I may have this wrong, but I’ve always thought the approach is the shot that is “supposed” to be on the green – i.e. – your 3rd shot on a par 5, 2nd shot on a par 4. Which means that GIR% is virtually the same as Approach, except that it’s Strokes Gained Approaching, so it’s being compared against how well others are doing on those same holes.

Also, I don’t think fairways hit (DA) counts par 3s, so your possible holes would be less than 72

Approach shot to 14’ on the fringe counts as 0 GIR, where it will not be negative SG approach on average.

Just starting to look at pricing on DK…

Sooooooo many good golfers at 7400 and under.

You can really build whatever lineup you want if you find the right cheap guy.

So far, really like Charley Hoffman (7k), Keith Mitchell (7.2k) and Gary Woodland (6.9k).

If you told me I could have Fowler, Spieth, and Matsu on the same team and bring it in under 50K ? Ownership should be spread out thin this week…

Yea, that’s true, but I guess I meant that a high GIR% should correlate to a high SG:App. Or, maybe I just don’t get it. I guess proximity is actually the more correlated.

I even just read the PGA’s explanation of Strokes Gained, and still don’t completely understand it, expect that they all total up to your strokes gained on the entire hole.

High GIR should correlate with at least a positive SG Approach. I think proximity to the hole would have a much stronger correlation to SG APP, though I have never actually checked either

BIF, I know your playing golf all week, but enjoying heck out of NCAA matches. Looking forward to semis this afternoon.Ghin forTexas looks like he needs to make long putt on 18 or Texas surprisingly will be gone.

    He missed.

I have it PVR’d but was following a bit at the office – heading to golf course now so will likely be up until 1am catching up.

Regarding Texas, I’m not a Horns fan but thought that Ghim and Scheffler would win against almost anyone giving the team a great chance to win one of the other 3 and advance but I guess not.

Yea, I actually just edited my post right before you posted to say that Proximity is probably more correlated. It sounds like all of the SGs are based on a combination of distance from pin, location (rough or fairway), and then how well you finish the hole.

All I care is that someone has determined it means you’re GOOD at that particular aspect of the game, so I’ll go with that

lol my book had DJ T10 for 14/1 to open. Wish they hadn’t caught that mistake

So this means you got sweaty palms and need to have chalk? The question we all want to know is what brand of chalk we should buy.

So it looks like weather is going to be shit both days. Don’t think there’s any kind of advantage..

I think there is less danger of chalk this week than others. Usually the stronger the field, the more spread out ownership gets unless there is 1 or 2 guys who are seriously mispriced and I don’t think that has happened this week, so there are lots of guys up top to choose from and a wide selection of value plays in the 7Ks as well

  • flip4flop

now time to add in who can play in rain and wind the best to see where the bad weather chalk lies. Rory moves up quite a bit for me.

    Tiger woods?

  • BrianVT

Rory is a fade for me, due to Proximity, GIR, SGP, and the fact that he blew another Sunday for the win and then flies here to start over again. Mentality fade

Woods stays up top as well. He was in my top 10 already. Rory was outside my top 25 but as much as I don’t want to play him. I think if the weather is really bad he could outperform those above him at a lower ownership. Really depends on the forecast tomorrow.

The flight does worry me the moss though and initially had him out for that reason.

  • dangasin

How about poor weather performance by spieth at the open last year?

    Anyone like Stenson this week?

Very much so, 60% for me.

  • flip4flop

John Huh is growing on me for a punt, decent course history, SG Approach and Putting are pretty solid and has some history with windy weather doing better than some of the field. At 6800 think he is a steal

J Holiday, may I suggest you add a tab to your google sheet with explanation/examples on how you use your sheet so everyone will have a full understanding?

Would love to know pointers on how to best utilize this spreadsheet as well.
