While I wish the course was playing a tad more difficult, there’s still a thin line between making birdies and making bogeys. I always love TPC Sawgrass because it rewards good shots and penalizes bad ones. Brian Harman put together his second low round in a row on Saturday to get himself in the mix. Despite starting Round 3 with a three-shot lead and shooting 2 under par, Wyndham Clark finds himself a shot back heading into the final round. That’s because Xander Schauffele shot a bogey-free 65. I have a pre-tournament outright bet on Xander, so that’s where my rooting interest lies heading into Sunday.
As noted yesterday, this is the perfect golf course for leaderboard movement. We saw a number of golfers fly up the leaderboard with low rounds on Saturday and quite a few fall way down with bad rounds. Given how ownership concentrates at the top of the board (especially in final round showdown contests), I am more willing than most to target golfers going out early on Sunday. You’ll still need to pick the winner and a couple more that will finish in the top 10, but targeting golfers that aren’t in contention is more viable than most realize. The difference between the finishing position points for 10th and dead last is the same as one birdie. My advice: Be a little different with your player pool.
