Alfred Dunhill Championship
It was a great week for the conviction plays at the RSM Classic (Ian Poulter, Cameron Tringale, and Matthew NeSmith) and a bad week for the core plays (Webb Simpson, Brian Harman, and Denny McCarthy). There was carnage all over the place in terms of big names missing the cut and ultimately, you could cash in tournaments with 4-of-6 if you had a couple golfers in contention. With it being Thanksgiving in the states this week, we don’t have a PGA Tour event on the schedule. While I know a lot less about the European Tour, I was able to adjust my model for this week’s event and feel good enough about it to write an article. At the very least, it should be fun to dip our toes into the European waters for a week.
The Alfred Dunhill Championship will be held at Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa. The course is a Par 72 that measures over 7,200 yards and features four par fives. The event has been held here since 2004, so there is plenty of course history to work with. If you are wondering why you can’t find course history for 2017, the course was closed for renovation. Over the last two years, the fairways and greens have played firmer and faster after the renovation, which could have something to do with the tougher scoring environments we’ve seen. In terms of course fit, I’m not too picky this week. I’m looking for golfers that have good long-term form, good recent form, and/or good course history.
