Projections Love This Lineup Tonight

The Atlanta Braves (5.11) are the only offense exceeding five implied runs on a 12 game Tuesday night slate in their road matchup against Paolo Espino, while just three more offenses (Astros, Angels, Red Sox) have team run totals above four and a half runs as we find more pitcher friendly weather to close out the season in late September. Current PlateIQ projections (which are fluid and subject to change) certainly love their Braves tonight. Depending on which site you’re looking at, 40% to 50% of the top 10 projected bats tonight are Braves. Paolo Espino has recorded just four sixth inning outs over 17 starts. He’s also struck out just 19% of batters with a 4.8 BB% his only saving grace, keeping estimators not too worse than average and all within half a run of his 4.17 ERA. Batters from either side of the plate are between a .321 and .344 wOBA and xwOBA against him, which probably works against him with a somewhat balanced Atlanta lineup. Ronald Acuna Jr. (119 wRC+, .145 ISO vs RHP this season) is the top projected Atlanta bat and second best overall projected one tonight. Injuries have certainly taken their toll on his performance this year though and that may not be fully captured by projections. Austin Riley (124 wRC+, .227 ISO), Dansby Swanson (107 wRC+, .157 ISO), Matt Olson (111 wRC+, .242 ISO) and Michael Harris (167 wRC+, .269 ISO) are all top projecting bats tonight too.

Mike Trout (164 wRC+, .346 ISO) is the top projecting bat on the board. He’s actually been even better (197 wRC+ over the last 30 days) since a rare back issue was supposed to derail his career. Shohei Ohtani (154 wRC+, .282 ISO) is also a top projecting bat against James Kaprielian, who has five Quality Starts, all since the start of July, including his last two starts. That said, he has just a 5.7 K-BB%. His 4.43 ERA is at least one-quarter of a run below all estimators, while batters from either side exceed a .330 xwOBA against him.

We also have a pair of top projecting Boston bats tonight. In Kyle Bradish’s first stint in the majors he struck out 21.7% of batters, but allowed 11.7% Barrels/BBE. He missed a month, but when he returned, his next 10 starts produced only 4.4% Barrels/BBE, but a slightly lower strikeout rate (20.6%). In his 21st start, last time out, he struck out 10 Astros without a walk on two hits, finishing a single out short of a shutout. Estimators ranging from a 3.81 ERA to a 4.31 FIP are more than one-third of a run below his 4.65 ERA, but RHBs still have a .355 wOBA and .333 xwOBA against him and he’s pitching in a park that favors right-handed batters. LHBs are below a .300 wOBA and xwOBA. None the less, it’s Rafael Devers (152 wRC+, .258 ISO), who projects as a top 10 bat, along with Xander Bogaerts (121 wRC+, .143 ISO).

Two Offenses Dominate Tonight's Stacking Projections

While there are six teams above 4.9 implied runs on a 22 team slate on Tuesday, projections are suggesting that the top two teams, the Braves (5.81) and Giants (5.75) will attract the most attention. They are projected to be the two most popular stacks, though by a larger margin on DraftKings, while Braves smash early simulations around 15% of the time, also more often than any other offense. Platoon bats facing a lefty at Coors easily gives the Giants to top stacking value projection on FanDuel, while pricing is slightly tougher on DraftKings and the Tigers are actually the top projected value stack by a decent margin in their game against Austin Voth, whose velocity has been in decline. Great Career Results Against Two Quality Pitchers

Aaron Nola and Max Fried are two quality pitchers facing off in a very important game that may help decide the NL East. These are rarely pitchers we’re looking to attack, but there are some interesting things that stand out here. First of all, after factoring in weather with park effects, Atlanta may be the second most positive run environment on the board behind only Baltimore tonight. In fact, it may be the only other park on the board you can even call a positive run environment tonight. Secondly, a quick glance at the Daily Matchups page on Baseball Savant features several batters with strong results against these pitchers tonight. Nola has had some struggles with strand rate and RHBs have been near average with a .304 wOBA and .297 xwOBA against him this year. He’s actually been better against LHBs (.288/.267), but a pair of Braves in the middle of the order have had great career success against him. Freddie Freeman (150 wRC+, .224 ISO) punishes most RHPs, but in a large enough sample (65 PAs), he has a five extra base hits (two home runs) with a .404 xwOBA and 91.9 mph EV against Nola. Austin Riley (145 wRC+, .247 ISO) has had a break out season and has even more extra-base hits against Nola (six with three home runs) in just 25 PAs (.462 xwOBA, 93.9 mph EV). On the other side, Max Fried has been better against RHBs (.274 wOBA, .286 xwOBA), which may explain why Bryce Harper (126 wRC+, .152 ISO vs LHP) has handled him so well with two doubles and a home run in 21 PAs (.557 xwOBA, 89.9 mph EV). That might be a small sample, but you can rarely go wrong with Harper this season and he does hit same-handed pitching very well. J.T. Realmuto (102 wRC+, .159 ISO) has been merely average against LHP, but not this LHP (25 PAs – 6 XBH – 3 HR - .420 xwOBA – 90.5 mph EV). As noted at the top, these generally aren’t two pitchers we look to attack, but circumstances tonight suggest it might be worth a shot on this slate.

Power + Speed

Let me preface my love for a Braves stack by saying that I am 100% biased against Steven Matz. Matz undeniably had an excellent second half of the 2019 season, posting a 3.49 ERA over his last 10 starts. Furthermore, he's actually had notable success against the Braves with a 2.94 ERA over 13 starts. You know what I say to that? Who cares! The reason why I will almost always have some exposure against Matz when he toes the rubber is his career 16% HR-to-flyball-ratio and 1.52 HR/9. Oh, it also helps that he has been below average in terms of stolen base prevention every year since 2016. For those not up to date with advanced metrics, all of that was a fancy way of saying Matz allows A LOT of HRs and also a fair amount of stolen bases. Both of those are things we want to chase for fantasy and both are things the Braves lineup is constructed to take advantage of.

Despite injuries, Atlanta lineup should remain potent vs LHP

Mike Montgomery has walked six with as many strikeouts over his last 14 innings (12 ERs). He has allowed the highest rate of contact above a 95 mph EV (45%) and has the second highest xwOBA on the board (.388). Batters from either side of the plate have tattooed him for a wOBA and xwOBA above .350. An Atlanta lineup likely lacking Ronald Acuna and Freddie Freeman tonight is still above five implied runs (5.28) and contains several bats who hammer LHP. Injuries may give Adam Duvall (198 wRC+, .424 ISO), Austin Riley (138 wRC+, .403 ISO) or Adeiny Hechavarria (123 wRC+, .304 ISO) a chance to move up the lineup. All are small sample sizes, but all are also below $2.5K on FanDuel. Josh Donaldson (124 wRC+, .233 ISO) and Ozzie Albies (189 wRC+, .306 ISO) are your more established bats, who will most certainly bat towards the top of the lineup.

Projected Altanta lineup with five batters at or above a .250 ISO vs LHP this year

Jason Vargas’s tenure in Philadelphia hasn’t been very efficient so far. He’s sporting a 4.93 ERA and it’s not even really the contact that’s worsened with the park downgrade. He still has a 4.62 FIP that’s right in line with his season rate, allowing just four HRs in seven starts. His .305 xwOBA over the last 30 days is 42 points less than actual results and seven points lower than his season xwOBA. It’s been the strikeout rate that has actually plummeted all the way down to 13.9%. This is an incredibly dangerous spot for Vargas with a 37.9 GB%. The projected lineup for the Braves features six batters above a 115 wRC+ and five with a .250 ISO or above vs LHP this year. In small samples, Adam Duvall (194 wRC+, .407 ISO, .399 xwOBA) and Austin Riley (167 wRC+, .455 ISO, .439 xwOBA) have destroyed southpaws. Each costs exactly $4K on DraftKings and $2.5K or less on FanDuel. Affordable compliments to a powerful top half of the lineup, likely containing Ronald Acuna (131 wRC+, .281 ISO), Ozzie Albies (175 wRC+, .296 ISO) and Josh Donaldson (123 wRC+, .250 ISO). All three are above a 130 wRC+ and 45% hard hit rate over the last week. The Braves are currently seventh on the board at 5.31 implied runs tonight.

Atlanta lineup features several high K bats vs LHP

Patrick Corbin has allowed a total of eight runs over his last seven starts. He’s the most expensive pitcher on the board and possibly the top overall pitcher tonight. He and Keuchel are the only pitchers on the board averaging more than six innings per start this year, an out to two more per outing than all other high priced starters tonight. His 28.5 K% is third best on the slate, just 2.5 points off the lead. His 3.25 ERA and 3.80 SIERA are second best. A 3.12 DRA is third, while owning the only sub-30 Z-O-Swing% (28.7) on this board. He has had some issues with contact. An 89.7 mph aEV and 10.1% Barrels/BBE are both second worst on the board, but four other pitchers are above his 40.1% 95+ mph EV and his .268 xwOBA over the last month is fourth best. The Braves have been just as good against LHP as they are RHP. A 103 wRC+ is supported by a 17.4 HR/FB and 24.1 Hard-Soft%. Corbin’s usage does not preclude the use of lefty mashing Ronald Acuna (193 wRC+, .338 ISO vs LHP last calendar year), Ozzie Albies (168 wRC+, .235 ISO) or Austin Riley (188 wRC+, .468 ISO) on a small slate, but the Braves have also produced a lineup tonight featuring five batters above a 26 K% vs LHP this year, according to Plate IQ. That total does not include the pitcher’s spot or Adam Duvall (24.8 career K% vs LHP). There are more strikeouts here than players may think.

Cheap 3-Man Power Stack In Scarce Positions

Typically, I wouldn't necessarily target bats against Corbin, but since tonight is a smaller 7-game slate with less options, the power righties could be in play for GPPs. The Braves lineup has four that fit the bill priced under $4k on DraftKings, two of which in Flowers & Albies that fill scarce positions (C/2B) in a lineup. A full 5-man Braves stack isn't completely out of the question, but I'm more inclined to use them as a 2-3-man that allows you access to the more expensive bats in Coors tonight.

Excellent Home Offense Looks to Keep Power Going

It’s not a huge surprise that the Rockies lead the majors in OPS and wOBA with the thin air of Coors Field, but the team that ranks second in OPS and wOBA at home is more of a surprise – the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta is home at SunTrust Park tonight taking on Danny Duffy and the Royals, and the Braves are strong -230 favorites in a game with a 9.5 run total, giving them one of the higher implied run totals on the slate at 5.6 runs. Duffy doesn’t have pronounced platoon splits so I’ll be targeting the power hitters from either side of the plate tonight – Ronald Acuna, Josh Donaldson, Freddie Freeman, and Austin Riley.

Hot Braves lineup takes on struggling Trevor Richards at home

Overall, Trevor Richards has a 4.02 ERA that has been suppressed by pitching half his games in Marlins park; he also has a 5.25 xFIP, 5.05 SIERA on the year with a 41.3% hard contact rate, 10.8% K-BB and 43.5% FB rate. Richards has been even worse over the past 30 days with a 5.20 ERA, 5.25 xFIP and 5.30 SIERA with a 8.3% K-BB. The Marlins also have a 5th worst 4.56 bullpen SIERA over the past 30 days. The Braves come into this game with a 2nd best 121 wRC+ over the past 30 days and have a number of good options in their lineup at home vs. Richards and the Marlins. Freddie Freeman (.418 xwOBA vs. RHP), Ronald Acuna (.383), Josh Donaldson (.376), Nick Markakis (.370), Dansby Swanson (.369), Ozzie Albies (.344), Brian McCann (.342) and Austin Riley (.318) make up the 8 hitters in the ATL lineup and all are in play this afternoon. Donaldson and Markakis stand out as the best values as they are both below $4.5K on Draftkings while Acuna, Swanson, Freeman and Riley are all $5k or more. Acuna has been their hottest hitter with a .402 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks, while Austin Riley (.227) has cooled down after his hot start to the year. The Braves currently have a healthy 5.66 implied total vs. Richards and the Marlins today in Atlanta.
