A few weeks ago there was a post in here that was a little disturbing: someone had just had enough of DFS, and was on the way out the door. The consensus in the comments was about right: every excuse the guy used was untrue, and ultimately, like anything/everything…its not for everyone.

I found myself joining DFS on a whim during the 2014 NFL season around November, when our local “Big Dog” Radio host was talking Fan Duel up like crazy. I entered all the long shot tournaments, thinking for sure I would win the hundreds of thousands of dollars, only to watch 50 $1.00 entries that “can’t lose” turn into three $2.00 cash-outs!

I’ve always been the type to look over my shoulder and see what caused the fire..looking at the No.1 winner, I’d always say “Wow, Why would he pick THAT GUY to have a good day??” By the next football season, it turned into “I KNEW THESE GUYS WERE GOING TO HAVE A GOOD DAY…why did I only ‘Win’ 4.00 dollars on 75.00??

By that point, I felt like that dude that posted his farewell…so when I read his rant, I didn’t agree, but I got his frustration.

The difference between that guy, and me… I saw people winning, I knew I was getting the picks right because I had decades of football experience behind me, but I didn’t know Jack about DFS. And I wasn’t going to learn unless I started to pick peoples brains, read articles, pay for sites, basically, consider the whole thing a BIG GAME, and LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT BY THE RULES.

Every game has rules, and if you look at the big picture, the bottom line is, there are people out there winning this money. Its not Magic, its not VooDoo, its a lot of the same people, over all for the most part, and there is no reason why we can’t join them.

After playing some NBA slates last year before I had my first revelation…I didn’t have a clue what was going on yet. But last MLB season I took my share of lumps but along the way it started to make sense. I started to catch my own mistakes.

I began to see what my problem was, like when I would realize I had GPP lineups playing in Cash games, and Vice Versa. Each sport you play has a different subset of rules and guidelines, but the concept is the same. Suddenly the time in between a good lineup got less and less.

Don’t get me wrong, I made enough mistakes this NBA season, the Sharks out there should refer to me as Charlie, the Starkist Tuna: But they weren’t a waste, and you have to have sources you can go to to pick brains. RotoGrinders has an assortment of characters, most with the right stuff, there are sources all over the internet, learning more about DFS, more about the sport your playing, its infinite right now…

But the bottom line is, the system isnt rigged, its not blind luck all the time, and if DFS is not for you, theres nothing wrong with that…But don’t make that decision up because you haven’t given it your fair shot to put in your dues.

These last few days everyone has been moving over to MLB, I couldnt quite do that yet, I was starting to ‘get it’ the last couple weeks of NBA, I put in more time in the day, waited longer to make my lineups this time of the year, and without as many of the big boys playing in the NBA slates, the “Eye Opening” happened again with two of the better days I’ve had in DFS…allowimg me to see how it works on a smaller scale. The 315 scores went so much farther, even winning cash games sub 300. I got a zero and won a cash game..talk about an easier time of it.

These guys who win consistently, the Saahilsud, Papagates, youdacao, ChipotleAddict, Scout326…they weren’t born with this knowledge, they took their lumps too, and maybe some of them got it easier the first time around than we did…thats ok, because this isnt a race. Its not LeMans or Daytona, its not a timed test, put down your pencils; its the Grind, the Long Grind, and all that matters is you get there in the end!

I was fully expecting to open this thread and see a bunch of whining. Pleasant surprise to see it was completely the opposite.

Sort of sad that this thread will only get a few pages of comments, none by the same group of guys that will carry on a negative industry topic for 12-13 pages.

    BUT, this is the internet.

I’ve read it 3 times and absolutely love the OP’s post.

This is one of the best industry posts I have read! I wish there was more people not just in the DFS industry but in society in general that had this type of perspective.

OK so I’ll jump in here, even though I didn’t want to be the turd in the punchbowl, and I wanted to let you people have your ridiculous, positive thread…

But it’s worth pointing out that there is not a single substantive point made in that entire post. Somehow, you missed this, having read it 3 times.

And, if you look at the second to last paragraph, it really seems like this guy just got high off of a couple of nice nights: “the “Eye Opening” happened again with two of the better days I’ve had in DFS”…

Funny how that works. You have some of your best days, and you think you’ve got it figured out. I’m sure none of us has been there. Of course, if the OP ever wants to share with us what he figured out, beyond the fact that the game has “rules”, and that you shouldn’t put gpp lineups in cash games, I’m all ears.

Honestly, Heterodox. I am sure you are a relatively bright guy, but I just feel sorta sad for you right now. :-(

Why? Cynicism is a gift. It helps you avoid gobbling up any old bullshit just because it sounds like the kind of thing you want to hear.

Not really. But good for you for letting yourself believe it. Don’t get me wrong Hetero, am on your side which is why it makes me sorta sad.

Thanks for dropping into the thread to condescend and make sure we all know you are smarter and more perceptive than the rest of us sheep.

First of all, my friends call me dox, not Hetero, and you don’t know me well enough to use nicknames. You need boundaries.

Second, relax. I thought this thread was hilariously inane when I read it last night, and had no intention of posting in it, until someone put out a call for the cynics, while dangling the bait of “I read it THREE TIMES!”. I can’t not answer that call. If that’s condescending, so be it. I am what I am.

I know you can consistently cash jsut playing cash games but i rather throw darts in GPPs…it like playing the powerball with a lot more control…im probably negative 500 dollars over the last two years of DFS but its actually my #1 form of entertainment at the moment. I would play for free if congress was to ban everyone from using money to play. I just look at as hobby that can be really rewarding if you get pick the right plays on any given night.

    Finally a positive post!

Nothing wrong with your comment Heterodox, and it could have been just that, two lucky days. But in a couple years, Ive had lucky days, you didn’t catch THAT!

What I’m saying, is that instead of looking at the win and saying “Whoa I got lucky” I looked at it and said..“OHHHH now it makes sense”

The end of NBA was very good for me. And I have had some of the biggest wins I’ve had in the last couple weeks.

I don’t play big money, so for me to throw down 20-30 bucks and come out over a 100, thats awesome for me.

The other day of course I had my ..relapse… a complete downer, but it happens.

Thanks to everyone who liked the post..Ill continue to write more in the future.

Also… wanted to point out in case it escaped some… that the main point of this story was also that this DFS takes two halves, you have to know how to DFS, and you have to know your sport. Imagine someone who never watched a sport, but just memorized names facts and figures. Do it long enough, you can fake it.

So back at it tonight, maybe today is the day I earn an avatar!

Really didn’t mean to rain on your parade. It was more the responses that got me going. There is something to be said for keeping a level head when you have a some of your best results, but you probably don’t need me to tell you that. Hope it keeps going well for you.
