Searching for a Specialist: PGA Championship

rotogrinders_user_22704

With the final major of the season upon us, we prep for the last (golf) Millionaire Maker before the Masters rolls around next April. Grading out results from last week, both specialists made the cut with Paul Casey earning a T5 and Kuchar grabbing a T17. Nothing to complain about there; let’s keep that momentum rolling as we head to Quail Hollow Club.

Looking at this week’s course, we are going to look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Driver-Heavy Courses, Tough Courses, Major Championships, and finish up with performance on Long Courses.

Here we go …

Driver-Heavy Courses

Quail Hollow has played host to the Wells Fargo Championship for years now. Looking at hole-by-hole data we see that 12 of the 14 driving holes have a lean to driver with the other two also having the option as shorter, risk-reward par 4s.

If the course is playing firm and fast, golfers will be able to club down on a few holes and use the roll of the fairways. That doesn’t seem to be the case given the forecast of storms all week. That means drivers and lots of them!

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists are:

A lot of firepower on the list above. Yang would be the only exception, but his baseline is so low, his increase in performance is not all that notable. Rickie Fowler is the big draw here. He’s pieced together top-5 worthy finishes in 14 of his last 28 starts on driver-heavy courses. That is more than 13% higher than his baseline over that same period of time.

Bermuda Greens

Quail Hollow played with heavily-undulated bentgrass greens until the 2014 edition. Since then the slopes have been lessened and the grass has been shifted to bermuda grass. Let’s see who could take a quick liking to these bermuda greens…

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

We have an influx of Euro Tour stars here. Rafa, Willett, An, and Bernd all have a good track record in the Middle East and Asia, where most of the bermuda courses are on the Euro Tour schedule. It looks to translate nicely to the PGA TOUR, as well. Another name that crushes in Asia but doesn’t have enough PGA TOUR rounds to qualify here is Peter Uihlein. He sets up shop in Florida so bermuda would be the grass he likely practices on.

Looking for upside? Patrick Cantlay posted a runner-up at the Valspar and T3 at the RBC Heritage…both on bermuda. Not a large enough sample for him yet, but the early results are promising, on bermuda especially.

Hard Courses

Quail Hollow typically plays around 1/4 to 1/2 a stroke over par during the Wells Fargo Championship (field average relative to par). For this week’s event, they’ve chopped off one of the par 5s and added 25 yards in length at the same time. That means we should see a field average RTP of 1.5 or tougher.

The Top 10 Hard Course Specialists are:

That is the second straight angle where Danny Willett really pops. If he wasn’t so far out of form, he’d be a great fit here. Someone who doesn’t have the problem with form is Brooks Koepka. He’s posted top-5 worthy finishes in 11 of his last 28 starts on courses that played to a field average of 0.75 or tougher. That is basically double his baseline output. The tougher the better for Brooksy.

Long Courses

Quail Hollow Club is setup to play as long as 7,600 yards this week. That is LONG.There are three par 5s but even still this is a course where you can’t mess around tee-to-green, or it will eat you up.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Holmes, Hoffman, Jimmy, Brooks….POWER. Also, there is Danny Boy, again. Too bad he’s not in form.

The sample size is still largely influenced by Cameron Smith’s Chambers Bay finish. I wouldn’t consider him a true long course specialists just yet, especially with his playing profile that grades out as a short hitter that leans on the short game.

Who has the most top-5 worthy finishes on long courses (7,400+ yards) since 2014? That would be Rickie Fowler with 14.

Performance in Majors

Some golfers know how to peak just in time for majors.

Some golfers like the challenging courses that majors typically offer.

Some golfers like to play up to their competition. They need a big event to get the blood flowing.

This angle should weed through all those possible scenarios and tell us who pops.

The Top 10 Major Championship Specialists:

Someone like Steve Stricker doesn’t post many top 5s at his age, but he still rattles off top 20s with the best of them. Perhaps it’s the electric flat stick that translates so well from course to course.

Someone who can’t lean on the flat stick anymore (literally and figuratively) is Webb Simpson. He fired out of the gate with three top 20s in his first five majors, including a win at the 2012 U.S. Open. Big finishes have been tough to come by since with just one top 20 over his last 20 majors. He is a member at the course this week, so maybe that will help, but I’m not holding my breathe.

Baseline Performance

We’ve highlighted our top 10 for each angle and after the dust settles we have three golfers that remained positive in ALL FIVE angles. However, we have a loaded field this week. With a strong field in play, we can’t afford to take chances on golfers that are slumping. There are two golfers that haven’t earned enough strokes over the last 10 weeks of play, making them good course fits, but GPP-Only options:

Louis Oosthuizen
Jimmy Walker

Walker is an interesting name here. He is the defending PGA Championship winner and was also right in the mix last week before fading on the weekend. He is still recovering from Lyme disease but that flash of form may be enough for some of you to jump aboard. I will wait it out, personally.

The Specialist

Phil Mickelson

phil-mickelson-300x200

Our specialist this week is Phil Mickelson!

Playing in his 100th career major this week, Lefty is teeing it up at a course where he’s finished inside the top 15 in 11 of 13 starts.

His worst finish at Quail Hollow is a T35! There is definitely a great course fit here.

The big question marks lie in his age and his caddie.

For his age, I think he’s proven he can still hang with the big boys this year, entering the final round inside the top 15 on five occasions.

As for his caddie, I have to assume a stat-driven veteran like Phil knows what he is doing when it comes to parting ways with Bones. They hadn’t won since the 2013 Open Championship. For someone with 42 wins on his resume, that is a LONG time.

Mickelson’s results haven’t been great since employing his brother on the bag (MC-T39) but those events weren’t played at a course where he’s excelled like he has at Quail Hollow.

This should be the perfect week for Lefty to get back into contention.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Anirban Lahiri
Keegan Bradley

Lahiri seems to struggle with tough courses and long courses while Bradley sees a big dip on bermuda. I don’t think either are must fade, but neither are popping off the page, either.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
