PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for the Charles Schwab Challenge

Who is your top contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: Tony Finau – The underlying statistics for Finau are certainly more encouraging than his recent finishes. He regularly gains off the tee, he has gained at least 2 strokes on approach in 8 of his last 10 starts, and he’s one of the most underrated on TOUR around the green. The problem this year has been the putter. While he might continue to struggle with the putter, it’s worth noting that he’s 32nd in this field in strokes gained putting on bentgrass greens over the last 2 years. He plays well in the wind, is one of the best in the field in Texas, and has four top-25 finishes at this event in the last five years.

stlcardinals84: Tony Finau – It seems like most DFS players have gone away from Finau of late, which is a bit odd given that he used to be something of a “DFS darling.” If you go back to 2-3 years ago, you’d be hard pressed to find a tournament where Finau played and wasn’t at least semi-popular. That hasn’t been the case this year, and ownership has remained somewhat low despite the fact that his tee to green play has been much improved of late. He has seven top 25 finishes in 13 starts in calendar year 2024, and he is 7-for-8 making the cut at this event in his career. I am fine playing him in any DFS format this week.

hondizzle: Tony Finau – I am genuinely surprised to see the early week POWN numbers on Finau so low. I have a feeling that his numbers will trend stronger as the week progresses, but I am happy if they don’t. Finau has played well at this course in the past and comes into the week with a little momentum from The PGA Championship. When I think of Colonial, my mind goes to great ball strikers; after all, they don’t call a part of this course Hogan’s alley for nothing. While Finau is known to many as a long hitter, he is one of the better iron players on TOUR year in and year out. Good ball strikers will be a common theme for my player pool this week, and I love the fact that Finau is flying under the radar in his relative price range.

ezellmt: Jordan Spieth – No offense to my fellow experts (and our projections), but I don’t expect Finau to be that underowned and exceed the number we have him at. Spieth should come in lower, and I think he’s an excellent tournament play. Prior to a missed cut in last year’s edition, here are his finishes at Colonial Country Club: 7, 2, 10, 8, 32, 2, 1, 2, 14, 7. That’s a crazy list of finishes. He wasn’t great last week, but it was mainly his putter that let him down, as he gained in the three other major categories. He’s been driving it great and has only been the field in accuracy twice in his last 12 events.

He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
