Seeing as 2016 has been a struggle for me so far with the NBA, which has typically been my best DFS sport, I wanted to try to focus on the positives as I try to get my mind right and get back on track. This got me to thinking about where I’ve had success in the past and thought it’d be cool to hear any stories of success that people want to share.

My most memorable win came during last year’s NBA playoffs, and I remember it vividly. I had thrown some $2 entries into a 2-game slate featuring Bulls vs. Bucks and Warriors vs. Pelicans. Figuring that most people would lean towards the Warriors game, I got the idea to do a 7-player stack from the Bulls/Bucks game to try to separate from the pack. This still allowed me to go with Draymond Green in the other game. The Bulls/Bucks game was competitive throughout and ended up being higher scoring than I expected.

As the game went on and I looked at this lineup and the standings, I remember thinking that if my stack could get to 250 points or above and Draymond can get the 40-50 I was expecting from him, that I should be able to approach or exceed 300 and maybe have a shot at a good sweat that night. My stack finished with around 252 if I remember right, and it was all up to Draymond from there. He had a good first half as I continued to climb up the leaderboard, and I was so close to the top when he went to the bench in the 3rd quarter. Haha, I remember how long it felt before he came back into the game in the 4th as I dropped a little bit in the standings. He came back in the game and picked up where he left off, helping take me to the top of the leaderboard where I tied for first place! All in all, I took home over $400 that night on $24 in entries. It was pretty awesome, and it’s experiences like that that push me to keep grinding even when I’m struggling like I have been for the past 3 months.

Good luck, fellow grinders! Anyone else have any stories they want to share?

My most memorable win was in baseball on opening day this year.

Prior to that, I had gone about 0-5 in nba in 2015, forgot about my account, and then came back to it a few months ago and did some more NBA games. I went about 1-10.

Then I decided to try baseball on opening day and won my first baseball game. So it was surprising and very memorable.

First ever big win was March 9, 2015 – took down 1st in the $5 layup of 10,900 spots for $5k and 8th in the 86,000 shot ($2) for $750. Adriean Payne had basically not played at all the entire season and someone randomly had him on their team that night (he was 0% owned lol) and had he gotten a single positive stat in the last minute of the game it would’ve pushed me out of 1st and down to second. Longest minute of my life. 352.3 won it that night.

The second was in a cross-sport survivor during NFL season 5 days before Christmas. I had Brees/Cooks going into the Monday night game vs the Lions. Everyone was on Cam that week (he went off anyways) but I was trying to take a different approach and attack a different game. Had Brees, Charcandrick, David Johnson, Cooks, Julio, Baldwin, Reed, Gostkowski, Chiefs. Brees had a terrible 1st half and I was so pissed but he came on slinging it the 2nd half (believe it was the game he hurt his foot) and before I knew it I was in position. Brees through a slant on the goaline to Cooks that Slay broke up but had he caught it I would’ve made an extra $3k. Ended up being $6k on the lineup including first in the survivor and I was going crazy. Such a fun night. I actually made an additional $200 on 2 Stafford kneel downs at the end of the game which was pretty cool.

was legit the night where I probably put in my least amount of research ever for NBA — I hastily threw the lineups in 10 min before lock, using the last $8 in my account for four lineups. forgot who said it – but if you know a sport well, then trusting your gut is sometimes the best strategy. maybe I should do that more…

one of the lineups certainly did well. helped a lot with buying an engagement ring.

this was back in the days where 371 on a normal slate could win you a tournament lol. now you’ll get like $50 on most nights with that.

that lineup finished 3 out of over 100,000 WITH CJ Miles getting 11 points LOL.

My biggest single contest wins were earlier this year in January. I was out on a double date with my wife and some friends of hers so I went to the bathroom around 5:45pm and entered 3 bucks into the Dribbler (someone cancelled) and the Shot (another cancelled entry). All my guys did really well and I was sitting on around 285 with Lou Williams and Kanter left to go in the only late game. Both had amazing games and I ended up with 374.1. Got 17th in the Shot for around 1300 and 3rd in the Dribbler for 1200. Pretty good day with only 3 bucks wagered.

NFL Feud of Champions ($100K) Winner

I was searching around for sites to try out 2 years ago and came across Fantasy Feud and wanted to try this season long salary cap leagues thing they had. I made an account tossed $50 on the site entered 2 $22 leagues. I had $6 left on the account figured I would toss a few teams in this random $2 satellite contest. Well I win a ticket to the bigger Q off my $6. Following week low and behold I took that ticket and actually win the Q! Now I figure I should probably look up what this final is all about since I joined for other reason. Come to find out the final is 2 months later Sun/Mon and wouldn’t you know that Monday is my 30th Birthday. Final comes and after Sunday I was sitting 9th with CJ Anderson to go Monday night vs Bengals no one ahead of my has CJ and I need 20 pts to take over first. 4th quarter I had moved up to 5th place I need 3.5 pts to jump into first its super tight up at the top. Its 3rd and long Broncos down 13 like 2 mins and some change left no way they run it I am already accepting the $5,000 5th place all of a sudden I see Payton hands off to CJ he breaks off a 40 yard run Payton tosses a Interception Bengals kneel it out and BOOM best Birthday ever turned a $2 ticket into $35,000!

    ^ That’s awesome skinnyskins.

My most memorable wins aren’t all that memorable. I’ve played about 4,500 lineups and never won a big GPP. Got 2nd/6,000 once (MLB), 9th/85,000 (NBA), a couple wins on the FD ~500 player Happy Hours (both MLB and NBA).

My most memorable was the first big cash I ever had. Put very little research in and knew nothing about NBA. Had just learned about the concept of “multi-entering” and threw 8 lineups into the Shot.

Hadn’t thought about it and went to the bar. Looked at my phone a couple hours later and was winning $100, and the amount won just kept going up! Wound up 9/80,000 in the shot for $500, and never looked back.

I play small buy-ins, and had two instances where I was betting the last $ in my account (once NFL Slam, once NBA Happy Hour), and won $200/$150 respectively which kept me from having to redeposit. Those ones were clutch.

Taking down the rally last year and then last Saturday taking down the squeeze when I thought I had no chance after hamels got pulled but then the Padres decided to bat around in the 8th inning in Colorado. Love MLB dfs!

skinnyskins, that sounds amazing! I’ve got a birthday coming up in less than 2 weeks, and I sure wouldn’t mind something like that for myself! I don’t play much MLB, but I will be playing the NBA playoffs, so we’ll see what happens!

I won a three game slate in a quarter arcade in hockey. it was only 40 dollars but heres why it was so memorable:

    1) I know nothing about hockey (other than spending a few hours reading up on hockey dfs strategy and figuring out what stats i thought might be predictive) and was only playing because it was the NBA all star break.

    2) I was technically in the lead with like 45 seconds left in the game as lundqvist was pitching a shutout versus the fliers so he was about to get the win and then the 2 point bonus for the shutout. The combination of which would have put me to the top spot. Then I see my team slip from like 2nd to 7th after he gives up the goal, losing the shutout and geting points deducted for giving up the goal.

    3) now heres why it pays (granted not much in this case) to be lucky (well even luckier then I was to win tourney in a sport a knew little about)…so at this point im like darn…almost had it if it wasnt for a meaningless goal with 40 seconds left…oh well…Then I look down again….and im in 1st!!! I took a one off player from philly (whose name I forgot…I know terrible) who was the one who scored the goal on lundqvist, putting me back on top!!! Like Frank the Tanks vision of Blue in Old School…it was Glorious!!!!!! well…as glorious as a 40 dollar win can be.

  • bighop04

Like a true moron I can barely remember any of my good wins (I’ve never had a great win of like 5,000), I can just remember my bad beats of when I should have won or the 1 player I swapped that would have won it for me.

I won’t remember a thing if I win 500 bucks on a night, but I can tell you exactly who threw up duds and cost me in my cash games the last 3 months

  • Olhausen

For me it was last night. I took third in the bunt on FD for 630$. I’m still shooting for that big 1k plus night. But 630$ off of an 8$ investment is nothing to sneeze at.

  • drummerjack

I had a little 2 week hot streak in NHL on FD last year. It started on 3/16 when I took 2/17000 in the $2 Breakaway and won about $1,100 and ended on 4/2 when I took 4th in the $200 KOTI tourney and won about $7,500. I had been trying to win a ticket to KOTI for weeks, and finally won it in the last chance the night before the contest. I never expected to take 4th. It was incredible, and I’ve been trying to re-create that little heater for over a year now.

  • whodat2

My most memorable win was also my most memorable loss. $200 entry into the last qualifier for the Live FD football final in 2014. Top 20 won a ticket. 9000 entrants….. I place 27th, 3.7 points out. It did net me 2k though (shrugs).

Tonight. I’m a small stakes player and don’t play much gpp. I won a 100 person league, which isn’t anything to brag about, but I left 3k salary on the table on Fanduel. I’ve never left over 1k salary on the table I think, so to leave 3k on the table and trust my team and see it pay off is pretty cool.

I was watching the Oregon v TCU game with friends + family during bowl games this year. We are all huge Oregon fans, but I had the back-up TCU QB Kohlhausen on my team because he was starting for the suspended Trevone Boykin.

The Ducks got out to a 31-0 lead in the first half, and it was looking like a route. The rest of my team seemed perfect, so I started openly rooting for Kohlhausen because I was worried he would get pulled if he couldn’t get it going. At first people were just giving me the evil eye for rooting for the competition, but by the time TCU came back and sent it to overtime they wanted to kill me. It was the largest comeback in bowl game history. I tried to act sad that my Ducks lost, but it was hard to do with a shit eating grin on my face. I ended up taking down the late-slate GPP and don’t think I’ll be invited back to watch anymore bowl games.

The day after Thanksgiving NBA on FD. It was a Friday which I didn’t normally play due to coaching my daughters b-ball team. However, they didn’t play due to the holiday. I made my lineup the night before and only changed 1 player on Friday – changed Marvin Williams to Jared Sullinger (based on advice from EddieFear).

I had about $150 in cash games and $12 in tourneys (5 entries in $1 Swat, 2 in $2 Shot, 1$ Dribbler, and 2$ Block) that Friday – as lineup lock approached I couldn’t decide on 2 other unique lineups for my Swat entries so I left 3 of them the exact same. So at lineup lock I had 3 unique lineups however all but 2 Swat entries and 1 Shot entry were the exact same lineup (my cash game lineup). After lineup lock I went out with the family. Every hour or so I would check FD. At about 9:30-10pm I noticed I was in the low thousands. That got me checking every 2 minutes or so and my winnings went up every single time maxing out at 17k+ midway through the 3rd quarter of the Clippers-Pelicans game. It was crazy…my wife didn’t believe me and I was ecstatic. With about 45 seconds left in the Clippers game my winnings went from 17k+ to 12k+ due to a Clippers blowout – I had Blake Griffin who sat out the 4th quarter entirely due to a blowout and lost 1st place in the Shot by 1 point due to a late Holiday basket. If Blake plays any of the 4th I would have only needed a rebound from him lol. Anyway, I ended up winning the Swat 3 times over (same lineup 3 entries), the Dribbler, the Block, and I tied for 2nd in the Shot by 1 point for 12k+ in winnings all with my cash lineup. I withdrew the majority of it but left enough in to up my daily play significantly which led me to making about 10k more during this NBA season. A night I’ll never forget – especially now as I’m working on my taxes lol.

  • wolfjb1

I took seventh in last night’s quarter arcade on DK.

I’m damn proud of myself for winning $30 on a quarter entry fee.

Kicking myself for not putting the same lineup into the moonshot, which I played every day this week. Except yesterday.

Yeah, I’m a small fish in this pond, but I love DFS. Especially when I win. It makes me irrationally happy that I also “won” (finished first) in a $2 double up this week.

Friday night i entered a single bullet on FD and took down several of the smaller gpps line drive, rally and mini squeeze. Turned 240 into just over 1600$. I did the responsible thing and withdrew half of the winnings, since my first child is due to be born on july 11th the extra cash will come in handy. Well Saturday night I entered the monster on fd for the first time on a large slate as well as the grand slam , squeeze and sac fly. The night started out great I put together a mini stack of cron, perez and trout agains Bucholz (I think hes garbage and cron has looked great in the last few days and i could save some money vs rostering pujols in that spot, and I used perez bc he was all I could afford at C.) I finished off the team with Pomeranz, Murphy, Espinosa, Solarte, Upton JR and Jankowski. I knew going into the late games I had a great chance at making some real money after cron and perez combined for almost 130 pts. I had 329$ in total entries and played only this single lineup. Going to the bottom of the ninth in the yankees/padres game i was up almost 4000$. I was so excited to be winning this much, my wife couldnt sleep (8.5 mo preggers) so she was sweating the games with me. Being from GA we are both Braves fans and actually have a very strong dislike for Upton. She couldnt believe i played him. To start off the bottom of the ninth Melvin was leading the inning off and the game was tied up. I told my wife, if nothing else melvin can hit a fastball, do you think he can hit a walkoff? She laughed and said hell no, lol. Well first pitch he launches it in the upper deck. My payout goes from about 4000 to over 12000. At this point i knew Pomeranz wasnt getting the win and there were three games left in there final innings. I must have done the calculations a dozen times to see what the guys around me had and who they had and what points they would get with there win. Everything lined up perfect and I took down the Monster by less than a point and finished 3rd in the grandslam. Keep in mind I think this is the only game Murphy has gone 0-5 this year! lol. I ended with 255.4 and had 2 players with 0 points and my pitcher didnt get the win. There never is a bad time for a win but 12k will go a long way right now with a child on the way. I still havent come down from my high, its been a great weekend to say the least.

Last September I was out of work with a back,procedure.. Played a few $3 golf tournaments and did pretty well. I enjoy watching golf although I’ve have never played. I’m 60ish so that qualifies me as being technically challenged. Doing some net research and old fashioned looking at a player and having a hunch, I put together 10 line-ups with my top 10 golfers and played 10 $3 DK tournament games. After the 2nd round I saw I was in a very good spot with all making the cut. Then I noticed I accidentally played one line up twice. Round three all six golfers catch fire and I’m in first place, actually tied for first place with the lineup splitting 150K. Sunday I drop all the way down to 800somthing place because my guy start late. My son and I go to the Eagles home game against Dallas, a 4:15 start I check scores throughout Have 4% left on my cell phone battery and one player 3 points from overtaking my lineup(s). Eagles recover a fumble everyone is high fiving I look at my phone and see I won.. I grab my 34 yr old son hug the crap out of him and scream “I just won 150 thousand fucking dollars!!!” A drunk dude behind me slobbers “you bet on fucking Dallas” and proceeds to fall over and crack his head over…my wife felt bad for us as it had to be the worst Eagles game I ever attended but said to her “this was the worst game on the best day of my life..I’ve won first place a few times in MLB, NBA. that being said the experts give awesome advice on the type of player should do well, but their specific player picks rarely pan out. RotoGrinders has the best info and advice but you ultimately have to pick your lineup and that’s where your “feel” for the game comes in. To me seeing computer generated line-ups win a lot is discouraging because the winners didn’t pick the lineup they just entered it. But when you win a nice chunk of change because you played a catcher who was played by only 0.50% of the field and you knew he was a lock is awesome.
