I have wondered this for quite some time. On most nights, the first NBA game is scheduled for 7ET. The actual tipoff does not occur until at least 710ET or later. Why do the sites lock games at 7ET instead of 710ET? Is it just because that is the way it has always been, or is there an actual reason? My guess is the games are scheduled for 7ET because that is the scheduled time for the broadcast to start. I have been playing NBA DFS for about 3 years now and I have never seen a game tipoff at the listed start time. Why don’t the sites bump the start time back to 705 or 710? That would allow more time to enter and react to late breaking news. There have been a few times this year where a player scratched at 701 or very close to 7. Justin Hamilton on Wednesday comes to mind as an example. Just curious if anyone knows why the sites don’t list the start time based on the actual tipoff. MLB locks at 705 usually so it is definitly possible. This hasn’t screwed me over personally, Im just wondering. What say you guys?

I’m sure they just reflect what is listed as the official start time of the game. They do all seem to start about 10 minutes after that official time but is it consistent across all games? For instance, do they all start at 7:10 or do some start at 7:09 and others at 7:11. They would open up unwanted issues if they tried to get cute with it.

I did watch a Sunday game recently that seemed to start right at 1:00 or just a minute or so after.

The Sunday national TV games tend to tip-off immediately after the listed times. For the most part, however, I totally agree with Seth. I, too, would like to see DFS sites adjust the lock time to properly reflect tip-off.

A lot depends on what they are doing before each game, i.e. ceremonies, long anthem, promotions, etc.

These tend to change all the time and it feels like the non-Nationally televised games start times are a general guideline…at least it is not like some music acts that don’t go on for an hour or two after the posted ticket times.

The Nationally televised games have to keep on a schedule so the affiliates know when to feather in their various programming, ads, news casts, etc.

The regional sports channels and to a certain extent ESPN, FOXSports1,etc revolve mostly around sports so if things slide a little it is no biggie but if someone misses the start of 60 Minutes or the Good Wife, because of sports…watch out!

It’s a bigger problem because you miss the end of 60 Minutes or the Good Wife, CBS hardly ever starts on time and always shows their Sunday night shows, some have been nearly an hour late starting. DVR nightmare.

The technology exists to set lineup lock for each game (regardless of start time) right at the first tip, NBA.com is near real time, excuses will prevail, its more for them and less for us.

CBS affiliate newscast Director here. College football season on CBS drive me crazy. We’re slated for our news to start at 6pm, if it goes past 6, but before 6:48:24, we have a newscast. If it goes past 6:48:24, CBS will fill the time nationally until prime time at 7 pm. I can’t count the number of times CBS will drop out of coverage 10 seconds before our kill time, meaning we now need to fill a 10 minute condensed newscast.

Sports and the news and local affiliates are the reason national telecasts seem so locked down on times… Because they are locked waaaaay down.

I was betting online for a couple years until I switched over to dfs in 2011/12 and I have wondered the same thing ever since.

It gives the Head Coach time to look at all the DFS lineup’s and scratch a few players. LOL

We actually start at 5 past the hour on Sports Tradex for the reasons stated by OP. Never had any issues.

Basketball is the least sensitive sport if you lock a minute too late as well. One basket won’t mean much, but a lead off homerrun or kickoff return for a TD could swing a GPP in basketball/football.
