Do y’all try and glean anything from team outings at Zurich

pretty much toss it, because no stats and nobody(stat providers like espn even google sheets) has a way to input any type of results into normal results.

With that said, I watched a bunch of the Zurich or listened to it and followed some of the players, Some teams were 1 sided. Brooks carried his brother, Poulter carried Horsfield, I think Finau and KSDT both majorly screwed up. I take those impressions with me. I might use the Zurich as a tie breaker but first will look at CH. Course History is kind of a challenge, although this tourney has been played for a long time 2014 they changed the greens to Bermuda. 2017 was the PGA Championship and course was altered to be more difficult. after 2017 3 holes were left altered and longer. So, not sure how much CH will be a telling thing.

Aha! Yeah. I remember that one, but don’t have a link or know if it still exists.

A couple other pieces of information I’ve always wanted to see:

    - the historical strokes gained (in all SG categories) at this course/tournament only. I almost thought that’s what the orange fields were in the doc you posted, but it wasn’t. You could then compare that to their course history and make some better correlations and find “types” of golfers who excel here

    - historical strokes gained stats for the time just before they played at this tournament (however many rounds you like) to see how well they were playing then vs. how well they played in this tournament then.

Looking at someone’s current SG for like the last 16 rounds or whatever for this year doesn’t really tell me how well they’re going to play at this course this week.

Probably have to pay for this or program a scraper

I see Chip McDaniel Monday qualified again.. won by 3 strokes.. Though this isn’t Puntacana so I wouldn’t expect the same results as that.

I’ve paid for two different places in the past, neither of which provided this type of historical data. It seems like the best I’d be able to do is start collecting it live now for use in the future, but who has the patience for that!?

  • timusbr

I am thinking this same thing. As a collector of data, it takes effort to make sure you do weekly chores.
as a spreadsheet user, The way I format data suits me and the information I want to be visable. No other service paid or unpaid shows you what you want to look at the way you want to look at it. You always have to adjust to whoever you get data from.
as a gambler on sports, I always am thinking of historical data I would like to capture. My thoughts are just to complicated to actually get done. I want to use shots gained data, but it is not easy to capture, I would love to set up lead in performance, like the second suggestion. There is just to much to do that cant be done, yet…some people have the resources, technology, knowledge, and money to do what cant be done by average Joe or even way above average Joe. Thank god for the variance of golf to level the DFS field.

LOL small complaining as I am working on incorporating the Zurich into my year long PGA database. Missing even the most basic info like $$ earned and Fedex pts.

You can use https://datagolf.ca/player-projections to go back to 2014 for True Shots Gained and Raw Shots Gained (Explained on webpage at bottom) by player. You can use this to check a run of form leading up to a result like you were talking about a while back.

The touts TOUTING a few of my guys I had circled early on is not super fun. Maybe I should be said TOUT

Annoying, you would think someone being paid would provide a better service. http://mediaguide.pgatourhq.com/ has all this historic stats by event. It’s a bit of work to tease them out either manually or programatically, but they are there.

  • dangasin

How much $$$ do those stat services charge?

man, one week without left a hole burning through my heart

Speak for yourself, you who did not roster Andrew Dodt in the Duel for the Dagger

  • hsfgsteele

Not that it matters as i’ll just have a single bullet but how chalky will Paul Casey be?

  • Supersharpie

    Did Alvaro Ortiz turn pro?

  • manoffewwords

Surely the euro contests posted are not the best? If so a joke, not worth researching 75 Chinese golfers. I thought Volvo was a big tournament on calendar?

  • BrianVT

Thanks, guys. I’ll take a look at those.

    I was thinking the same.

I went to go look at euro events prize money and this is abt $3M US. about the average euro event, not the worst and not part of abt 10 events that pay $7M+. I thought this was one of the bigger ones but NO.

DK has cut the euro down to the bare bones. Last week they had so many Sequals, I thought it was like Rocky. Maybe this is DK’s way to get more value from the people that play it. the 2nd generation contests get a lot of repeats from the first and so on for the 3rd and 4th.

Evaluating the Chinese golfers is easy if you go to the tournament sheets and look at the week of the masters (-3W). Tournament sheets also gives you the Shenzhen international for 3 years which was played on this course. Enough info to grab a needed scrub but…I dont think you want to roster too many of them.

Yes right after The Masters – his plan was to turn pro right after the Latin America Amateur in January but he won it (earning the Augusta invite) and had to stay an amateur to play in The Masters – if you earn an invite through an Amateur qualifying criteria, you must stay an Amateur to play in it.

  • Bastardo

Anyone have the link to the Gayo Experience?

  • BIF

More info and added incentive for Chip McDaniel

Chip McDaniel needs about 10 FedEx pts to assure himself a spot into the Web.com Tour Finals in the Fall but with no playing status the only way is to get those points in PGA Tour events is through Monday Qualifiers so this could be his last opportunity as you never know if you’ll make it through another one. Typically 200+ players compete for the 4 open spots between the pre-qualifier and Monday Qualifier – you usually need 64 or 65 to get in or be in a playoff for a spot.

A 45th place finish or better this week in the Wells Fargo will get him his needed 10 points.

  • MrBreeze

Will be listing some #BeattheForum contests tomorrow night.

A little something for everyone $1/$3/$5/$10

  • eruthruff

Is there really a consensus that incentives matter? I always figured the truth was the exact opposite – that most players (say, 90%) do better when there is less pressure on them. An exception might be if a player is well out of contention on Sunday and might stop trying because they don’t care about T40 vs. T50…but because they need T45 (as in Chip McDaniel’s case) they have the motivation to keep grinding for every lost stroke.

Actually, I wonder how we could test this with golf data. It doesn’t seem easy. You could look at how a player performs when in the top-10 going into Sunday vs. the bottom 10, but that seems hopelessly confounded with things like course fit and form. Or you could look at how players perform as a function of whether the current tournament is worth more or less money than their median tournament.

For Chip’s case, I think the fact that he has won 2 Monday qualifiers is impressive. He T5 at Puntacana and parlay’d that to a just miss MDF at the Valero. So He is either HOT or he is trying for the fast track and getting opportunities. At 6400 he is an acceptable Punt. If he is focused and dialed in, who knows.

Ok PGA that was a fun experiment, can you just make Zurich a stroke/match play event next year? I don’t want a week off

Draftkings 100% could have made contests for this and it would not even have been hard…. The teams just get points togetherand we choose 6 pairs

  • timgodd375

One positive from last week is that I bet on Rahm/Palmer to win at 16-1 for $30 so won some nice chump change
