Jon Rahm Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Roster Lock reminder for the Farmers Insurance Open

With a little over 30 minutes until roster lock for this week's Farmers Insurance Open, there is no major news to report. This week rosters lock on Wednesday instead of Thursday so please make sure to double-check your rosters prior to lock. Ownership numbers will be live a few minutes after lock on the new ReslutsDB powered by Fantasy Labs. Good luck this week grinders!!!

Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm are the clear top two options at this week's American Express

The American Express tournament returns to its Pro-Am format this year. For DFS purposes that means we get 3 guaranteed rounds of golf prior to a Saturday cut. This also means that the first three days of competition will feature somewhat easy pin locations to accommodate the amateur golfers in the field. In terms of projected ownership, Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay are clearly the two favorites in terms of top-end options in this week's field. Due to the fact that you get three rounds of play in from golfers, it would not be too crazy for many lineups to try and fit both top players in a stars and scrubs roster format. For those who are not going to jam both players in you would imagine a large portion of rosters will contain one of Rahm or Cantlay. For those multi-lineup tournament players who like to keep this type of ownership play in mind while building rosters, there is a strong angle to fade both players for a portion of your rosters. Rosters that start with one or two of the players priced above 9k will be a very interesting way to differentiate from the popular Rahm and Cantlay builds.

Still waiting for news on the status of Jon Rahm

With less than 20 minutes to lineup lock, there has been no news on the status of Jon Rahm. After missing the Pro-Am yesterday afternoon with a stomach bug Rahm is considered to be iffy for this week's event. We will update if his status changes, but for now, Rahm is still in the field.

Jon Rahm skips out on Wednesday Pro-AM

With nine days until the start of the Ryder Cup, Jon Rahm decided to skip out on this week's Fortinet Championship pro-am. Citing stomach pain as the reason for not playing today, the world's number one golfer should be considered questionable to play in this week's event. Rahm has missed out on some important golf due to COVID in the last two months, but at the time of this post, the word around his illness is just a stomach bug. Rahm plays in the morning wave, so we should have an idea prior to lock on the status of his health.

My Pick to Win this Week

I originally had Tiger Woods and Tommy Fleetwood as conviction plays, but I didn’t hear enough from Tiger in his press conference and I don’t love that it’s going to be cold. He’s said it time and time again that it takes a lot longer for his back to get loose in cold weather. I still like Fleetwood for tournaments, but he’s gathering more and more ownership throughout the week. With such an importance on finishing position points, I decided to play Rahm and pair him with another value play. Rahm has played well on difficult courses since the restart (wins at Muirfield Village and Olympia Fields) and he’s one of the only bombers in the field that consistently hits fairways. If he hits his driver well, he will have a huge advantage over the rest of the field. He rates out well in my hole yardage breakdown and he appears poised to hoist his first major trophy. He also said that he was “hoping” for incredibly difficult conditions.

Elite Top End Option

Last week’s finish was truly some epic golf. After Dustin Johnson drained a 43 foot birdie on the 72nd hole to send the BMW Championship into a playoff, Jon Rahm responded with a 66 footer of his own on the first playoff hole. Talk about a finish! Dustin Johnson would be the easy choice as the best golfer on the board this week, but Rahm is my pick at the top. Sure, he starts two strokes behind DJ, but Rahm also comes in at a reasonable price discount for that two shot difference. Two strokes is not a massive difference over four rounds of golf. Rahm is a streaky golfer who should be full of confidence after the epic playoff win at Olympia Fields, and Rahm has finished inside the top 12 in each of his three trips to East Lake. He ranks third on Tour in ball striking and should definitely be in the mix for hsi first ever FedEx Cup trophy. I believe he will be the most motivated golfer in the field this week.

Great Option At The Top

Top Spend On The Board

If this course is going to play long and difficult, I’ll give plenty of edges to Rahm. He is not shy about pulling driver when he needs to, and that should serve Rahm nicely around this beast of a golf course. He grades out very well statistically (2nd in total driving, 10th in par four scoring) and should be in the mix come the weekend. He is my one priority spend at the top this week, as he tends to excel on harder courses. He showed signs of life last week with four steady rounds and a top ten finish, and I like the trends heading into the second playoff event. Rahm is definitely my favorite top end spend of the week.

Bryson DeChambeau returns to the site of his U.S. Amateur win

Bryson DeChambeau took to Instagram today as he returns to the site of perhaps his biggest win in the world of golf. DeChambeau won the 2015 U.S Amateur at Olympia Fields and will look to build on his past experiences for this week's BMW Championship. With a revamped game that now exploits his ability to hit the ball as far as possible, it will be interesting to see how DeChambeau plays this course in comparison to his first visit at Olympia Fields. DeChambeau will not be the only golfer in the field from the 2015 U.S Amateur. Other notable names in this week's field that played in the 2015 U.S. Amateur are also tagged in this post. Jon Rahm lost in the round of 16 narrowly missing out on a chance to win his first USGA event.

Massive Tournament Appeal

Patrick Cantlay is the safe pick and would likely be my preferred choice in cash games, but I really love the potential for Rahm in tournaments. Rahm won’t get the same buzz that the likes of Woods, Cantlay, McIlroy, and DeChambeau are getting in this loaded field, especially since Rahm struggled through three rounds here a week ago. Well, Rahm quietly shot a blistering 64 on Sunday. What is even more impressive is that he did that while not even gaining a full stroke with the flat stick. He made eight birdies and an eagle while gaining over SIX strokes on the field from tee to green. Rahm has a reputation as a careless bomber, but that feels like an unfair generalization. He will be aggressive when he needs to be, but he also dials it back at times. Rahm currently ranks fifth on Tour in ball striking in the 2019-2020 season, and I think he has the potential to sneak in for a win when people are least expecting it.
