I got Yair Rodriguez… BJ Penn’s one advantage at this point in his career is his top notch BJJ, but against a wrestler the quality of Rodriguez, I don’t think his bottom game counts for too much here!! We’ve got 3 heavyweight fights on the card and all of them have super big finishing potential.. I’m probably going to have a piece of all 3 on my entries…Marcin Held is in another bad matchup in that he’s facing a grappler who can nullify his BJJ and probably is much better as a striker!!! Interesting card overall.. What are u guys’ thoughts!! There are going to be plenty of unique lineups here!!

I don’t like him as he seems like a snob prick, but Bryan Caraway probably doesn’t seem to get the credit he deserves for being a serviceable UFC fighter.
Saunders/McGee my favorite fight on the card. Lots of action.

I don’t think Yair is very good, he’s flashy but there’s pretty clear holes in his game. At some point I think his hype train comes crashing down, this probably isn’t the spot tho.

Key to victory this week will probably dissecting the 4 HW/LHW fights correctly.

This card looks better than 208, and I don’t know half of the people fighting.

“If I fight Vera, it makes me look like a bully and I teach my kids not to be a bully. Plus, he’s got a daughter that he’s trying to make money to get her surgery done. I got a heart man, I can’t stand there and stop that.” -Jimmie Rivera on his withdrawal from this weekends card. He prefers to face Dodson in an upcoming card

So now that salaries are released, you have Yair at the top followed by a fighter making his UFC debut, who look so-so on film crushing cans and comes from a good camp & a fighter coming off of neck surgery. Did I tell anyone how much this card blows?

  • JGold81

I agree, this card bores me, but I’ll play it anyways. I’m waiting to see any last minute dropouts post weigh ins

As terribly awful as this card is, they’ve decided to run with it!

I’ll say this… Haven’t done this much research on a card in a while. I usually know 90% of the card like the back of my hand. A lot of Googling for FN 103.

A couple observations/plays (going single bullet in a few events only, as I’m literally throwing darts).

Dmitri Smoliakov absolutely dwarfed his opponent at yesterday’s weigh-in. I hate playing the first fight of a card, but this looks like the makings of a classic schoolyard beatdown.

Joe Lauzon looked like he was on cocaine yesterday. He’s super pumped. This fight with Held has all the makings of a grind on the mat, but I have a sneaky suspicion Joe is going to look for the early knockout.

Yair v Penn – An obvious heavy favorite for a reason, it’s easy to like Yair Rodriguez for a 1st Rd finish in this fight, yet there’s doubt, imo, that he pulls it off early. Penn fans can smell a famous BJ counter on one of Yair’s circus shots possibly ending the night dramatically for the legend. I’m still iffy about playing this one a few hours from lock.

Bojan Mihajlovic is my punt for this card. He’s coming off a knockout loss to Ngannou (the freak) so ownership will be down on him, imo, even as players weigh the limited punts on this card. Bojan has a ceiling of a quick 1st Rd finish, looks very confident and his opponent, the favorite, appears ripe for the taking, imo.

As a guy who is more of a game theory MMA player than a fighting-knowledge player, this lauzon / held fight is intriguing. The people with more fight knowledge than me all suggest held will have trouble here, and their reasoning seems sound, but vegas disagrees. Could be an optimal spot to gain some ownership leverage on a good value. Tough call, still not sure what I’m going to do.

  • thetitanlb

I actually like Held here. Lauzon is just a bonus hunter I feel like at this point. My gut before looking at the line was that held is gonna catch him with something. Held was really good before he came into the UFC. I think he just had a bad performance against Diego and Mexico City gassed him.

I though held was gonna be like +170 or something but with the line being almost even I think vegas is saying he has a good shot.

The line on Held is good but I don’t think he finishes, and I don’t think he lands many takedowns. If he wins it’s a close 29-28 type decision so I don’t think I want to risk much on it.

Am I crazy to pick Alex White as a GPP punt? With Martin coming off surgery and getting tired easy?

  • eric42

    Nice mount defense, Dmitri.
