The American Express Weather Report and Forecast

PGA golfer Hoey

We are headed into California for The American Express, and the weather in La Quinta looks a whole lot better than the hotels do.

As usual in my PGA weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts.

With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another. You can then use this to your advantage when making your DFS and sports betting picks.

The American Express Weather Forecast

Thursday, January 22nd

An absolutely perfect day for golf. Mild temps and calm winds, likely 3mph or less in the morning, 5mph or less in the afternoon.

Friday, January 23rd

Another great day, winds likely under 5mph most of the day. Some models try to briefly pop a gust or two over 10mph, but I doubt it, and even if we do get up to 10mph winds in the afternoon, that’s still pretty great.

Saturday, January 24th

A little bit more wind possible, but it’s still amazing weather; the afternoon wind could reach as high as 10mph, which is generally considered excellent weather.

Sunday, January 25th

Right back to perfect – winds should stay around 5mph or less for most of the day.

The American Express Weather Thoughts

Not much to complain about here, but also not much weather to take advantage of. It’s dry with light winds all tournament. I don’t see any weather edges to be had.
