PGA Projected Ownership: Farmers Insurance Open

rotogrinders_user_23086

Last Week: Hudson Swafford (10.10% pOwn%, 13.19% actual) finally did it! It looked like he was slipping out of contention again on Saturday but scored a solid Sunday 67 to win the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge. Adam Hadwin (6.91% pOwn%, 7.38% actual) cooled down on Sunday after posting a 59 on Saturday to finish second by one stroke. The rest of the CareerBuilder top 10 finishers were mostly low-owned GPP darts. Brendan Steele (9.23% pOwn%, 14.64% actual) was just a few putts away from really contending, finishing T6 trailing Swafford by 4 strokes.

Congrats to max-entry contestant jacraven for taking down the DK $250K Birdie. The winning entry featured a chalky core of Swafford/Howell/Rahm mixed with low-owned Adam Hadwin, Brian Harman and Sony Open bust Anirban Lahiri. The 1st place roster’s average ownership% was 12.02%. Due to the Farmers Insurance Open’s strong field, tougher course and heavy ownership of higher pedigree players; we project this week’s DK $500K Birdie winning roster ownership% average to be 13-14%.

Editor’s Note: In the near future, subscribers to DraftKings PGA Premium content will have access to all current week and historical pOwn% data. Updates will be made throughout the week due to injury news, tout activity, odds/line movement, weather/tee-times, etc. But for this week, focusing on the $3 DK $500K Drive the Green, everyone has access to everything. Enjoy!

This Week’s Tweaks:

The 2017 PGA season is really ramping up now. The Farmers brings us a near perfect storm (hopefully not a storm like we had during R4 of 2016) of enthusiasm this week. NFL is over, the casual fans will be rushing in. DK is doing its best to pull them in, releasing some really nice tourneys with big payouts. Oh, and Tiger is back.

The pricing is soft, so we can target just about anyone and build some really strong pedigreed cores. DK started promoting the tourneys early and finished the pricing before the CareerBuilder was complete. So the strong finishes of Swafford, Hadwin, Harman, Cauley, Stallings and Laird are not efficiently priced in this week. Value is everywhere, chalk will be plentiful. Course history gets a big boost in our pOwn% model this week. This is a Bombers week, for sure. Higher pedigree golfers are always in demand with strong fields and the influx of newer casual PGA DFS players will create even more upward ownership pressure on the recognizable names. It’s a “stars and scrubs” roster construction week.

Last year’s round 4 weather scarred a lot of folks, real players and DFS players alike. But even if some wind patterns are detected, there’s not much we can do about it because of the odd tee time schedules. All the players go off within a smaller window of time in groups of three on two courses. So we are downgrading weather plays this week.

We’re always studying bias bubbles and are focusing on two this week: “A player can’t win on the PGA Tour two weeks in a row, so I’m fading him” and the “jet-lag” narrative. Can Hudson Swafford be in the mix again this week? If Justin Thomas hadn’t of done what he did at the Sony Open, Swafford would be an auto-fade for many sharps. But now, folks aren’t so sure. If Swafford wins the 2017 Farmers, the “Can’t win two-in-a-row” bias bubble may completely crash. There was lots of talk of the circadian disadvantage of Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Byeong-Hun An playing in Abu Dhabi last week. Ultimately, we believe it will have a minimal effect on ownership, but we are interested in the bias.

The sharps say they are rooting for Tiger but fading him. The casual fans will be all over Tiger. We bet even the sharps play some Tiger too.

We will be focusing on the DK $500K ($3 entry) Birdie this week.

Upper Tier ($9.9K +):

jason-day-300x200

Jason Day (27% pOwn%): The only thing that holds Day back is the drama. But the Jason Days of our Lives show has been dull lately, thank God. He has the best course history of the top-5. Touts and Vegas agree that Day may be poised for a strong showing. Hideki slipped a bit at the Sony Open and Dustin Johnson traveled across the planet and back last week. Day rested after shaking off the rust with a T12 at 25% GPP ownership at the SBS Tournament of Champions two weeks ago. Still, DJ will carry the most ownership, but Day won’t be too far behind.

Dustin Johnson (31% pOwn%): Torrey Pines is a place for bombers you say? Then give me the biggest bomber of them all: DJ. But the jet-lag, what about the jet-lag traveling to Abu Dhabi last week? Ah come on man, it’s not like DJ flew coach, right? But what about the study done for MLB, saying it takes one day to fully recover from each hour of time zone travel? What, so you’re telling me is that DJ won’t fully recover from his Abu Dhabi trip for another two weeks? Oh come on man, who did the study? Bryson DeChambeau? Sounds stupid to me. This is a bomber’s course, give me DJ.

Middle Tier ($9.7K – $7.5K):

Brandt Snedeker (21% pOwn%): Course history is en vogue this week. Sneds is the course horse over the last five years. If you go deeper than that with your course history analysis, you’ll probably be at near 100% exposure to Tiger this week. Sneds is sitting in a nice, uncompetitive spot for ownership on the DK salary list (jet-lagged Fowler, cold Casey, Sony Open bust Walker and Louis O.). Line movement for Sneds has been sliding a bit, but his value optics still look great.

Tiger Woods (20% pOwn% and rising): We all want Tiger to succeed. It would be great for the PGA and perhaps even better for DFS golf. He is the only DK entry at $7.9K, sitting right above perhaps the easiest fade of the week, Charley Hoffman. Line movement has been solid and Tiger’s odds of 35/1 looks really good in this salary range. Sure, he’s over bet in Vegas, but it looks good especially to the newer, casual players. Our Monday Tiger pOwn% estimate was around 12%. I’ve tried to put the brakes on his pOwn% throughout the week, but he’s now pushing 20%. Tiger is back.

Lower Tier ($7.4K – $6.3K):

Charles Howell (35% pOwn%): I’m getting a little tired of writing up CHIII. But DK has him on some sick, twisted yo-yo kind of pricing scheme. How could this happen again? Maybe Bryson DeChambeau took a break from his headwear and putting innovations and offered to help DK with its golf pricing algorithms. I’m sure Bryson’s programming would be really neat, very smart. But so off. The CHIII price is so off this week, that contrarians can’t keep off of him. 35% may be too low.

Scott Stallings (15% pOwn%): This week’s course history studs: Brandt Snedeker (recent), Tiger Woods (all-time) and Scott Stallings. Scott Stallings? Yeah, Scott Stallings. Look it up. Well, what has Stallings done lately? He was solo 8th after firing a 66 on Sunday at the CareerBuilder. And Vegas? Stallings is sitting at 77-1, most everyone else in the DK salary neighborhood is around 300-1ish. 15% ownership is too low, only the name-recognition bias is holding it back.

Cheap Scrubs and Darts ($6.3K – $6.0K):

Adam Hadwin (19% pOwn%): Okay, so Hadwin fired a 59 last Saturday and DK feels it’s cool to put him at near minimum salary this week? I’m not exactly sure when DK released the pricing, perhaps they did it before the 59. Whatever the case, Hadwin will be in a lot of cores. Game theory junkies will fade him for the most part, but Hadwin will still push 20%. If the pricing wasn’t so soft, especially at the top, Hadwin would be challenging CHIII.

Grayson Murray (6% pOwn%): High pedigree golfers are popular this week, especially those with long games and good course history at Torrey Pines. But if you want to take a chance on younger high-pedigree and fade the course history, then Grayson is your guy. He was under 70 for the first 3 days of the CareerBuilder and really showed some flashes before cooling off on Sunday. The sample size of data is starting to be there for the SG model-types out there. This guy is trending up.

Updates to pOwn% values (SEE BELOW) will be made Wednesday evening and a few hours before roster lock. Good luck this week Grinders!
