ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

Why aren’t any players from STL/PIT listed today?

While there are no guarantees when it comes to predicting the future, the sound methodology, process, and analytical rigor behind THE BAT (and its track record) stand on their own.

    What is its track record??

Even stranger, if I load BAT into the Lineup Builder, STL/PIT players show up there even though they don’t show up in the BAT pages. Are they in BAT but just not showing up, or is Lineup Builder using the RG projections for those players instead of BAT?

    Hey guys,
Really sorry for the issues this morning. It’s the first day of the season on a new platform and there were some kinks to work out. I appreciate you bearing with us. Projections have been fixed and updated as of about 30 minutes ago, which I realize is cutting it very close to lineup lock. There was an issue related to our lineups feed that was throwing things off, but after today we should have these issues smoothed out.

As far as the questions on how often the projections update, they are set to run on a loop to update every 5 minutes with the most recent information. Earlier today excluded, when a new lineup comes out it should be just a few minutes before it’s reflected in the projections. And if you go to THE BAT pages now, you’ll see check marks next to each of the early game pitchers and hitters, which is the indication that the official lineups are being used for that team (for hitters) and for the opposing team (for pitchers). In terms of how often weather is updated, right now it’s set to pull the most recent forecasts a few times per day, including 10-15 minutes before the start of the afternoon and night slates. In terms of umpires, right now there’s no mechanism in place to replace an umpire if he happens to get sick, since this information is tricky to come by. If you ever happen to notice this, though, it’s very easy for me to adjust the umpire manually, which I will do whenever I notice something like this or it’s brought to my attention.

If you guys have any other questions let me know, and I apologize again for the issues this morning and thank you for bearing with us.

Will tomorrow’s projections be up soon?

Yes the plan was to have them up shortly after lineup lock today, but we’re still finalizing some fixes for the lineup issues we had this morning. Once we get those completely resolved, I’ll flip the projections for tomorrow. Should be up at some point today.

    DerekCarty,

Let’s assume that The Bat really does work wonders and helps people put together amazing lineups. You do realize that something like this hurts the industry badly because it removes alot of edge….what’s the end goal here? To make everyone good at MLB DFS and for everyone to be a winner? Because life doesn’t work that way.

New to the MLB scene, what is the average good lineup or how many points is considered a good money lineup usually?

pretty sure its a simple answer he has a product he wants to sell and make money off it. To me just blindly using a projection someone else makes its just pure laziness and a losing strategy. Baseball is really a sport that projections really don’t help much. you can look at vegas and basically say this team will be highly projected etc etc.

Been debating buying this and just re-read the info on it. Does this not include pitch type for matchups? I was sure i had read that earlier

In one post Ryazan tells us using a projection model will never, ever, ever work. In his next post he admonishes the creator for making everyone a pro.

I’m confused, which is it you are really worried about?

It’s ruining DFS by letting people who don’t truly believe in themselves succeed

Pitch types how? Like hitters who are good against fastballs against pitchers who throw a lot of fastballs, type stuff?

Yes exactly that. As well as vs pitchers with certain type of movement on said pitch types and at different pitch velocities.

Hey Guys, a few posts were deleted, as this was spiraling off topic into industry talk. Please keep all posts in this thread focused on THE BAT.

For those of us in states that may outlaw DFS anyday – Michigan – would like to see a monthly payment plan. Currently, using another optimizer but this looks really great. Like the other poster, truly amazed at the criticism of some posters for an optional item. This database as do many others takes hundreds of hours, so congrats to the creator of the BATS.

As far as does this ruin DFSLOL – please…too much variance for that. Just like does poker books and help sites ruin poker sites. Maybe so, but people will always play.

It was mentioned a bit earlier in the thread. If for whatever reason DFS were to be disallowed in your state, a pro-rated refund can be done.

  • RabidKeith

First I just want to say how impressed I am with RG staff and DerekCarty in listening and responding to all the feedback here.

I’m leaning now towards keeping my subscription.

One more piece of feedback: It would be really great if The Bat projections page could incorporate salaries and $/P. Yes, that’s on lineup builder site, but the day doesn’t turn over in enough time to help preparation the night before.
