Antonio Gates Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Chargers officially activate TE Hunter Henry (ACL) for Divisional Round
Despite the activation, Henry is coming off of an ACL tear just 7 months ago and hasn't played this season making it likely he sees only a small percentage of snaps in Sunday's divisional round game at New England. Antonio Gates and Virgil Green should continue to split the majority of the workload though Henry's presence for even a handful of snaps should provide a small boost to the Chargers' offense as he has loads more pass-catching and play-making ability than Green and Gates at his age, potentially requiring some extra defensive attention from the Patriots.
Antonio Gates (knee) will play Sunday for Chargers
Antonio Gates will be active Sunday for the Chargers despite not practicing this week due to a knee injury. Gates has a limited role in the Chargers offense regardless, splitting reps at the tight end position with fellow TE Virgil Green. Expectations for Gates are low against a Denver defense that has been better of late at pressuring the quarterback.
Schefter: Joe Flacco not expected to play, Lamar Jackson expected to start and handle majority of work; Keke Coutee, Antonio Gates (both Q) expected to play
Joe Flacco is not expected to play Sunday, setting up Lamar Jackson to handle his first career start with Robert Griffin also likely seeing some snaps, although how many is a mystery. There is some GPP viability to Jackson given his rushing upside, but the uncertain snap count does make him a risky proposition for cash games. Jackson is reportedly set to handle the "majority" of the snaps, but that's a vague statement and may depend more so on how he handles things during the game. Alex Collins gets a bump from a dual-threat QB, as it'll force one of the defenders in the box to account for him which isn't the case with Flacco under center. Houston WR Keke Coutee is set to return Sunday, although Demaryius Thomas' presence does eat into his target share. He's on the fringe of GPP viability against a Washington defense that is more vulnerable via the air. Antonio Gates, who like Coutee is officially listed as questionable, is also expected to play Sunday. He hasn't been a consistent target for Phillip Rivers and isn't a recommended DFS target. In other Schefter news, AJ Green (doubtful) isn't expected to play, but that's no surprise.
Antonio Gates (knee) questionable for Sunday
Antonio Gates is officially questionable for Sunday due to a knee injury. Gates has been unable to practice all week, so he seems to be more on the doubtful side of questionable heading into week 11. Even when active, Gates has seen a limited role as part of the Chargers passing attack, so his absence would change little for the team. That said, if Gates is inactive it would possibly mean a few more reps at TE for Virgil Green, who will be taking on his former team in the Chargers divisional matchup with the Broncos.
Antonio Gates (knee) unable to practice again Thursday
Antonio Gates (knee) was unable to practice again Thursday for the Chargers, and is looking unlikely to suit up this weekend against the Broncos. Assuming Gates is unable to go, Virgil Green will be in line to see the majority of the work at the TE position for the Chargers against his former team.
Antonio Gates, Travis Benjamin miss practice again
The absences suggest neither player will play on Sunday against Los Angeles, though participation on Friday will offer the final verdict. Benjamin and Gates aren't particularly desirable on their own, but if they do miss Week 3 then Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Tyrell Williams will all see a bump in targets. That said, going up against a tough Rams defense will be tough for the group and they are no more than contrarian GPP plays.
A pair of Chargers pass catchers fail to fully practice
Travis Benjamin left practice early with a trainer, while Antonio Gates failed to participate at all with an illness. Both are squarely behind teammates Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Tyrell Williams for targets but their absences would bump up the healthy trio.
Let's Hope This Old Man Finds the Fountain of Youth One More Time
After a big week last week with Hunter Henry on the shelf, the price for Old Man Gates increased substantially, and in all honesty it seems a little high. That is until you see how he was utilized last week. Typically just a red-zone target, Gates was utilized on the entire field. Everyone else will be on Jack Doyle (for good reason) at this price range, making Gates an excellent GPP option. He has multi-TD upside against an Oakland team that is third worst in the league against TEs. It may not be the most exciting play, but Rivers trusts him and he should see plenty of targets in a must win game for the Chargers. I am looking to play Gates in about 20 percent of my lineups.
Value at Tight End
Perhaps the old man can still play. With Hunter Henry out for the year, Antonio Gates has resumed the role of #1 tight end in Los Angeles. He caught six passes on eight targets and parlayed those into 81 yards and a score in Week 16. This game still has playoff implications for the Chargers, and there's no reason to "save" Gates for anything at this point. Fire him up as one of the better value to mid-range options at tight end in the season finale.
Old Man Value At TE
If you're looking for value at TE this week, consider taking future hall of famer Antonio Gates, who will be thrust into a larger role on offense following the injury to Hunter Henry. A matchup against a stingy New York Jets TE defense may seem risky, but they have struggled against every elite TE they have faced this season. Gates may not be the elite tight end he once was at the ripe age of 37, but he will still play a large role in LA's passing game, making him a solid punt option industry wide as one of Philip Rivers' most reliable red zone threats.
