Searching for a Specialist: The Honda Classic

The Florida Swing gets underway this week at The Honda Classic.

The course is PGA National which is known for the infamous Bear Trap. Not to be confused with the upcoming Snake Pit, or even the Green Mile. The course is loaded with water hazards and it features bermudagrass greens. It’s a pretty big change compared to what these golfers have been seeing on the West Coast so this search should be rather useful to determine what golfers might enjoy the change of coasts.

Looking at last week’s specialist, Sergio Garcia lived up to the tag with a T6 finish and he was right in the mix for third place. It was too hard to catch DJ and Rory at the top. For the year, we’ve now had 20 specialists and seven of them have earned top 10s, a strong rate of 35% so let’s see if we can keep that momentum rolling for the Florida Swing.

This week we look at Performance on Bermuda, Less-than-Driver Courses, Par 70 Courses, Hard-to-Hit Greens, and Performance in the Winter.

Here we go…

Performance on Bermuda

After a whole lot of poa annua, we switch gears this week with some fresh bermudagrass greens.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Sam Burns (1.793 sg:bermuda vs. 0.684 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.969 sg:bermuda vs. 1.424 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.565 sg:bermuda vs. 2.034 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.651 sg:bermuda vs. 1.122 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.167 sg:bermuda vs. 0.644 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (0.992 sg:bermuda vs. 0.474 sg:total)
Luke List (2.094 sg:bermuda vs. 1.595 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.507 sg:bermuda vs. 1.013 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.275 sg:bermuda vs. 0.793 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.369 sg:bermuda vs. 0.916 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bermuda since 2014 are Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson, Billy Horschel, Chris Kirk, and Zach Johnson.

Sam Burn is very interesting here. His sample is rather small, but still over the 30-round threshold. The LSU product has done nearly all of his PGA TOUR damage on bermuda greens. This travel back to the Southeast could really ignite his game.

Less-than-Driver Courses

Because this is such a short course, can put away your driver for most of the round. There are times where you can let it rip, but overall, you want to keep it steady here, given the tree-lined nature of the fairways.

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Alex Noren (2.126 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.588 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.727 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.249 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.219 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.181 sg:total)
Emiliano Grillo (2.058 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.672 sg:total)
Roberto Diaz (0.351 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.028 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.669 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.311 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.039 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.701 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.765 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.463 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.19 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.889 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.835 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.548 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on LT Driver courses since 2014 are Webb Simpson, Justin Thomas, Zach Johnson, Kyle Stanley, and Adam Scott.

As you’d expect from this list, it’s mostly populated with golfers that thrive from fairway to pin and don’t lean heavily on distance.

Par 70 Courses

PGA National’s Champion Course is traditional par 70 which means just two par 5s per round. That’s eight for the week instead of 16 that we see for most par 72s.

That puts an emphasis on par 3 and par 4 scoring. You can’t rely on the par 5s to completely save your rounds.

The Top 10 Par 70 Course Specialists:

Ryan Armour (1.565 sg:par70 vs. 0.94 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.607 sg:par70 vs. 1.024 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.94 sg:par70 vs. 0.358 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.116 sg:par70 vs. 0.584 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.949 sg:par70 vs. 0.463 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.245 sg:par70 vs. -0.181 sg:total)
Stewart Cink (1.785 sg:par70 vs. 1.37 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.439 sg:par70 vs. 2.034 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.796 sg:par70 vs. 1.424 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.641 sg:par70 vs. 2.276 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Par 70 Courses since 2014 are Webb Simpson, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, and Zach Johnson.

Most of these names like a tough course. It makes sense that it would also translate to performance on par 70s because it naturally becomes tougher to score on par 70s, with two fewer par 5s to take advantage of.

Hard-to-Hit Greens

This course has produced tough-to-hit GIR numbers in six of the last eight editions. A part of that is the wind, but it’s also just tough to navigate this course if you get out of position off the tee.

The greens have been enlarged during a renovation since last year but that also produced a re-grasssing of all the greens. As we often see with fresh greens, it takes a few years before things settle in. In the meantime, the greens should play extremely firm this year and even next year.

Combine a lot of water off the tee with firm greens and we should have another year with low GIR rates.

The Top 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Jason Dufner (1.855 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.249 sg:total)
Bill Haas (1.99 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.394 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.113 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.548 sg:total)
Alex Noren (2.108 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.588 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.241 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.792 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.851 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.413 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.51 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.122 sg:total)
John Huh (1.166 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.809 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.377 sg:hard GIR vs. 2.137 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.039 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.804 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in Hard GIR since 2014 are Adam Scott, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson, and Bill Haas.

There are a few routes to success on hard greens. First, you can be elite at scrambling. More missed greens means more chances to get up-and-down (on most courses). That’s not really the case this week because missed greens means a good chance of finding a water hazard.

The other route to success on hard greens is elite iron play. If you find more greens on a normal week then you should still be able to hit a higher clip versus the field. When missing the greens results in penalty strokes then this route becomes even more important.

Winter Performance

The time of year plays a major role when it comes to expected climate, course conditions, and motivation.

For a lot of golfers the winter is just a warmup before they get real serious in the immediate lead-up to the Masters. For others, this is when they come out swinging and pad their FedExCup totals for the year.

The Top 10 Winter Specialists:

Max Homa (0.572 sg:winter vs. -0.39 sg:total)
Talor Gooch (1.729 sg:winter vs. 1.025 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.558 sg:winter vs. 0.913 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.688 sg:winter vs. 2.137 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.857 sg:winter vs. 1.34 sg:total)
Brandon Harkins (1.388 sg:winter vs. 0.927 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.292 sg:winter vs. 0.832 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (0.958 sg:winter vs. 0.503 sg:total)
Harris English (1.464 sg:winter vs. 1.039 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (0.951 sg:winter vs. 0.548 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in Winter Events since 2014 are Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Jason Kokrak, Rickie Fowler, and Webb Simpson.

One name on the bottom of this angle is Brooksy Koepka. He is capable of playing well in the winter (won the 2013 Phoenix Open) but for the most part, he doesn’t kick it into gear until late Spring or early Summer.

Other than his 2015 win at the WMPO, he has just two top 10s over his last 22 starts during the wintertime. It could be the course conditions or climate. Or maybe it truly is a motivational problem as Koepka likes to play against the best in the world on the toughest courses. We don’t check both of those boxes a lot during the winter. It’s a truly bizarre record. He’s finished T23 or worse in his last 11 winter starts, dating back to the 2016 Pebble Pro-Am.

Baseline Performance

We’ve now filtered our search down to four golfers that have positive numbers in all five angles. However, we can now sort through L52 Form and L6 Form to see who falls outside the Top 70 in either category.

Jason Dufner
Ollie Schniederjans
Freddie Jacobson

These golfers grade out admirably in course fit but there is no reason to put your full trust in them, given their lack of performance over the last year.

The Specialist

Graeme McDowell

Similar to last week, it’s another week with just one specialist remaining.

The Northern Irishman now calls Orlando home. That likely explains his strong performance on bermudagrass greens.

G-Mac doesn’t rely on par-5 scoring to get the job done so a par 70 will suit him.

Looking at his history here, the fit certainly pans out with five finishes of T14 or better in his last eight starts.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Sergio Garcia
Adam Scott
Justin Thomas
Billy Horschel
Russell Knox
Daniel Berger
Byeong Hun An
Webb Simpson
Gary Woodland
Luke List
Jason Kokrak
Rickie Fowler
Matt Wallace
Sungjae Im
Cameron Smith
Zach Johnson
Michael Thompson
Emiliano Grillo
Jim Furyk
C.T. Pan

It’s pretty interesting to see Sergio and Scott climb ahead of JT on this list due a slightly better course fit. Matt Wallace is also really intriguing here. His performance over the past year on the Euro Tour puts him inside the top 25 in the field this week. How will that translate to a PGA TOUR setup? We don’t have much data there yet.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
