David Dahl Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Chalky Or Not, I Want Some

I am really intrigued to see where ownership falls on Monday's slate. Upon first glance I was sure that Rockies would be extremely chalky but I am hearing an awful lot of Twins buzz which makes me think they could soak up some of Colorado's ownership. I would gladly welcome any sort of ownership discount on a Rockies stack as they currently have a monster 7.1 implied run total and should have no problem teeing off on Johnny Cueto and the Giants bullpen. Cueto has unsurprisingly struggled to start the season and is pretty clearly someone we want to target aggressively at this stage of his career.

O/U is sitting at 14 in matchup between SFG and COL in Coors tonight

There are plenty of great options on both teams tonight in Coors as two mediocre pitchers are toeing the slab in the best hitting environment in baseball. The Rockies have the higher total at 7.56 and will be facing Shaun Anderson. Anderson is certainly not cut out for Coors as he has just a 16.1% K rate and 8.6% SwStr. On the year he has a 5.06 ERA / 4.66 xFIP / 5.16 SIERA with a 8.2% K-BB and .358 xwOBA allowed. Charlie Blackmon (.388 xwOBA vs. RHP at home this year), Trevor Story (.379), Nolan Arenado (.358), Ryan McMahon (.354) and David Dahl (.347) are all obvious plays tonight. McMahon will be the cheapest of the bunch but will likely hit towards the bottom of the order. Tony Wolters (.278) is a nice value option at catcher at just $3.2k on Draftkings. Ian Desmond (.287) and Daniel Murphy (.285) have failed to take advantage of Coors field thus far but are certainly still in play.

The Giants currently have a 6.44 implied line and versus Peter Lambert, who actually profiles similarly to Anderson. Lambert has struck out just 17.2% of batters and owns just a 7.4% SwStr, not exactly a profile that plays at Coors. He does own a solid 48.1% GB rate, though he also owns a 23.8% HR/FB and 1.96 HR/9. Brandon Belt (.366 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Stephen Vogt (.357), Buster Posey (.345), Donavan Solano (.332), Austin Slater (.327) and Mike Yastrzemski (.316) are all options tonight. Belt is especially intriguing, leading off at a price of just $4k on Draftkings.

The Obvious Spot Is The Right Spot

It doesn't get much better than two low strikeout pitchers squaring off at Coors Field. The only thing that makes it tough to load up are the high salaries, particularly on the Rockies side. But on FD, we've got a nice discount on David Dahl and Daniel Murphy to get access to the middle of the Rockies lineup. The Giants' Shaun Anderson has struck out just 12.8% of lefties with just a moderate ground ball lean and no sign that he's going to be able to limit hard contact.

David Dahl (foot) scratched Friday; Garrett Hampson replaces

Dahl has been scratched from the Colorado Rockies original confirmed lineup and will not start in the Friday's matchup against the New York Yankees due to a left foot contusion. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Garrett Hampson, who will now play left field and slot into the ninth spot in the order, which shuffles quite a few players around in the Rockies batting order but, most notably, bumps Daniel Murphy and Ryan McMahon up to fourth and sixth, respectively. Therefore, be sure to double-check the Starting Lineups page for the updated lineup as Colorado faces off against left-hander J.A. Happ on the road this evening.

Chalk Stack

If you’re looking to avoid high ownership, look elsewhere. The Colorado Rockies are currently expected to be the top owned team on Monday’s slate by a *wide* margin as SlateIQ lists their total projected ownership at 180%, followed by the San Francisco Giants (126%) and the Cincinnati Reds (69%). With this being the second game of a double-header it’s important to keep a close eye on the Rockies lineup as one of their studs could very well sit. Based on Game 1’s lineup it’s safe to assume that Daniel Murphy and Chris Iannetta will be in Game 2’s lineup.

We got a good glimpse of Coors field at it’s finest over the weekend as the Reds and Rockies combined for 45 total runs in their two-games on Saturday and Sunday. Due to the elevation and large outfield, Coors can wreak havoc on opposing pitchers of all skill-levels. Unfortunately for Dereck Rodriguez, he’s not a very talented pitcher and has struggled big time over 56.1 Big League injuries this year with a walk-rate (9.2%) that almost matches his strikeout rate (14.5%). There’s very little encouraging about Rodriguez and his numbers this season as the righty simply doesn’t miss bats and allows a ton of hard contact (45 Hard%).

Colorado hitters will be a core piece of cash game builds and can be used as building blocks in single-entry and 3-max tournaments. Due to expected high ownership it makes sense to take a stand against them in multi-entry tournaments that have a top heavy payout structure.

Cost Effective Without Sacrificing Upside

David Dahl is the most cost friendly way to get exposure to the Rockies offense without unnecessarily sacrificing upside. Dahl has been stellar against right-handed pitching over his short career (120 wRC+) and has shown plenty of power with a .245 ISO. A home matchup against Tanner Roark is a favorable one for Dahl . Despite Roark's solid 3.51 ERA this season he has struggled both with the ability to induce groundballs (35.7%) and generate soft contact (15.8%). The combination of hard-hit flyballs is unlikely to translate well at Coors and Dahl should find himself with plenty of run producing opportunities.

Rockies have an implied total over 7 this afternoon vs. Margevicius in Coors

Margevicius is another pitcher (like Eric Lauer yesterday) that just isn’t cut out for Coors given the tiny 16.2% K rate and 9.6% SwStr. Overall, Margevicius has a 5.02 ERA, 4.91 xFIP, 5.03 SIERA, 9.2% K-BB and 37.8% hard contact. He’s also allowed a .346 xwOBA on the year with a 7.6% barrel rate and 87.1 MPH aEV. Charlie Blackmon (.366 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Nolan Arenado (.358), Ian Desmond (.418), David Dahl (.412), Trevor Story (.321), Ryan McMahon (.335), Chris Iannetta (.321) and Mark Reynolds (.279) are all the projected batters in the Rockies lineup this afternoon and they are all in play given the matchup in Coors. Iannetta has the highest xwOBA over the past 14 days with a .453 mark, followed by Charlie Blackmon (.449) and David Dahl (.377). The Rockies currently have a 7.14 implied total versus Margevicius and the Padres today.

Rox have a good matchup versus Lauer in Coors tonight

There are a few types of pitchers that can survive Coors field, but Eric Lauer certainly isn’t one of them. Though Lauer does have a respectable GB rate at 43.5%, it won’t be enough to overcome the fact that he has just a 19% K rate and putrid 6.5% SwStr along with a 41.5% hard contact on the year. David Dahl (.418 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Ian Desmond (.403), Nolan Arenado (.365), Charlie Blackmon (.360), Chris Iannetta (.321), Trevor Story (.307) and Brendan Rodgers (.202) are all good options in the Rockies’ projected order. Rodgers has had a slow start but had a 158 wRC+ in AAA this year and is a bargain on Draftkings at just $3.7k. Desmond is also very affordable at just $4.3k. Charlie Blackmon has been the Rockies hottest hitter over the past 14 days with a .466 xwOBA, followed by Chris Iannetta with a .426 mark. The Rockies have a healthy 6.21 implied line heading into their matchup with the Padres tonight.

Rockies bats a no-brainer option with a 7.64 implied total vs. Edwin Jackson

Journeyman Edwin Jackson gets the start for the Blue Jays tonight. Over 14 innings so far in 2019, Jackson has a 9 ERA / 5.53 xFIP / 5.15 SIERA with a 7.8% K-BB. He also has an ugly .408 xwOBA allowed and an atrocious 17.6% barrel rate allowed. Jackson hasn’t put together a good season for a while now and is projected as roughly a 5.50 ERA pitcher by most projection systems going forward. Rockies’ hitters project to see a good amount of plate appearances vs. the Jays’ bullpen, who has had a decent 4.00 SIERA in 2019 but a 6th worst 1.50 HR/9 allowed. Of the Rockies’ projected order, David Dahl (.358 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Nolan Arenado (.353), Trevor Story (.351) and Ryan McMahon (.340) are the best options vs. RHP and are all hitting in the top part of the order. Raimel Tapia (.261) is projected to leadoff and is just $4.6k on Draftkings. Dahl is projected to hit 3rd and is just $4.7k. Ian Desmond (.336) has quietly had a decent season and is just $4.4k. All Rockies’ bats are more than fairly priced today considering their massive implied total of 7.64.

Rockies have an otherworldly 7.37 implied total vs. Hess in Coors

David Hess has been horrific this year with a 6.75 ERA / 5.94 xFIP / 5.34 SIERA to go along with a 56% FB rate and just a 7.7% SwStr. Hess also has one of the worst xwOBAs in the league with a .408 mark, as well as a league worst 16.8% barrel rate (!) and 91.8 aEV. Hess’ only pitch with an xwOBA < .300 is his curve, which he has only thrown 5% of the time. His four seamer (53.5% usage, .447 xwOBA allowed) and his slider (25.2% usage, .354 xwOBA allowed) are his two main pitches and both get routinely hammered. Trevor Story (.358 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Nolan Arenado (.348), David Dahl (.344), Ian Desmond (.321) and Daniel Murphy (.276) are the best bats in the Rockies’ projected order today. Raimel Tapia (.252) projects to lead off and is a nice value at $4.8k given the matchup and environment. Brendan Rodgers (158 wRC+ in AAA this year) is a nice option at just $4.6k if he cracks the starting lineup. Rockies bats are a no-brainer play in the main slate today given the total, expect sky-high ownership.
