Searching for a Specialist: Arnold Palmer Invitational

The Florida Swing continues this week at Bay Hill Club & Lodge.

The course is a par 72 that plays around 7,450 yards. It features plenty of water hazards, similar to last week. Unlike last week, there are loads of eagle opportunities to offset the big numbers. There is a bit of week-over-week overlap, but overall it’s an entirely new slate when it comes to searching for a specialist.

Looking at last week’s specialist, Graeme McDowell snuck through the cut on Friday, but he fizzled on Saturday and swallowed an MDF. He wasn’t a lineup killer, but not someone that was helping you win GPPs. Let’s look for a bounce-back showing at the API.

This week we look at Performance on Bermuda, Fast Greens, Long Courses, Strong Field Events, and Easy-to-Hit Fairways.

Here we go…

Performance on Bermuda

We saw bermuda-lovin’ Keith Mitchell pop back onto the scene in a big way last week.

Let’s see what other golfers might be licking their chops after a whole lotta’ poa annua on the West Coast Swing.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Sam Burns (1.646 sg:bermuda vs. 0.684 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.733 sg:bermuda vs. 1.013 sg:total)
Corey Conners (1.327 sg:bermuda vs. 0.767 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.944 sg:bermuda vs. 1.441 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.411 sg:bermuda vs. 0.916 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.319 sg:bermuda vs. 1.833 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.475 sg:bermuda vs. 1.038 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.852 sg:bermuda vs. 1.424 sg:total)
Luke List (1.975 sg:bermuda vs. 1.595 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.56 sg:bermuda vs. 1.185 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bermuda since 2014 are Marc Leishman, Billy Horschel, Charles Howell III, Rory McIlroy, and Jason Day.

It’s no coincidence that most of these golfers grew up and/or played their college golf in the Southeast.

Others like Anirban Lahiri and Tyrrell Hatton have yet to truly master the art of reading grainy bermuda grains. Lahiri has called Florida home for a few years now so I’d expect that to improve and Hatton has increased his exposure to these Florida events over the last few years. He will likely also snap out of this split, but it’s not promising in the meantime.

Fast Greens

When Arnie was alive, he made it his goal to have this course play like a U.S. Open off-the-tee but like Augusta around the greens.

Part of that was getting the greens prepped to run as quick as possible. The stimpmeter typically falls in the 12-to-12.75 foot range here at Bay Hill.

The Top 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Michael Thompson (1.637 sg:fast greens vs. 0.816 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.763 sg:fast greens vs. 1.07 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.513 sg:fast greens vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.967 sg:fast greens vs. 1.293 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.429 sg:fast greens vs. 0.815 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.383 sg:fast greens vs. 1.833 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.332 sg:fast greens vs. 0.916 sg:total)
Aaron Wise (1.906 sg:fast greens vs. 1.498 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.193 sg:fast greens vs. 0.804 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.437 sg:fast greens vs. 1.075 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on courses with fast greens since 2014 are Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, and Marc Leishman.

When you get fast greens then course management and approach play becomes more crucial. You need to avoid short-sided yourself in most situations.

Brandt Snedeker is near the bottom of this list. He’s famous for his “pop stroke” on the greens. Perhaps that works a little better on slower, slopey greens.

Long Courses

Bay Hill Club & Lodge is a par 72 that plays around 7,400 yards.

The GCSAA fact sheet lists it as 7,381 yards while the scorecard has it at 7,545 yards. We can expect it to play somewhere in that range all week.

From a hole-by-hole view, there are five par 4s over 450 yards and all four par 3s are 199 yards or longer. That puts an emphasis on long-iron play this week.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.393 sg:long vs. 0.503 sg:total)
Corey Conners (1.402 sg:long vs. 0.767 sg:total)
Talor Gooch (1.533 sg:long vs. 1.025 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.186 sg:long vs. 0.684 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.491 sg:long vs. 1.033 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.784 sg:long vs. 1.34 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.252 sg:long vs. 0.815 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.387 sg:long vs. 0.965 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.017 sg:long vs. 0.687 sg:total)
Danny Willett (0.99 sg:long vs. 0.668 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Long Courses since 2014 are Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and Patrick Reed.

On longer courses, you should either have elite ball-striking or elite scrambling skills. However, you don’t want to rely on scrambling on water-heavy courses like Bay Hill. That puts ball-striking as the top priority, as usual.

Strong Field Events

The legend of Arnold Palmer has continually attracted a strong field to this event. People wanted to honor him when he was alive and even more so now that he’s gone.

Even with Tiger’s WD, this field remains loaded and there aren’t many weak spots from top to bottom.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

Michael Thompson (1.503 sg:strong vs. 0.816 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.047 sg:strong vs. 1.756 sg:total)
Thorbjorn Olesen (1.58 sg:strong vs. 1.289 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.116 sg:strong vs. 1.833 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.923 sg:strong vs. 0.653 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.332 sg:strong vs. 1.075 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.057 sg:strong vs. 0.811 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.551 sg:strong vs. 1.311 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.257 sg:strong vs. 1.033 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.14 sg:strong vs. 0.916 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against Strong Fields since 2014 are Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, and Jason Day.

The red-hot Thompson finds him at the top of this angle. He doesn’t play in that many strong-field events, but he’s finished top 15 in three of his last six strong fields.

Thorbjorn is a very interesting name here, too. Looking at worldwide performance over the last year, he sits inside the top 15 in the percentage of steady rounds (beating the field by 1+ adjusted strokes). His splits against strong fields suggest he’s not afraid of the big stage.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

Over the last five years, the field has averaged over 67% of fairways hit here at Bay Hill.

A part of that is due to the water hazards forcing golfers to club down. What it means for the field is that a higher percentage of approach shots will come from the short grass this week. It may be with a mid-to-long iron, but it will likely be from the fairway which helps.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Keith Mitchell (1.65 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.013 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.401 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.404 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.871 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.236 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.707 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.732 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.279 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.298 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.882 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.727 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.311 sg:total)
Danny Willett (1.051 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.668 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (1.659 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.327 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.016 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.687 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in on Easy-to-Hit Fairways since 2014 are Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Reed, Marc Leishman, and Justin Rose.

Some golfers like to pound it off the tee and worry about the rest later. When it comes to playing on easy-to-hit fairways, they often don’t have that choice. That might explain why big hitters like Ortiz and Bubba find themselves near the bottom of this angle.

Baseline Performance

There are three golfers remaining, but one of them doesn’t pass the test when it comes to baseline performance over the last year.

That would be Scott Brown who grades out as a good course fit and is top 10 in current form. However, he’s outside the top 100 in performance over the last 52 weeks. Ouch.

The Specialist

Bryson DeChambeau
Louis Oosthuizen

The Specialist of the week is the mad scientist, Bryson DeChambeau.

He’s roughly half a stroke better per round when it comes to playing on fast greens. The same goes for playing on bermuda. Perhaps all that science allows him to plot his way around properly and avoid sticky situations.

He’s backed up his course fit with a T27 in his 2016 debut here and a runner-up finish last year.

The secondary specialist is Louis Oosthuizen.

He doesn’t leap off the page in one specific angle, but he’s positive in all five. The larger rank for him is the Easy Fairway angle. That helps explain why Augusta National and St. Andrews have treated him nicely.

The South African has set up shop in Florida for nearly 10 years now. His comfort in the area should make it easy for him to get any neck/back treatments he needs, which is what most gamers worry about when they think about drafting Oosthuizen. As for his history at Bay Hill, he is 3-for-4 with the highlight being a T9 in 2015.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Bryson DeChambeau
Rory Mcilroy
Rickie Fowler
Ian Poulter
Patrick Reed
Brooks Koepka
Hideki Matsuyama
Tommy Fleetwood
Justin Rose
Louis Oosthuizen
Hao Tong Li
Michael Thompson
Billy Horschel
Marc Leishman
Charles Howell III
Lucas Glover
Jason Day
Si Woo Kim
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Luke List

A few interesting names that crack the list are Hao Tong Li and Si Woo Kim.

Si Woo crushes it on bermuda and Hao Tong is not scared of a showdown with the best golfers in the world.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
