Searching for a Specialist: Memorial Tournament

The PGA TOUR heads to Ohio this week for the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club, also known as Jack’s Place.

The event is invite-only and not many of the big names choose to skip it.

The course is a par 72 that features generous fairways and lightning fast bentgrass greens. Let’s try to find out who might fit the course by searching for a specialist.

If you are new to the specialist search, here is a quick primer. The goal of this article is to look at a few key angles for the upcoming event and compare each golfer’s performance in those angles against their long-term baseline. For a golfer to get bucketed as a specialist, they must improve over their baseline in all five angles. At the bottom, I also include a table with the full-field rankings in each angle.

Reviewing last week, our specialist was Joel Dahmen who missed the cut on the number. The secondary specialist was Charley Hoffman who limped through the cut line and then stormed into a top-15 finish. That could have been Dahmen! The Hoffman finish was great, but I always hate to see missed cuts out of any specialists. Let’s fix that as we turn our attention toward Muirfield Village.

Editor’s Note: Beat the odds for this week’s tournament by checking out our basic golf betting tips!

This week we look at Performance on Bentgrass/Poa Greens, Easy-to-Hit Fairways, Performance in Strong Field Events, and Performance on Fast Greens.

Here we go…

Bentgrass/Poa Greens

Muirfield Village features bentgrass putting surfaces, but the location makes it very tough to avoid the poa annua that creeps into the greens.

Listening to a recent Course Reports podcast, the superintendent talked about some of the greens are still predominantly poa annua and some greens are sharing dominance depending on the amount of shade the green gets.

Let’s incorporate both bentgrass and poa annua results into the mix this week.

The 10 Bent/Poa Specialists:

Hao Tong Li (1.219 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.755 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.095 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.686 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.673 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.317 sg:total)
Sam Ryder (1.426 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.072 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.432 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.079 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.148 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.826 sg:total)
Danny Willett (0.907 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.597 sg:total)
Tyrrell Hatton (2.122 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.817 sg:total)
Tony Finau (2.373 sg:bent/poa vs. 2.081 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.069 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.782 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bent/Poa Greens since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Jason Day, Justin Rose, and Phil Mickelson.

We’ve been harping on Keith Mitchell on bermuda all spring so this is another week to lay off the Georgia Bulldog. He ranks inside the top 55 in top-20 rate since 2014 but outside the top 75 when we isolate to bent/poa courses.

Strong Field Events

The big events are big for a reason.

They usually come with additional status exemptions or a big notch in the career belt. It means a lot to get a handshake from Jack Nicklaus on Sunday.

Some golfers rise to the occasion time and time again in these big tournaments.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

Michael Thompson (1.273 sg:strong vs. 0.836 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.276 sg:strong vs. 1.881 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.466 sg:strong vs. 1.079 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.376 sg:strong vs. 1.018 sg:total)
Robert Streb (0.991 sg:strong vs. 0.686 sg:total)
Tony Finau (2.346 sg:strong vs. 2.081 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.185 sg:strong vs. 0.957 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.258 sg:strong vs. 1.04 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.104 sg:strong vs. 0.89 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.008 sg:strong vs. 1.803 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained in Strong Field Events since 2014 are Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, and Justin Thomas.

When I think of big-game hunters I think of Brooks Koepka first (not in the field), but next on the list would probably be Xander Schauffele. Nearly all of his best work comes in the strongest of fields.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

Muirfield Village has yielded 68% fairways hit since 2010.

That ranks as one of the 10 easiest courses in terms of finding fairways.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Bronson Burgoon (1.39 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.782 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.811 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.215 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.476 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.881 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.515 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.079 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.318 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.117 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.276 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.869 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.817 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.445 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.847 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.476 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.294 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.957 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (2.828 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.494 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy-to-Hit Fairways since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, and Marc Leishman.

When fairways are easy to hit it brings in more strategy off the tee. Do you just lay back and play it safe? Do you try to thread some needles? Do you mix and match those strategies?

Performance on Fast Greens

Jack Nicklaus is known for making his courses with generous fairways and also known for ramping up the greens to lightning-level fast.

We are talking 13+ feet on the stimp, which is the fastest these golfers see all year, outside of some of the majors.

The Top 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Max Homa (0.816 sg:fast greens vs. 0.133 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.655 sg:fast greens vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.724 sg:fast greens vs. 1.091 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.878 sg:fast greens vs. 1.286 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.58 sg:fast greens vs. 1.079 sg:total)
Luke List (2.049 sg:fast greens vs. 1.566 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.229 sg:fast greens vs. 1.803 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (1.223 sg:fast greens vs. 0.836 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.271 sg:fast greens vs. 0.89 sg:total)
Beau Hossler (1.535 sg:fast greens vs. 1.181 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on fast greens since 2014 are Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Rose.

Some of the Euro Tour players have talked about fast greens in the past and how it’s a whole different game when it comes to scrambling. Perhaps it’s not so surprising that eight of the bottom 21 in this category started their career primarily across the pond. It’s not an easy adjustment for everyone to make.

Baseline Performance

We now have 10 golfers that are positive in all five angles. Now we can get picky and trim the golfers that don’t grade out properly in long-term baseline or current form.

Peter Uihlein: 84th in 1-Year Baseline
Beau Hossler: 71st in 1-Year Baseline
Harold Varner III: 110th in FORM
Sam Ryder: 82nd in FORM
Steve Stricker: 77th in 1-Year Baseline
Scott Brown: 104th in 1-Year Baseline

Uihlein pops off the page in all four angles, but it’s hard to trust his form and performance over the last year. His driving stats are also a bit scary.

It’s tough to think of HV3 being in bad form when you consider he was playing in the final group at Bethpage Black. His Sunday implosion took the sparkle off that week and he’d missed the cut in four of his previous six starts.

Good course fit from this bunch, but overall there are a bit too many question marks for my liking.

The Specialists

Xander Schauffele
Tony Finau
Sung Kang
Charley Hoffman

Xander is our man this week.

He struggled a bit last week in the wind at Colonial Country Club, but he should really enjoy seeing a soft course at Muirfield Village. If this were playing firm and fast then I would put an emphasis on less-than-driver performance, but with soft conditions, I think golfers like Schauffele will be able to attack a bit more with the big stick. The X-Man is a big-game hunter so this star-studded field should have his ears perked.

Finau just popped last week at Colonial and the numbers suggest he could keep it rolling this week at Muirfield Village. How has he fared here in the past? How about four starts with finishes of T8, T11, T40, and T13. Not too shabby.

Sung Kang is still on cloud nine with a win and solo 7th in his last two starts. There is something about fast greens that brings out the best in Kang. He’s posted the 17th best top-20 rate in this field, when playing on fast greens. His baseline top-20 rate is ranked 63rd in this field so that’s a huge boost when the greens get slick.

Lastly, we have Charley Hoffman who continued to round back into form. He performed well last week as a secondary specialist (13th place) so let’s see if he can match that at Muirfield Village.

The Anti-Specialists

Jason Dufner
Brian Stuard
Ryan Moore
Russell Knox
Brendan Steele
Aaron Baddeley
Billy Horschel
Charles Howell III

Dufner has local ties so I wouldn’t talk anyone out of him if they like him. However, he’s missed the cut in three of his seven visits here so it’s a bit boom or bust for him at Muirfield Village.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Rory Mcilroy
Tony Finau
Rickie Fowler
Hideki Matsuyama
Justin Rose
Matt Kuchar
Patrick Cantlay
Xander Schauffele
Jason Day
Adam Scott
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Jordan Spieth
Bryson DeChambeau
Aaron Wise
Justin Thomas
Keegan Bradley
Joel Dahmen
Lucas Glover
Louis Oosthuizen
Gary Woodland

Not many surprising names on this list. The only “surprises” would be injury question marks like Justin Thomas and Louis Oosthuizen. Dahmen just missed on the number last week as the specialist, but he grades out well again this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 12 weeks (PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
