One of the biggest mistakes in Survivor is assuming the most popular pick must also be the best pick.

Week 1 gave us a good example. The Chargers were used by 31.2% of the public, but they appeared on only 17.3% of PoolGenius recommendations.

That does not mean PoolGenius was simply trying to fade the Chargers. Our recommendations accounted for the specific pool, expected field behavior, Future Value, and the alternatives available to each entry, while also recognizing the value of avoiding an extremely popular pick. Those are the game-theory dynamics that help you win Survivor pools.

Week 2 creates another decision where that matters.

Tampa Bay currently has 78% projected win odds and is expected to attract about 30% of Survivor entries. Philadelphia and the LA Chargers have somewhat lower win odds, but they are projected to be dramatically less popular.

That creates a decision worth making rather than simply defaulting to the chalk.

Here are six of the most relevant teams on the current board:

The Week 2 board gives you several legitimate favorites, which could spread public picks more than we saw in Week 1.

But the most interesting decision is what to do if you are considering Tampa Bay.

Before You Pick Tampa Bay, Compare the Chargers

Tampa Bay has a strong 78% projected win probability, and its extremely low 0.1 Future Value makes the Buccaneers easy to spend now.

The issue is popularity.

About 30% of the public is currently projected to use Tampa Bay.

The Chargers, meanwhile, have:

You give up only three percentage points of projected win probability compared with Tampa Bay, but your expected pick popularity falls from 30% to just 6%.

That is a massive change in field exposure.

If Tampa wins, a large chunk of the pool is likely advancing with it. If the Chargers win and Tampa loses, a Chargers entry could survive while nearly one-third of the public field is eliminated.

The Chargers also do not carry much more Future Value than Tampa Bay, so you are not paying a major future opportunity cost to make the move.

For many pools, that makes the Chargers one of the first alternatives we would want to evaluate before simply submitting Tampa Bay.

Chargers vs. Eagles

Philadelphia offers another way to move away from Tampa Bay, but the Chargers currently have the cleaner profile.

The Eagles currently have 73% projected win odds, 11% projected popularity, 0.97 Week 2 EV, and 0.5 Future Value.

The Chargers, meanwhile, have 75% win odds, 6% popularity, 1.01 EV, and 0.3 Future Value.

So if both teams are available, the Chargers currently have higher win odds, lower projected popularity, higher EV, and lower Future Value.

Philadelphia can still make sense depending on your specific pool and the teams available to your entry. But on the current numbers, the Chargers have the stronger overall Week 2 profile in most standard pools.

San Francisco Is the Clear Safety Play

If the objective is maximizing your probability of reaching Week 3, San Francisco stands apart.

The 49ers currently have:

Unlike Tampa Bay, San Francisco’s heavy popularity is backed by the strongest win probability on the board and positive current-week EV.

That makes the 49ers a much stronger chalk case.

The downside is Future Value. San Francisco is significantly more useful later than Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, or the Chargers.

In a small pool, that future cost may not matter very much. In a pool with hundreds or thousands of remaining entries, it becomes more important.

Baltimore Has the Best Current EV, but It Is Expensive

Baltimore may be the most tempting Week 2 team if you sort exclusively by EV.

The Ravens currently have:

That combination of win probability and popularity is outstanding for the current week.

The problem is the 2.8 Future Value, the highest of the leading Week 2 options.

Baltimore has premium opportunities later in the season, so using the Ravens now means spending one of your most useful future teams.

That can make sense if your pool is unlikely to last deep into the season. It becomes a much bigger consideration in large fields and formats with additional future pick requirements.

Do Not Pick the Rams Just Because They Are 2% Popular

The Rams provide a useful reminder that low ownership does not automatically make a team attractive.

They have 74% win odds, only 2% popularity, and positive 1.02 EV.

That looks excellent until you consider their 2.4 Future Value.

The Rams have several significantly stronger future spots, making them one of the more expensive teams to spend in Week 2. As you can see in the season planner above, they have multiple weeks where they project to be among the top favorites on the board as you move through the season.

If you need leverage, there are alternatives such as the Chargers that provide low popularity without giving up nearly as much future utility.

The question should never be simply, “Which favorite is least popular?”

It should be: What am I getting for the additional risk, and what am I giving up later?

What Should You Actually Do in Week 2?

Start with the size and expected duration of your pool.

If you are in a smaller pool and only expect the contest to last until around Thanksgiving, San Francisco’s 85% win odds are difficult to ignore. This is currently the last time the 49ers are projected above 80% win odds for the rest of the season, and the back half of their schedule looks considerably more difficult.

If you are looking to move away from Tampa Bay’s projected 30% popularity, the Chargers stand out as the strongest alternative. They currently have 75% win odds, just 6% projected popularity, and only 0.3 Future Value. Compared with Philadelphia, the Chargers have higher win odds, are less popular, and cost less future utility.

Philadelphia can still make sense if you want another way off the Tampa Bay chalk, but at the current numbers, the Chargers may have the cleaner profile in your specific pool.

And before using Baltimore or the Rams, make sure the current-week advantage is worth spending significantly more Future Value. In many pools, it will not be.

Those are the key Week 2 decisions.

The exact answer still depends on the pool you are trying to win.
