Welcome back to the PGA DFS Tournament article! We have the Bank of Utah Championship on the calendar this week, with a rare PGA TOUR event being held in Utah. This is an event that debuted a few years ago as the “Black Desert Championship” on the same course, but the same venue will be hosting for the third time.
After an intriguing Presidents Cup last week, we unfortunately have another weak field assembled, but that is often the case during the fall season. Still, everyone in DFS is operating with the same player pool, and there’s plenty of money to be won in some GPP contests.
For the third straight year, this event will be hosted by the Black Desert Resort course in St. George, Utah. The course is a Par 71 that stretches to over 7,400 yards. While a few holes have been lengthened from the initial edition, the overall length is still moderate by today’s PGA TOUR standards. There are 3 par 5s on the course, and there are also a couple of short par 4s that could be reached from the tee with a good drive. Last year proved that the bomb-and-gouge approach can clearly work around here, as there is very little trouble around the course. Long hitter Michael Brennan took home the title, and this has played as one of the easiest courses on TOUR since its debut.
Bentgrass surfaces are featured throughout the property, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the winning score get to about 25-under par after winning scores of 22-under and 23-under in the first 2 editions. I will be looking at birdie makers, and the course also has wide fairways to where I will prioritize bombers and good total drivers of the ball. Of course, ball striking and approach play are always paramount. Current form certainly doesn’t hurt, especially in a weaker field where confidence could be a key momentum builder, and course history carries a little bit of weight with some golfers seeing the venue for a third time.

Jackson Koivun continues to dominate the headlines given his PGA TOUR victory and dominant showing at the Presidents Cup last week, and he deserves all the accolades he is getting. Meanwhile, Ben James just continues to fly under the radar despite great results of his own. He has missed just a single cut in 9 PGA TOUR starts, with more than half of those starts resulting in top-25 finishes. He has finished 2nd and 3rd in his last couple of starts, and he ranks 4th in this field in total strokes gained over his full PGA TOUR sample size. He’s cheaper than Koivun and will almost assuredly be lower owned, making James a great tournament pivot to start your builds.
