The PGA TOUR schedule always feels a bit weird at this time of year. Baseball season is winding down, the masses have turned their attention to football season, and the previous FedExCup Playoff series just ended a few weeks ago. However, the PGA TOUR fall season starts fresh here in September, and we have a weak field assembled for a new event — the Biltmore Championship, which will be held in Asheville, North Carolina.
Given the fact that the previous season just ended and we have the Presidents Cup next week, there are no “premier” golfers playing this week. The player listing has a glorified Korn Ferry Tour feel to it, but that also adds to the potential edge for true PGA DFS grinders. With many people focusing on football, this is the chance to get ahead of some of the up-and-coming stars we might see in future years.
This new event will be held at what appears to be a beautiful course – The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2005, and it held some Korn Ferry Tour events upon its arrival. However, it has never hosted a professional tournament of any kind. The course is a short par 71 with a unique blend of 5 par 3s, 4 par 5s, and just 9 par 4s. Par 3 scoring gets a bump in the statistical weighting this week. With it being a short, relatively narrow course, approach play, accuracy, and ball striking are key. Distance doesn’t seem to be imperative at this place, and we have basically zero relevant course history. You could try making comparisons, but that feels like a bit of a guessing game. The course did play very difficult when it hosted KFT events, but that was 20 years ago, and golfers are much better these days. I would expect it to play on the easier side of average.

Davis Thompson

Davis Thompson may not be able to be considered a “young rising star” anymore because he’s been on the TOUR for a few years, and that’s certainly fair given the amount of youth we have in this field. However, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Thompson may still be on the ascent portion of his career arc. He finished 7th, 8th, and 14th to close out the summer, falling just short of the FedExCup Playoffs top 70, so he was not able to partake in the playoff events. However, that run of form is very encouraging, and this is the time of year where I would expect him to step on the accelerator and continue to play great golf. He leads this field in approach play and ball striking over the last 36 rounds, and he ranks 5th in total strokes gained over that stretch. While many people consider him a bomber, I am encouraged by the all-around game and think he very much has the potential to win this event.
