ESPN, RotoGrinders - Creator of The BAT, MLB Scout School Grad, LABR Champ

I couldn’t be happier to announce that my DFS MLB projection system, THE BAT, is launching today here at RotoGrinders! If you’ve used THE BAT over the past couple years, there’s probably not much more that I need to tell you; you know how much it can help your DFS game. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’d like to think you’ll be happy you have now.

    What is THE BAT?

I’ve developed THE BAT over the past six years and close to ten thousand hours, using skills and methods I’ve developed from my time in the sabermetric community working with some of the best baseball minds in the world, many of whom are now making decisions for Major League clubs. Skills and methods that help set THE BAT apart from your run-of-the-mill Vegas or wOBA model. Vegas and wOBA are shortcuts, plain and simple, and any model that relies on them will give you results and lineups that are shortcuts and, therefore, suboptimal. THE BAT goes well beyond that, incorporating everything wOBA or Vegas can tell you but in a more complex way and with plenty of layers and features on top. And it works with RotoGrinders’ Lineup Builder, helping you build your ideal lineups for both cash games and GPPs.

    What Goes Into THE BAT?

While I was developing my system, the code name I used for it was BATMAN, named after a certain caped crusader who 1) Is awesome, like I intended my system to be, and 2) Uses all sorts of gadgets to get the job done, which is the perfect analogy for my system. As far as I can tell, THE BAT takes into account more factors and has more features than any other system out there. You can get more details here, but to list a few, every single day THE BAT considers:

    • Opposing Hitter/Pitcher
    • Ballpark
    • Weather
    • Umpire
    • Catcher Throwing, Intimidation, and Framing
    • Bullpen
    • League
    • Home Field Advantage
    • Platoon Splits (Hitter/Pitcher/Park/Umpire/Catcher)
    • Role
    • Lineup Position
    • Quality of Surrounding Lineup
    • And more, explained further in THE BAT FAQ

And THE BAT doesn’t just take what a player has done at face value. There’s a big difference between past performance and expected performance, and that’s why each one of these factors has its own underlying projection system so that THE BAT can have the best estimate of how well everyone and everything should perform going forward.

    What’s New for 2016?

For those who’ve used THE BAT before, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am for some of the features that are new for 2016. While plenty of smaller upgrades have been made, the two biggest ones are the inclusion of weather data (temperature, wind, humidity, and several others that impact on-field performance) and minor league data.

So when this year’s version of Carlos Correa gets called up, THE BAT will already have an exact projection for how good he is based on his entire professional career. Along with minor league data is Asian player data. With a record number of Asian imports this winter, DFS players will quickly realize they need to know their Byung Ho Parks (potential cleanup hitter for Minnesota) from their Kenta Maedas (Dodgers number-two starter). While other systems wait for these guys to accrue MLB stats or make a conservative initial guess, THE BAT is already taking into account their body of work Japan and Korea and translating it to the context of Major League Baseball.

    Wrigley Wind: No More Guesswork

One of the most exciting parts of my new weather formulas is eliminating the guesswork on days when there is wind blowing in Wrigley. We all know wind can make a difference, especially in Wrigley, but how much of a difference? Instead of guessing how many guys to try and squeeze into your lineup, THE BAT will weigh the exact importance of the wind in conjunction with every other factor for the game and help you make the best decision possible.

    Why RotoGrinders?

I debated taking THE BAT off the market this year to just use for my own play, but when it came down to it, I just love the DFS community. I love helping and teaching. That was why I started doing this in the first place, and that was one of the driving factors behind my decision to join RotoGrinders. This site and these forums are a community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping you all at DFS through my articles, expert chats, radio spots, GrindersLive appearances, and by making my projection system available.

How Do I Buy THE BAT?

Simply head over to this page and follow the instructions, to purchase THE BAT! – If you have any questions, please post them here, or feel free to email TheBAT@RotoGrinders.com at anytime. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about myself, THE BAT, or DFS in general.

I wish you the best of luck this season! Just four days until Opening Day!

    Updates/Notes/FAQ (Last updated April 5th)

    - Feedback has been received on monthly subscriptions & trials. RG & I are talking over solutions, but in the mean time keep in mind that refunds are possible if you are unsatisfied. Please remember that this is a new product offering to RotoGrinders, and the Tech Team can’t immediately add a monthly or trial at the moment. We’ll continue to discuss solutions long-term, but the refund options is available for those interested in demoing THE BAT.

    - IMPORTANT NOTE: – Please keep all posts on-topic with questions related to THE BAT. Any posts about the industry as a whole, or not on-topic, will be removed. Thanks, The RG Mod Team

If for whatever reason DFS were to be disallowed in your state, we can do pro-rated refunds via our current system, for a situation like this.

Hi RabidKeith, earlier in the thread, RG site founder Cameron clarified that there would be prorated refunds for those that end up on the wrong side of home-state legislation.

First I just want to say how impressed I am with RG staff and DerekCarty in listening and responding to all the feedback here.

I’m leaning now towards keeping my subscription.

One more piece of feedback: It would be really great if The Bat projections page could incorporate salaries and $/P. Yes, that’s on lineup builder site, but the day doesn’t turn over in enough time to help preparation the night before.

    Hey Keith,

We hope to have this column, and maybe others, coming soon (can’t quote timeline yet, but it’s coming)! Thanks for the feedback. Let us know if you need anything else.

Sorry, we ran into a couple opening day hurdles. They should be up by 11:30 PM central, 12:30 AM Eastern (estimate)

To answer your question yes I used it and the system did pretty well for the day.

With that said I think it is pretty important to understand the variance in baseball is going to lead to mixed results in short spans. It would be a huge mistake to take a single days results good or bad and make a judgement. Having used it in the past The Bat is a system that over the span of the season is going to routinely point you in the right direction and is the great compliment to the research you are already doing. Hope that helps.

Intriguing product, very cool. I don’t think I play enough to make it worth it to me but I might consider.. $150 for the whole season really isn’t bad.

  • thenatural91

Can’t justify it in Texas. Maybe like 30 bucks a month I’d bite for that…Not sure we will have dfs all summer..fing A.G.

Don’t see a projection for Gutierrez today.

    1) If I am understanding this correct, everyone thinks they will win if they use projection models – everyone can’t win, that’s not the way it works, so that’s reason 1 that any and all models won’t work. Because if everyone is using the same models, then everyone will just cancel each other out.

    2) If anyone thinks that ANY model can predict what an MLB player will do day in/day out, then you’re in for a rude awakening. That is not how to win in MLB dfs, but by all means, purchase your models and paralyze yourselves with over-analysis. I remember those days too.

You could also use this line of thinking to your advantage by “knowing who everyone is using”, you can pivot off to a guy you are really high on.

Honestly, you are better off creating your own model and using the $150 as starter money. The moment you copy someone elses work, you already lost.

Although this type of tool might be helpful in cash games.

It just totally ruins the fun of the game when you finally hit it big and you see your exact lineup is shared with hundred others.

He’s in there, projected at 8.12 points on FD as of 1:30. If you use the RG lineup builder with BAT projections you can sort by position, makes it much easier.

  • brixnivy23

That’s more than most leagues cost. C’mon man

  • bama2448

Still debating on if I should purchase it or not seeing as it is so high. Would have liked if I could have purchased it on a monthly basis.

I am with leaning with Jonathan Bale’s Philosphy here in regards to DFS. Assuming TheBAT is indeed helpful and is +EV, it only serves as spending money to get fish handed to you. By no means are you learning to become a fisherman and becoming profitable over the long term.

Also, I can see it being justifiable as a supplement for research for someone playing over $100 a day in volume. but anything less than day. Don’t bother.

  • ColonialRampage

There are a lot of features (salaries, $/pt, positions, etc.) that have been talked about with this system, but aren’t there yet. Without them, I’m not sure I see the value. Can we please get these added right away, or at least a firm timeline on when they will be there?

Yes the plan was to have them up shortly after lineup lock today, but we’re still finalizing some fixes for the lineup issues we had this morning. Once we get those completely resolved, I’ll flip the projections for tomorrow. Should be up at some point today.

Going forward, when do you anticipate the projections rolling over to the next day? Hopefully shortly after lineup lock the prior night?

But wouldn’t it be better to keep it in the package we are paying $300 a year for? At least on a monthly basis to try it out? That’s what Maxdalury did with his RotoQL, try it for a month then pay. Just my opinion.

Pretty much every other optimizer/projections site offers some sort of trial.

I really don’t understand why RG/Derek are so hesitant to offer a trial. Really what does say a 7 day trial hurt? If anything that will make more people buy it IMO.

  • Bellz17

I’ll be honest, I have not ever really had good luck in DFS with but want to turn it around somehow…but I’m not rich so this would be a big investment for me.

My goal isn’t to always win, but I’d like a chance at a +ROI.

    Is the tool worth it?

  • PrenticeGT

The video tutorial is basically just the RG Lineup Optimizer with different projections. I admit you did a great job of nailing the top 2 pitchers on a 3 game slate (not tough to do). To me, it seems like you are advertising a $150 spreadsheet.

IMO, the RG lineup optimizer is awesome if you know how to use it.

  • yuda

The value of this purchase is the ability of your algorithm to predict player outcomes. What assessments have you conducted on the model’s ability to predict fantasy performance? Even something as simple as linear regressions comparing this model with a value based model using last year’s data from one or two sites would be helpful.

Right now, you’re relying on users to blindly trust the strength of your model.
