    Hey guys,

We just launched QuickMatch yesterday afternoon. QuickMatch will auto-match you to another Yahoo DFS player based on your skill level, into a rake-free and guaranteed H2H contest. If we don’t find you a match, you’ll win automatically.

Check it out and let me know if you have any feedback! Right now only on web, but will be in apps shortly: https://sports.yahoo.com/dailyfantasy/quickmatch/create?pid=rotogrinders&aid=rotogrinders.

How about free contests? Do they factor in? Could someone artificially deflate his/her ranking by putting a bunch of skunks in the free contests, then putting a real (+EV) linuep in paid contests? Doing this wouldn’t cost anything (provided he/she wins the paid contests), but would help keep the player’s average score — and thus probably the QM ranking — generally lower over time. I’m sure you’ve considered this, but I just thought I’d ask.

Free contests do NOT factor in, with the exception of Yahoo Cup contests which have prizes. Abuse/gaming the system was definitely a concern and something we thought about when developing the rating, which is why we don’t include other free contests.

I figured as much. Definitely appreciate the forethought about things like that. I’ve been enjoying it (and the block function) so far.

5/19 my NHL was 92nd, 5/20 86th, 5/21 dropped all the way to 68th, today dropped again to 67th (despite no contests because the NHL season ended several days ago when Vegas won the WCF).

I was diamond all season. Now I’m no longer diamond but it doesn’t help because the NHL DFS season is over. :(

There was a 2-game slate that ended on 5/21 (combining the Vegas win on 5/20 with the Caps game 6 win on 5/21). After each slate ends we update levels. That said, the team generally agrees that some of the rankings have been too volatile; we’ll continue to iterate and refine the algos moving forward.

I don’t think there’s any question it’s too volatile when you look at the examples I gave. In both NBA and NHL I played the entire season and a few bad slates dropped me a long way. In both NBA and NHL I was 99th percentile virtually all season. Sadly, the NHL drop below diamond didn’t occur until no slates remained.

Every step down on the rankings is a step down in the (results-based) quality of your opponent, right? One might view a drop in the rankings as a good thing, at least for the next few slates until your ranking rises again. Am I looking at this the wrong way?

    No, that’s the right way.

If you’ve been losing a lot of money, your rankings drop and your HTHs will be against weaker opponents.

Unfortunately I was diamond all regular season in all sports.

    Daniel,

You going to have any more “main” slates for soccer? they are done since PL and basically have no chance to get a QM against another opponent so they just get cancelled.

  • YoungFischer

I’d play these more often if it required less clicks to enter

can you please explain the block function, i thought that was to prevent someone from sitting your h2hs but that doesn’t seem to be the case

Blocked users are not able to join any public or private Head-to-Head contests you create, and cannot send you Head-to-Head challenge requests. However, your block list will not affect QuickMatch opponent selection.

    =========

QuickMatch merely matches with people on your level so block list does not affect it (goal is for them to fill as many QuickMatches as possible).

Basically, the block list works for raked head to heads but not the rake-free ones.

Daniel, are performance ratings weighted by entry fee at all? Or are all paid contests weighted equally?

All paid contests (and free yahoo cups) are weighted equally.

  • Shadetree42

    Thank you.

I have a feeling the ans. is yes, but just to confirm: entering one lineup in 20 contests counts the same as entering 20 contests with unique lineups, right?

  • Morley

Daniel, a few times I’ve lost track of time and tried to sneak in a quickmatch and sometimes it freezes/pauses a bit and I can’t get it in before lock but have already paid the fees, when there are later games it’s not the end of the world but for short slates and things like soccer and golf this can be disastrous. Twice I’ve fired out a full pairing of Quickmatches in soccer that wouldn’t let me enter a lineup because there was only one late game and you need at least 3 teams to submit a lineup :(

I get that I agree to this possibility when enrolling but why not allow us to choose the lineup before we enter the quickmatch like with all other contests?

Probably for this exact reason haha people try to skim the system some times (myself included).

    Daniel,
I’ve gotten a ton of conflicting info. from Yahoo support, so maybe you can definitively answer all my questions about your rating system one by one (I’m hoping it will help others as well):

    1) Does entering one lineup in 20 contests count the same as entering 20 contests, each with a unique lineup? [“Count the same” means contest outcomes count for the same weight in the rating algo].
    2) Similarly, does entering 20 contests in the same slate count the same as entering one lineup in 20 slates?
    3) Does the quality of competition matter (e.g, is finishing 5th out 20 in a no-vets contest worth the same as doing so in a reg. contest)?
    4) Are 50/50s, H2Hs and QM contests (with prizes) all counted with the same weight?
    5) How do you handle the fact that a average 50/50 player (one who loses long-term) will prob finish consistently close to the money line, whereas an average (losing) GPP player won’t? I.e., are the calcs. (player score diff. from. avg. contest score) the same for evaluating performance for each type of contest?

    Thanks.

  • yisman

^ he said it is based on your average score. That answers most of your questions. Competition and contest type are irrelevant.

Yes, this. It’s simply the average of the difference between your score and the slate average score. If you have multiple lineups it’ll take the average, and no differentiation based on contest type. All paid contests and Yahoo Cups count.

  • Shadetree42

So, if you have the same lineup in 20 contests (same slate), will that count more toward your ranking than if you had only entered the lineup in one contest?
