

  • qatman

I don’t begrudge Derek cashing in on his product, and based on his prior work at BP etc. I am sure it has been successful. I will be interested to see how effective it is when hundreds or thousands of people are using it in the same contests. To me it saps the fun out of playing but I look forward to competing against lots of identical or nearly-identical entries in cash games this year.

  • DatDerFranny

Count me as one of the people who think that BvP actually has some importance and shouldn’t be “filtered out,” but whatever. Looks cool, I guess.

  • RabidKeith

OK, so I followed @Cameron’s advice to give it a try based on understanding that if I’m not satisfied, I can get a refund.

After 5 minutes of trying, I’m undecided.

    A few observations:

Biggest issue is that forecasts are different on the lineups builder page vs. the BAT projection page. For example, Matt Harvey listed at earning about 24 points on lineup builder page on DK (using BAT stats) and just 17 on BAT page. Obviously, this is a big red flag.

As others have mentioned, the BAT page only lists “batters.” Does not allow to sort by position. However, this can be done on RG page.

There doesn’t appear to be an option to export data to Excel on BAT projection page.

The BAT projections page needs to be dated so DFS players can quickly see when it switches over to tomorrow’s games. The tool would be vastly more useful if it also incorporated projections for multiple slates over multiple days. Eg, filter for today’s day slate, today’s night slate, all day slate or tab over to tomorrow’s games.

Your $150 does not allow you to see is behind the numbers. You get the projections, but not what goes into them. A smart data scientist once told me to never pay for an answer if you can’t see the question. These stats could indeed be the best in the business, but there’s no way of validating that they’re as comprehensive as claimed.

Finally, for this to be worth the money, it’s important that RG lineups builder is flawless. Last year, there were occasionally players who were in starting lineups and available on DFS sites but did not get incorporated into lineups builder. Again, lineups builder becomes much better if you can sort by slate and future games.

I’ll continue to evaluate over next couple of days to decide if I’ll seek a refund. Looking forward to hearing about roadmap for these and other improvements.

I haven’t used the bat in the past, but I have used lineups based on Derek’s advice from his model. Like everything, some days you are going to bust out and other days you will cash. I bought it this year and plan to use it as a tool as part of my own analysis. I plan to pay roughly $50-$100 a day, so paying $150 for a whole season seems worth it to me….

IMO, using somebody else’s model and not doing any of the thinking on your own is a slippery slope, but to each their own.

Hi @RabidKeith. Thanks for the feedback!

A few quick notes for “near future” releases related to your feedback:

    - LineupBuilder is currently only working with RotoGrinders projections (even if you’ve purchased THE BAT). This will be fixed as soon as tonight and definitely before Sunday’s games. You’ll be able to switch over and use either our projections or those provided by THE BAT.

    - THE BAT page will be sortable by position. This will be one of our first updates to the pages. It may not be ready by opening day, but it will be filterable by position very soon after. We will also add in salaries and $/pt columns on the main BAT page.

    - Exporting data to CSV (for use in Excel) is something we are still discussing as a company. We haven’t fully decided on whether or not we will provide this but are leaning towards yes.

    - The LineupBuilder already allows you filter players (and create lineups) based on slate. We generally only deal with today’s games until midnight, at which point we will switch over to tomorrow’s slates. It’s also a great idea to put a “last updated” date on both pages, so you can best tell how recently confirmed lineups and news have been incorporated into the numbers.

    - Derek can speak better to this (and refute me if I am wrong), but we will likely not show the formulas that go into the end projections. We don’t do this with RotoGrinders projections because then members could use the raw stats and our formulas to recreate what we provide, and I imagine Derek will have similar reasons to keep his weighted components and formulas “under the hood”.

    - The LineupBuilder has an option now where you can add any player that is not included. This is not an option we had last year. We should still have every player that’s in a confirmed lineup, but if there’s anyone missing, you’ll be able to add whomever you want.

Thanks again for the feedback and let us know if you have any other questions!

Edit – as I was writing this post, the LineupBuilder importing process has been finished and deployed. If you still aren’t seeing THE BAT projections on LineupBuilder, try loading RotoGrinders projections and then reloading THE BAT.

I tried Lineup builder using Yahoo. It only has one pitcher slot. Yahoo is a 2 pitcher site
