With the baseball season finally over, and NBA not ramping up for a few weeks, I have to admit I took the dive and tried out hockey. Many of the devoted fans here at RotoGridners have been pushing this sport hard for so long. Like many of you, I haven’t watched a game in years. I think the last hockey game I watched was back in the mid 90s. So far I am really enjoying DFS hockey. I have absolutely no biases. When I pick a team I feel very free. No one has J-e-f-f-G-r-e-e-n screwed me over yet, and I don’t hate anyone, so I can pick any player. I feel very free using the advice from Grinders Live, NHL Daily Plays, Line combinations, and casual advice on here. I have really enjoyed hockey so far. It looks like I’m going to win 2 tickets into the Light the Lamp on DK next tuesday so I guess I will stick with this for a bit longer. Has anyone else tried out Hockey for the first time this year? How are you liking it?

Nice post Seth. Nice to see a former NHL basher giving it some love. Hopefully others see the light

I probably should have mentioned that too. I used to be an NHL basher. Mostly, I didn’t try it because I didn’t know any of the names. I would have been the guy in Grinders chat asking whether I should use Kholishnakov, Kardashian, or Krejci and only one of those is actually a hockey player. Right now feels like the right time to dive into hockey. The prize pools are big and there are enough other newbs that you won’t get killed if you miss a must play (which there don’t seem to be any).

First time playing DFS hockey this season and I’m loving it. I always follow hockey and root for my team, but don’t have the same knowledge of the entire league as I do with other sports.

I’ve been playing on DK, FD, Victiv and so far I prefer DK and Victiv’s scoring over FD. I really don’t like the +/- weighing so heavily, and pts for penalty minutes is just nonsense.

  • sonicattack

Agree 100% on the +/- weighting being too heavy.

  • rmthawk64

    I’ve already retired.

Don’t try talking me into playing it again, either!

It’s a dumb sport and I hate it and I’m mad.

  • theman90210

It’s actually fun when you are a casual hockey fan with no kind of bias.

Hockey IMO is the best sport. To go to a game and see it live there’s nothing that u can compare it to. And if you go to a playoff game it’s sports at its best. Being an islander fan I don’t have much experience with the playoffs.. But I did go to game 6 vs Toronto in 2001 the game after tucker cheap shotted Peca and it was the best sporting event I ever went to. I’ve been to game 5 of the World Series on 2000 when the yanks beat the mets.. I was at that Monday night jet game where they came back to beat the dolphins, and that playoff game still by far was the most excited I’ve been at a game. When Cairns , the islander tough guy defenseman beat up Corson, who also cheap shotted Kenny jonnson the prior game the crowd was electric… Louder than any goal I’ve ever heard scored.. Don’t believe me here’s a clip http://youtu.be/Q9Awi-Yt1mA

From a stress point of view I’m starting to feel like hockey is the best DFS sport. Hockey players are tough so you don’t really see late scratches. The lines are basically set ahead of time so there is no last minute scramble waiting for info. Even if you do miss on a player you can still cash. So far it hasn’t been uncommon to see people in the top 20% with a 0 or poor score from one of their players. The only part I’m struggling with is the +/- but that seems like a very contentious issue even amongst the diehards around here. As long as the pricing stays easy enough for me to field a competitive team I will keep playing DFS hockey.

victiv does not observe +/- seth.

Long time hockey fan (former season ticket holder to the Stars prior to me moving to Houston this summer), but first time playing any type of fantasy hockey. Playing on FD and the +/- and penalty minutes threw me for a loop to start with, but I’m just rolling with it now. Got my first 2 wins last night in a 50/50 and a GPP.

What I can say in my very limited exposure, is that stacking lines and going boom/bust is the most common strategy, and most common among LU’s in the money. Last night I stacked CLB’s top line, and with 1 PP goal, I got a combined 8.9 PTS with the 3 guys involved. Combine that with the same result from another line and a solid (safe) goalie choice and I was in the money no problem.

The taste of winning only increased my need to play again tonight.

I’ve noticed the amount of fun I’m having playing NHL is directly coorelated with how well Patrick Hornivist plays.

Wish all you want, that is exactly what happens every year. GPPs will shrink substantially in November.

And once this happans it gets a lot tougher to win

  • donkshow

Glad to see many new faces playing NHL. Even though I assume GPP’s will shrink once NBA starts and even moreso when NFL finishes, hopefully some will stick around. It’s been a lot of fun seeing NHL GPP’s have top prizes that are more than $400.

Agreed. Now I just need to win one of them ;)

I’m going to stick around after the NBA hits; will be interesting to figure out the weight of what I can do on a nightly basis, however.

The NHL has been much more positive to me than football.

I wasn’t around for the beginning of last season but was there as much volume as there is right now? I’m seeing the contest fill pretty quickly. I logged in yesterday on fanduel around 9:00am CST and nearly all the low dollar GPPs were filled with 5 hours till lock. Cash games seem to be filling up easily. I never saw anything like this all of last season.

Build bankroll in NHL and PGA, flush it NFL Sundays. Rinse, repeat. At least in October.

It was not this good at the start of last season. I’m most curious to see how things go once NBA starts, and then again when NFL ends.

Can’t wait for the season to start. I’ve only played hockey at DK in the past with mixed results; however, while I like their scoring system, I’m not too fond of DK itself. Don’t like penalty minutes at all. Kind of a dinosaur relic and no need for it. +/- not crazy about either, but can use it to my advantage I think. Will be staying away from FD and maybe DK as well this year. Planning to play at Fantasy Aces for sure. Wish what used to be Victiv had their act together. Maybe they will eventually.

Can anybody give me some feedback on FA for hockey. Goal is to stay even maybe turn a small profit with cash games. Know the game well as I played sem-pro goalie for several years a very long time ago..

  • donkshow

DK doesn’t have PIM or +/-.

FA for hockey has great potential in my opinion. I started playing in March of last year. I understand they only had one GPP of $27.50 last year and the rest were lower value GPPS. I wonder if they will increase Canadian users due to Victiv kicking off Canadians. This development in itself would increase NHL players at FA. Increase the active players and GPP sizes should increase. I am not sure about their cash games as I am not sure I played any.
