Representative Chris Hurst just proposed a bill into the state legislature which would make playing all forms of fantasy sports which involve “valuable consideration” (aka, money) a felony. I don’t live in Washington, but if you do, please add your comments to this page:

    http://app.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=2370&year=2015

I have no idea if anyone from the state actually reads those comments, so also write and/or call your district representative.

Be sure to read the text of that bill, as it’s almost laughable if it weren’t so serious. He actually references John Oliver as a source… Hopefully this gets shot down or heavily amended while under consideration, but it’s up to the residents of Washington state to speak up and let your congressional leaders know your thoughts.

Pennsylvania will certainly have another take no prisoners all encompassing iGaming ban proposal in the next month guaranteed. Sponsor will be Rep Tom Murt, a Republican with strong support from Amish Country legislators. It will be sent to the filing cabinet for the 5th or 6th year in a row like this one is.

I only briefly scanned over the bill, but it’s interesting to see that Representative Hurst thinks “Unlawful Advertising of Fantasy Sports Game” should be on the same “Seriousness Level” as other Washington state felonies like:

    “Arson 2”
“Bribing a Witness/Bribe Received by Witness”
    “Identity Theft 1”
“Indecent Exposure to Person Under Age Fourteen (subsequent sex offense)”
    “Threats to Bomb”

Good luck to those of you in Washington.

Looks like plenty of casino and tribal connections in his campaign contributions. Go figure.

    Follow the money

Making this a class C felony puts it in the same category as the following crimes:

    • Assault 3 (of a Peace Officer with a Projectile Stun Gun) (RCW 9A.36.031(1)(h))
    • Possession of Depictions of a Minor Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct 2 (RCW 9.68A.070(2))
    • Residential Burglary (RCW 9A.52.025)
    • Robbery 2 (RCW 9A.56.210)
    • Threats to Bomb (RCW 9.61.160)
    • Vehicular Assault, by being under the influence of intoxicating liquor or any drug, or by the operation or driving of a vehicle in a reckless manner (RCW 46.61.522)

Maximum sentence would be 5 years imprisonment and up to $10,000 in fines.

Why does that need to be noted? I think most people realize there are politicians on the left and the right that are against gambling and/or DFS. It just so happens this clown Chris Hurst is a Democrat. I would hope DFS players that are intelligent people wouldn’t let party affiliation dissuade them from contacting their representatives regarding this matter……..

I threw the party affiliation in there as a bonus. Let’s people know it’s not a certain party that’s against fantasy sports.

    Calm your titties. ๐Ÿ˜€

Pro and Con is on both sides dude. The Pennsylvania Take no prisoners blanket ban was sponsored by an R and had 5 other R cosponsors to 1 D. When Ed Rendell (D) tried to get gambling in PA 13 years ago, it was Bible Beater Rs who gave him the most shit. New York Rs maybe of the more libertarian variety. PA and points south and west, not so much.

We have to write our pols REGARDLESS of party. And remember Jon Kyl who back in the 1990s would have made ANY internet gambling a Federal offense. VERY conservative Republican.

Crazy that anyone would think DFS could be classified similarly to child pornography. Then again, why aren’t the news outlets showing who is funding this dolt?

Politicians on both sides want to make the news. Make stupid laws, protect the little children laws, you will get on camera.

Our politicians on both sides of the aisle suck. It’s the system that is broken with all the money that corrupts it.

Getting new guys in doesn’t change a thing. The systems changes them.

Introducing a bill like this should get you tossed out of congress immediately. It has zero chance of passing, is a massive waste of congressional time, and shows a lack of interest in real issues facing America.

Months ago groundwork was being laid in WA for a legalized, regulatory approach to DFS with DK/FD hiring the state’s former AG (a Republican FWIW) to testify/lobby on their behalf.

Unfortunately the sponsor of this bill is also the chairman of the The House Commerce & Gaming Committee where any DFS legislation would need to pass through. So although this bill is going nowhere, it also sends the message that he intends to use his Chair to kill any pro-DFS legislation.

It might make sense to go the initiative route. It would cost around $500k-$1mm to put an initiative on the ballot. Sites could then tailor legislation to their liking and if passed it would provide a blueprint going forward. Of course they risk facing high powered opposition from tribal gaming who could launch an expensive counter-campaign so there is risk involved.

Marijuana legalization would have never passed the legislature but was legalized by voter initiative in 2012.
