The UFC had to slap this card together after losing the main event, and they managed to put together a number of intriguing, albeit relatively low-stakes matchups. The good news for DFS players is that we have a 14-fight slate including 10 athletes who are averaging 3 or more takedowns per 15 minutes. The main event is a knockout waiting to happen as the explosive Johnny Walker looks to continue his heavyweight campaign against the former professional baseball player (and more importantly, professional boxer) Waldo Cortes Acosta. Saturday, we find out if Johnny Walker has another flying knee in the chamber or if Cortes Acosta’s fastball can halt Walker’s rise before it begins in earnest.

Jose Souza ($8,900) vs. Jonny Parsons ($7,300)

Fight Odds: -245 Souza vs. +186 Parsons
Weight Class: 170lb. (Welterweight)

Parsons of the UFC

Jose Souza (1-0 UFC) has had two chances at a first impression, and he managed to muck it up on both occasions. In his first step up in competition against Yusaku Kinoshita (0-2 UFC) on DWCS, he fell behind on the significant strike count by 25, he got dropped, and he got TKO’d in the 3rd round. After winning some regional bouts against post-prime and journeymen-level fighters, he was given an opportunity to debut in the big show against Meng Ding (0-2 UFC; 0-1 DWCS) and managed to eke out an ugly split decision where he ran a reverse marathon, absorbed a ton of low kicks, and relied on his opponent’s complete inability to cut off the cage to win. Souza is still developing as a fighter at 24 years of age, so he does deserve some grace, but he is also frequently getting hurt and touched on film, and it is only a matter of time until he gets his button pushed again if he doesn’t clean up his defense and improve his baseline cardio. He was finished in round 3 in his only pro loss and slowed down badly down the stretch. His poor minute winning is also reflected by the fact all 3 of his decision wins were split or majority decisions.

Jonny Parsons (1-0 UFC) recently turned 35, he last fought professionally in July of 2023, and he has only fought twice since October of 2021. It is hard to make a bullish case for a fighter about whom so much is unknown or based on informed speculation. We know that “The Sluggernaut” has been sidelined dealing with injuries and opening his own gym, but he remains passionate about mixed martial arts generally and Muay Thai specifically. Parsons has virtually no chance to advance up the ranks because of his inconsistent appearances, his age relative to the UFC’s marketing interests (35 with only 1 UFC bout), and his lack of proven wrestling/grappling ability. The upside for Parsons is that Souza is likely to engage him in a stand-up striking affair (both men 0-0 career to the SUB prop), and Parsons has a style that judges seemed to appreciate against Solomon Renfro on DWCS. Parsons is the only man of the pair with a UFC knockout under his belt, he is used to being the smaller man in his fights, and he historically can push harder through the 3rd round than his younger adversary.

You have to favor Souza because of his youth, his size, and his more consistent level of activity, but I don’t rate him very highly (barring additional supporting evidence), and I consider him quite green despite his shiny record. Meanwhile, Parsons is a finished product who prefers to engage in a standup fight, who has proven he can rally from adversity, and who typically builds as the fight goes on. I think if neither man falls, this fight could turn into a war. Souza has been drawn into emotional brawls before on the regional scene, and Parsons knows how to make it a dog fight. The longer the fight extends, the better chance I give Parsons to spring the upset.

Prediction: Jose Souza via KO1/SDEC or Johnny Parsons via KO2/3/SDEC

Seok Hyeon Ko ($9,700) vs. Wellington Turman ($6,500)
