Welcome back, PGA DFS Grinders! This week, the PGA TOUR heads to Japan for the Baycurrent Classic, which was a new event on the calendar a year ago. For the second straight year, it will be held at the beautiful Yokohama Country Club. This tournament uses a composite routing, with the first 16 holes coming from the “West” Course at Yokohama and the final 2 coming from the “East” Course. This spot on the calendar used to be occupied by the ZOZO Championship, which was held in a different location in Japan, so make sure you do not confuse the two events.

Yokohama carries a strange setup. It is not your usual par 71 layout, as it has only 2 par 5s and 3 par 3s. That means we have a whopping 13 par 4s on the scorecard. Many of them are long, and 10 of the final 11 holes on the scorecard are par 4s (both par 5s are among the first 6 holes). I’ve never seen a setup like this used on the PGA TOUR, but Yokohama has been used on the Japanese Tour quite a few times and seemed to be well liked in its debut a year ago. This is also a limited-field event, with only 72 golfers in the field and no cut. That means all golfers will be guaranteed 4 rounds of golf barring a withdrawal or disqualification.

Given that this event does not have ShotLink data and has only been played once, I am not putting a ton of emphasis on course history. I’ll lean on the traditional tee-to-green metrics as my priorities. Given the plethora of par 4s and the fact that the course should play easier this year with pristine weather expected, I will also look at Par 4 Scoring and Birdie or Better Percentage. Strong current form is certainly a bonus as well.

With a limited field, international travel for many golfers, and no cut, I will also not be afraid to embrace variance. In your tournament builds, don’t shy away from targeting options who are projecting for lower ownership. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite GPP options!

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Tournament Breakdown for the Baycurrent Classic

Hideki Matsuyama
DraftKings: $10,200
FanDuel: $12,400

PGA TOUR Golfer Hideki Matsuyama

I am not sure why Hideki Matsuyama isn’t projecting as a more popular option this week, but I am not complaining. This is a relative home game for him in Japan, and you know he will feel comfortable with the course, the jet lag, and the time change. He’s much more used to it than a lot of other PGA TOUR regulars. The form is nothing to sneeze at, either, as Matsuyama finished the summer with a run of 14th-14th-3rd-5th-7th-7th in a tidy 6 start stretch between June and August. He played well at the Presidents Cup two weeks ago, and he’s projecting as one of the lowest owned high-end golfers on the board. I’ll gladly take that, as he ranks near the top of this field in many strokes gained metrics over the past 3 months.
