Searching for a Specialist: Valero Texas Open

The Masters is just over the horizon, but let’s stick to the task at hand.

The Valero Texas Open is taking place this week at TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course. It’s a lengthy, par 72 that was designed by Greg Norman. Let’s find out who will enjoy the tough test this week.

If you are new to the specialist search, here is a quick primer. The goal of this article is to look at a few key angles for the upcoming event and compare each golfer’s performance in those angles against their long-term baseline. For a golfer to get bucketed as a specialist, they must improve over their baseline in all five angles. At the bottom, I also include a table with the full-field rankings in each angle.

Reviewing last week, it was Shawn Stefani who walked into Corales with a specialist tag. He stumbled out of the gate but rebounded on day two, then hovered around field average over the weekend. Nothing flashy from the specialist thanks to that poor opening round. Top-25 Rate for Specialists in 2019 sits at 40 percent while 23% have posted top 10s. It’s been six weeks since the last top 10, though, so we may be due this week in San Antonio.

This week we look at Performance on Overseeded Bermuda, Hard Courses, Par 72 Courses, Long Courses, and Performance in the Wind.

Here we go…

Overseeded Bermuda

TPC San Antonio has a bermudagrass base, but in late October they overseed it with ryegrass to ensure it’s playable when the TOUR rolls into town.

That means you have some bermuda trying to grow, but the overseed is still in full control at this time of year. When I reached out and asked about changes this year the course responded with, “One of the biggest changes compared to previous years that we did was overseed the rough so that it provides players similar conditions to that of Augusta National.”

They’ve done this (overseed the rough) in previous editions but not since 2014. That overseed should provide a more reliable lie out of the rough instead of patchiness and/or flyer central.

The 10 Overseed Specialists:

Andrew Landry (1.654 sg:overseeded vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Josh Teater (1.2 sg:overseeded vs. 0.363 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.522 sg:overseeded vs. 1.725 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.799 sg:overseeded vs. 1.069 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.538 sg:overseeded vs. 0.893 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.531 sg:overseeded vs. 0.92 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.651 sg:overseeded vs. 1.162 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (1.746 sg:overseeded vs. 1.286 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.768 sg:overseeded vs. 1.31 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.843 sg:overseeded vs. 1.393 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Overseed since 2014 are Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar, Jason Kokrak, Daniel Berger, and Brendan Steele.

There tends to be a location theme here with Landry, Mullinax, Walker, and Cook all being from Texas/Alabama/Arkansas area. Then you have Furyk and Taylor from the Northeast. When overseed takes hold, it tends to play like a Northeastern grass. Overall, it’s often about comfort. Knowing that a golfer has performed well on similar grass types is a nice bonus when you are looking into a golfer’s profile.

Hard Courses

This event ranks 9th since 2014 in terms of fewest eagles allowed per 72 holes.

This event ranks 7th since 2014 in terms of fewest birdies allowed per 72 holes. Three of the six ahead of it are major championships.

This course is no pushover and it will really test this field of 144 golfers.

The Top 10 Hard Course Specialists:

Hao Tong Li (1.611 sg:hard vs. 0.599 sg:total)
John Senden (1.459 sg:hard vs. 0.639 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.206 sg:hard vs. 2.519 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.43 sg:hard vs. 0.806 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.209 sg:hard vs. -0.389 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (1.133 sg:hard vs. 0.654 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.976 sg:hard vs. 1.502 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.455 sg:hard vs. 1 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.257 sg:hard vs. -0.193 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.318 sg:hard vs. 0.891 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on hard courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar, Charley Hoffman, and Tony Finau.

Spieth tends to get bored or lose his edge when playing in calm conditions on an easy course. This seems like the perfect fit for his game (when he’s in form) because you have to deal with Texas winds and scrambling gets really tricky around here.

Par 72 Courses

The AT&T Oaks Course is a par 72 which means a four pack of par 5s.

They are tough par 5s but they are still a bit of relief, especially for the bigger hitters or elite wedge players.

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Smylie Kaufman (0.403 sg:par72 vs. -0.389 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.538 sg:par72 vs. -0.09 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.171 sg:par72 vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.059 sg:par72 vs. 0.59 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.711 sg:par72 vs. 1.31 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.701 sg:par72 vs. 1.301 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.995 sg:par72 vs. 1.614 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (0.863 sg:par72 vs. 0.543 sg:total)
Roger Sloan (0.667 sg:par72 vs. 0.353 sg:total)
Andrew Putnam (1.343 sg:par72 vs. 1.034 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Par 72 Courses since 2014 are Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Brendan Steele, Matt Kuchar, and Lucas Glover.

If I had to pick one theme from these lists then it’d be elite drivers of the ball.

Long Courses

This week’s scorecard checks in at 7,435 yards.

There are three par 3s over 205 yards (long irons). There are four par 4s over 450 yards (mid irons). There are three par 5s over 595 yards (steady tee-to-green play required).

Add it all up and it becomes a long, brutal tee-to-green test.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.314 sg:long vs. 0.543 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.269 sg:long vs. 0.597 sg:total)
D.J. Trahan (0.807 sg:long vs. 0.271 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.53 sg:long vs. 1 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.333 sg:long vs. 0.806 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.431 sg:long vs. 0.914 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.917 sg:long vs. 1.431 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.526 sg:long vs. 1.069 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.757 sg:long vs. 1.301 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Long Courses since 2014 are Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Jason Kokrak, and Matt Kuchar.

Kuchar is an interesting name to show up on the quantity list, but I felt the same way about G-Mac showing up on the list last week and look how that turned out.

For long courses, you either need length or elite short game. Kuchar checks the box in the latter.

Performance in the Wind

The average wind speeds here over the last 5 years is over 15 MPH. This is an area that gets pelted with wind, regardless of where it falls on the schedule.

The Top 10 Wind Specialists:

Smylie Kaufman (0.413 sg:wind vs. -0.389 sg:total)
Roberto Diaz (0.809 sg:wind vs. 0.011 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.746 sg:wind vs. 1.057 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (1.157 sg:wind vs. 0.502 sg:total)
Max Homa (0.319 sg:wind vs. -0.286 sg:total)
George McNeill (1.175 sg:wind vs. 0.575 sg:total)
Adam Schenk (1.375 sg:wind vs. 0.791 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.557 sg:wind vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.4 sg:wind vs. 0.882 sg:total)
Harris English (1.468 sg:wind vs. 1.008 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the Wind since 2014 are Tony Finau, Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and Daniel Berger.

Playing well in the wind comes down to elite ball-striking, elite scrambling, and/or experience in similar conditions.

Baseline Performance

We now have seven golfers that are positive in all five angles. They could all be considered specialists but we don’t want to lean on golfers that fall outside the top 70 in current form or baseline performance over the last year.

That removes Sung Kang, George McNeill, Jimmy Walker, Jim Herman, and D.A. Points from the equation.

All five are worth a look if you need something deep but I wouldn’t trust any of them if I were making a single entry.

The Specialist

Nick Taylor
Ryan Palmer

Nick Taylor checks in as one of the top wind players in the field, when comparing versus baseline performance. That kind of play is crucial during this Spring Swing so it’s not a big shock to see him arrive with some good form in his corner. The 30-year-old Canadian has five straight top 35s to his credit and I would expect another this week.

Taylor missed the cut here last year but finished T21 in his 2016 debut and T22 in 2017.

The second on the specialist list is Ryan Palmer.

The Texan’s course history speaks for itself. He is 7-for-9 at TPC San Antonio with five top 15s on his resume. Looking at his numbers, angle-by-angle, it appears that he is fond on lengthy, par 72s. The AT&T Oaks Course definitely fits that bill.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Jim Furyk
Ryan Moore
Billy Horschel
Justin Harding
Jason Kokrak
Denny McCarthy
Tony Finau
Sungjae Im
Rickie Fowler
Lucas Glover
Joost Luiten
Joel Dahmen
Aaron Baddeley
Byeong Hun An
Luke List
Daniel Berger
Abraham Ancer
Adam Schenk
Graeme Mcdowell
Jhonattan Vegas

Justin Harding is the surprise name on the list above. He doesn’t have much PGA TOUR data so he’s not getting any credit for course fit. Instead, he’s rising to the top with strong rankings in recent form and baseline performance over the last year.

Where do the specialists land on this list? Nick Taylor shows up at #22 while Ryan Palmer sits at 35th. Even with there great course fit, we still shouldn’t expect miracle. Anything worse than a top 40 should be considered a bit disappointing, though.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
