DraftKings Logo

DraftKings was just a concept when VistaPrint executives Jason Robins, Matthew Kalish, and Paul Liberman left the billion-dollar printing company in early 2012 to pursue the Daily Fantasy site full-time. DraftKings operates out of Boston armed with venture capital and a fully-committed team to giving Daily Fantasy users a ‘royal’ experience. Loaded with freerolls, bonuses and guaranteed prizepools, and regular Overlay, DraftKings knows how to attract the Daily Fantasy Grinder. This is definitely a site you’ll want in your daily fantasy arsenal. They took a leap of faith and offered a 3.1 million dollar prize pool (including a $1,000,000 first prize) for their 2013 NFL end-of-season tournament, the Fantasy Millionaire Grand Final! It was a huge success for DraftKings and the DFS industry as a whole, and with the company continuing to secure big-time funding, they will only continue to grow. Game Offerings

DraftKings hosts daily fantasy games for all major sports, as well as college football and basketball. . With huge GPPs available for all of these styles and some fun scoring systems, they have made a big imprint on the daily fantasy market and will continue to shine as one of the top three sites in the industry alongside FanDuel and DraftStreet.

DraftKings offers Salary Cap games at a buy-in range of free, all the way up to $5,200! They have a variety of league sizes: heads-up, five-man, ten-man and ‘Tournaments,’ which can include thousands of players. They also offer large field double-ups (ranging from 50-200 entries). If DraftKings guaranteed prize-pool tournaments are any indication of what’s to come, then we should be in store for some nice promos as the site continues to grow it’s player base.

For NFL action, DraftKings hosted the 3.1 million dollar Fantasy Millionaire Grand Final in December of 2013. Qualifiers ran from Week 1 to Week 15, and came to a head with over 2000 entries competing for a 1 million dollar first prize! This event was a huge success and put DraftKings in the DFS spotlight, firmly entrenching them as one of the industry leaders. There are more details shown in the bonuses and promotions section of this DraftKings review.

In terms of College sports, DraftKings offers some of the best variety across the industry. They continue to run huge GPPs for CFB and CBB, as well as their other standard game offerings discussed with MLB and NFL.

The same exciting tournament-style from Online Poker has arrived to the Daily Fantasy scene, thanks to DraftKings. You can jump in at Step 1 for $2.00 and work your way to the top two to win $200 CASH. Steps tournaments are a 4-level series of contests with continually higher buy-ins, peaking with huge cash prizes at the last step. The goal is to advance at each step by winning a ticket to the next level. No need to worry about advancing on your first attempt, as contests also award retry tickets and contests at each step run every day! For the impatient, you can simply buy in directly to any step so you don’t have to start at the bottom.

DraftKings Draft Rooms

The site is as intuitive as it gets, and I’ve yet to experience a single bug or glitch while playing. While well-organized and crisp in design, there are a few features omitted from the experience that leave something left to be desired. The lack of a chat box is odd in Daily Fantasy, and takes away from the community experience, but chat can also bring some negative effects with it as well. Bad information given out by other players and chat trolls are something you don’t need to worry about while playing at DraftKings, which is appreciated by some. The community aspects are lacking in general, with no forums or leaderboards available either. However, this is a relatively small issue and can be overlooked easily if you enjoy the game play and competition on DraftKings.

The core essentials are great though. Live Scoring was seamless, though could use more displayed information, and the lineup building process was efficient and a fun experience. All in all, the site interface is a huge win for DraftKings and makes following the action very exciting. They also offer import and export lineup options as well as the ability to “multi-team edit” where you can quickly view all of the players you selected across all lineups and efficiently replace one player in all lineups.

Last but not least, their player profile pages are some of the coolest available in daily fantasy. Shown below, they come with a number of awesome features that make drafting top players easier for you. They show player stats including recent fantasy point performances. Then, you can see recent play news in a box to the bottom-left as well as sport-related tweets to the bottom right. For example, the Goran Dragic player card shown below has information about Dragic on the left and information from around the NBA on the right.

DraftKings Player Profile Pages are state of the art

DraftKings also has an impressive mobile experience where you can easily login, join leagues, see your results and edit lineups all from your mobile device. With all of their sports, users are given an opportunity to edit their players who have not taken the field yet up until their individual kickoffs, so the ability to change out a player on your mobile device is perfect!

Here’s a list of capabilities available on DK Mobile:

  • Contests Lobby Where You Can Enter Events
  • View “My Account” Information
  • Deposit Funds
  • View Contests You Have Entered (Current, Upcoming and Past)
  • Edit Your Lineups from Mobile Device

Roster, Rules and Scoring

DraftKings’ roster, rules and scoring settings are up to par for what you look for in your go-to Daily Fantasy site. It’s MLB roster settings match that of FanDuel’s, so it’s familiar in that regard. Also, there are no surprises when it comes to the contest rules and settings. However, the scoring was a pleasant surprise when I delved into my first MLB contest on DK. I’ve always wondered why decimals were used in Daily Fantasy MLB, and the DraftKings team must’ve felt the same way as points awarded in MLB range from -2 to 8 points per stat occurence, using integers only. Sure the numbers are higher than you’re used to, but it makes for an easier viewer-experience for most to calculate their player’s scores in their heads. That said, my jaw still dropped a little when I saw Jason Kubel drop 46 points on my first night of playing :)

NFL and College Football scoring systems are more standard, the only exception being their bonuses. Bonuses are awarded to Quarterbacks who throw for over 300 yards, Running Backs who rush for over 100 yards, and Wide Receivers who have over 100 yards receiving each week. The bonus for achieving any of these goals is 3 added points.

For the RotoGrinders community, this feature is one of the best the site has to offer. Other major sites such as FanDuel and DraftStreet lock their rosters when the first game of the day starts, but DraftKings allows you to edit your lineups throughout the day until each individual player begins their game. For instance, say Dwayne Wade is listed as a game-time decision and has a great match-up with a 9PM start time (while rosters lock at 7PM).. If you really want to roster Wade, you can leave him in your lineup throughout the day and if he is ruled out at 8:45, you can simply swap him with another player that starts at the same time (or later) as Wade. Late-Swap allows you to take some risks, because players on FanDuel and DraftStreet will be much more conservative when it comes to rostering players with questionable tags that begin their games after rosters lock.

Bonuses and Promotions

You did not misread the DraftKings Review above…DraftKings offers a 100% Deposit Bonus up to $600! If you’re an online poker player, this bonus might look familiar as the one that Full Tilt Poker used when they first opened their doors; We haven’t seen anything this big in Daily Fantasy yet, and in my opinion this is the BEST deposit bonus seen to date in the Daily Fantasy realm. The bonus will release at a rate of 4% (similar to how FanDuel disperses bonuses) which may turn some heads, but it’s tough to overlook the long-term value here.

Speaking of Poker.. DraftKings partnered with the World Poker Tour in 2013 to offer a VIP package to the Winter Poker Open, which will be the first of many DraftKings/World Poker Tour events. DraftKings will serve as the WPT’s exclusive daily fantasy sports site, running live promotions and contests at WPT stops in the U.S. The company will also host parties for all WPT players at the WPT bestbet Jacksonville Fall Poker Scramble and WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas! DraftKings runs satellites to these events in NFL, NBA, and CFB, so you’ll have plenty of chances to qualify. Poker and Daily Fantasy Sports have a lot of similarities, so it’s nice to see the two industries merge with this partnership.

Daily and Weekly Freerolls

As if the deposit bonus isn’t enough to lure you in, DraftKings also offers a daily freeroll as well as a huge weekly freeroll to reward their players.

The deposit bonus releases in increments of $1 for every 100 Frequent Player Points (FPP’s) you earn. FPP’s are earned when joining any paid contest on the site. You do not receive FPP’s when you enter free contests, such as FreeRolls. The higher the entry fee, the more FPP’s you earn upon joining that contest. In addition, once you have earned 6,000 or more FPP’s you can cash them in for free entries into specific contests. In addition, all deposit bonuses have a four month expiration date on them. In the event that your deposit bonus expires, contact DraftKings support at support@draftkings.com.
