Billy Hamilton Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Sneaky Stack
It's no surprise that the King's skill-set has declined as his career has progressed. Specifically, the last few seasons have been tough for Hernandez who has posted a SIERA north of 4.19 each of the last few years. Felix posted a career low strikeout rate last season at 18.3% and was unable to generate any swings and misses in his first start of 2019 (4.4 SwStr%) despite just allowing one earned run to the Angels. Park factors aren't working in the Royals favor on Monday but there's still some GPP potential here on the base paths as Felix has been below average in terms of stolen base prevention throughout his career.
The Return of Scott Schebler
The return of Scott Schebler to the Reds lineup may complicate things a bit and move Billy Hamilton back down to the bottom of Cincinnati's order but if the speedster does leadoff on Sunday he’s arguably the top value play of the slate ($2,500 FD; $3,500 DK). Hamilton is unlikely to directly benefit from the wind + warm temps expected at Wrigley in terms of raw power but indirectly should see more at bats, more run producing opportunities, and more run scoring opportunities. If Hamilton leads off and Schebler hits top five, I do prefer Schebler as a point-per-dollar play on DraftKings where only $200 separates the two. If Hamilton hits ninth, he’s out of cash game discussion and should only be used in GPPs.
Speedster Back Atop The Lineup
I miss those days of Billy Hamilton getting on base and wreaking havoc on the base paths. Apparently, so do the Reds. Hamilton was re-inserted back to the top of the lineup this week, perhaps as a way to get him going and add some more speed at the top. He's facing Andrew Suarez today, who has been having a solid rookie season but has struggled against right-handers. On the year, Suarez is allowing a .295 batting average and .842 OPS to righties. 16 of his 17 home runs allowed have also been by right-handed batters. In my mind he easily has one of the higher upsides of all the lead-off hitters given his speed.
Top bat may be missing tonight, but a surprising name in the leadoff spot for a well projected offense
Despite the absence of Joey Votto, the Cincinnati Reds still have one of the top run lines on the board (4.91) at home against the Giants. Casey Kelly makes the spot start and has not made a major league start in the last two calendar years, facing just 24 major league batters in relief since last season. He's faced around 150 batters from each side of the plate for his career, around half of those innings coming in 2012. Batters from either side of the plate have a wOBA against him between .365 and .370. The most interesting development here might be Billy Hamilton (65 wRC+, .071 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) at a low price. He may only need to reach base once to pay off and probably stands a better chance of that than normal considering how strongly this offense is projected. Jose Peraza (87 wRC+, .106 ISO) also only draws value from his low cost and great lineup spot in this matchup. Scooter Gennett (133 wRC+, .200 ISO), Eugenio Suarez (119 wRC+, .223 ISO) and even Preston Tucker (114 wRC+, .192 ISO) are higher quality bats. If you're looking for a punt catcher, you might be able to do worse than Curt Casali (144 wRC+, .222 ISO) for just $3K on DraftKings too.
Two of the top three implied run lines on the FanDuel early slate are in Cincinnati this afternoon
The Mets and Reds early start is only available on FanDuel, where they have the second (Reds 5.07) and third (Mets 4.93) implied run lines on a four game afternoon slate. Needless to say, this is not the game players are looking towards for pitching, though Wheeler (19.1 K%, 9.8 SwStr%, 3.03 DRA) has occasionally shown some upside in favorable matchups, which the Reds (86 wRC+ vs RHP) may be. The park greatly inflates power, but is a near neutral overall run environment. He settled down after the damage was down in his last start against the Rockies (six runs in the first inning), but it was too little, too late. He's struck out three or fewer in three or his five starts, with seven or more in the other two and costs just $5.8K if players have the risk tolerance necessary. Batters from either side of the plate have a wOBA and xwOBA above .330 against him since last year, though he keeps RHBs on the ground 51.7% of the time with a 27.1 Hard% since last season. LHBs have a .363 wOBA, 38.4 Hard% and 42.6 GB%. Jesse Winker (144 wRC+, .179 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Joey Votto (169 wRC+, .228 ISO) are the top players here, the former for less than $3K. A four game slate may even give players reason to consider Billy Hamilton (76 wRC+) against a combination he should be able to run on should he find a way to reach base. On the other side, Sal Romano has not allowed more than two ERs for four straight starts, only completing six innings once though and with a total of 12 strikeouts. The upside is that he hasn't walked more than two in any of those starts, nearly moving his season rate (10.1%) into single digits. There's no upside in his 4.5 SwStr%. All of his ERA estimators are above five and a half and his 94.2 Z-Contact% is worst among all pitchers on any slate on Wednesday. While batters from either side exceed a .330 wOBA against him since last season, only LHBs (.331) remain that high by xwOBA with RHBs dropping to .309 with a 54.9 GB%. None the less, Devin Mesoraco (90 wRC+, .178 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) is a min-priced Catcher in the six hole on a four game slate, facing a pitcher he should know very well. Brandon Nimmo (146 wRC+, .197 ISO) is in the leadoff spot for $2.5K. Wilmer Flores (130 wRC+, .245 ISO) has been surprisingly good against RHP and costs the same. Jay Bruce (115 wRC+, .231 ISO) costs a bit more. Adrian Gonzalez (95 wRC+, .186 ISO) has hit well in this series (186 wRC+, 46.2 Hard% last seven days) and costs less than $3K. Michael Conforto (143 wRC+, .248 ISO) is now batting seventh due to a prolonged slump (18 wRC+ last seven days). Yoenis Cespedes is not in the lineup.
Stolen Base Threat Ratings and Umpire Ratings among new features available to Premium subscribers
Premium subscribers may have noticed some new features available to them this week. Yesterday, the Stolen Base Threats board went live. This leaderboard will show you which speedsters have the best shot at stealing bases independent of their actual ability to reach base tonight. "Takeoff" and "Success" ratings are calculated independently for baserunners, pitchers and catchers to come up with overall individual matchup ratings. While a burner like Jarrod Dyson or Billy Hamilton might be the top overall threat, players still need to factor that in with their ability to reach base. Perhaps someone like Whit Merrifield (121 wRC+, .201 ISO vs LHP since 2017) stands out as the best of both worlds in a matchup with Daniel Norris (RHBs .353 xwOBA, 42.3 Hard% since last season). Noah Syndergaard has always been a pitcher that the opposing team can and will run at will against, provided they can reach base in the first place. Premium and/or BAT subscribers will now also notice Umpire assignments and ratings (Extreme Pitcher, Pitcher, Neutral, Hitter, Extreme Hitter) available in LineupHQ as well, as those assignments become available throughout the day.
Big Reds
I mentioned in the Brewers blurb that game stacking isn't a very common strategy in MLB DFS (except for maybe Coors game stacks) but the Brewers + Reds inarguably are two of the best offenses to target on Tuesday night. Interestingly, the Reds opened with an implied run total sitting at just 3.9 but I would expect that number to creep up as we get closer to first pitch. Junior Guerra has randomly shown flashes of brilliance throughout his time with the Brewers but season long projection sites look unfavorably upon him (ZIPS 5.00 ERA, STEAMER 4.76 ERA, THE BAT 4.95 ERA). While he only allowed 1 ER his first game of the year, Guerra only had a 5.8 SwStr% and left 83% of runners on base. When he's off, Guerra has really struggled containing the long ball and this profiles as a strong HR matchup for Reds power hitters.
Giancarlo Stanton (five HRs last seven days) is tonight's top projected batter against Edwin Jackson
Giancarlo Stanton is the top projected batter on the board tonight. Five of his major league leading 50 HRs have come in the last week and he faces Edwin Jackson in Washington, where weather is a concern. While Jackson has just a 36.4 GB% against RHBs, he also has just a 3.5 Hard-Soft% against them with a double digit SwStr% and 86.4 mph aEV overall. He hasn't been terrible. Charlie Blackmon, Joey Votto, Mike Trout and Jose Altuve round out the top five. Blackmon's team has the top implied run line, while Votto's is second. However, neither of the pitchers they're facing have allowed a lot of hard contact with Chris Flexen's 83.9 mph aEV the lowest on the board. Votto is a virtual lock for a couple of free passes though. Trout (vs Chris Smith 10.8% Barrels/BBE) and Altuve (vs Martin Perez RHBs .364 wOBA & 17 HRs) are in more ideal spots. Top projected values include Billy Hamilton (3.88 Pt/$/K), who may be in a better position to take advantage of Flexen's control issues, and Eduardo Nunez (3.82 Pt/$/K) on FanDuel. Nunez faces Brett Anderson, who hasn't pitched in the majors in months. Matt Carpenter (2.35 Pt/$/K) is potentially a top DraftKings value against Matt Garza (LHBs .362 wOBA, 37.3 GB%, 36.9 Hard% this year).
Coors bats have five of top six overall point projections via RotoGrinders Player Projections tonight
Coors bats dominate five of the top six spots according to the RotoGrinders Player Projections tonight, though three of those bats reside in the lineup with a nearly one and a half lower implied run total. Joey Votto is the top overall projected bat joined by teammates Adam Duvall and Billy Hamilton. Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado own two of the top four spots against Luis Castillo (30.4 K%, 17.4 BB% through two starts). Mookie Betts is the lone non-Coors bat to break through against Martin Perez in Texas. Value hunters could look towards LH Texas bats, Shin-Soo Choo and Nomar Mazara, both projected for eight points and 2.3 Pt/$/K on DraftKings. RH Boston bats Chris Young and Sam Travis join Kyle Seager (vs Ian Kennedy) as the only bats projecting above 3.9 Pt/$/K on FanDuel tonight.
Inexpensive leadoff options could be popular with Kershaw, Bumgarner on the mound
With Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner on the mound, players are going to be looking for inexpensive bats. Luckily, several of those exist at the top of lineups tonight, and they are likely to be among the most popular hitters tonight. Trey Mancini and Aaron Hill are projected to be in around one quarter of all lineups tonight with Billy Hamilton another leadoff hitter projected to be as popular. Paying up for someone like Freddie Freeman might actually be contrarian (expected to be owned 10% or less on either site tonight). In that case, a pivot off the top arms like Kershaw and Bumgarner to Dallas Keuchel could also play off. Keuchel doesn't miss as many bats and the Angels have a reputation for making contact, but they've actually struck out in 21.9% of PAs this year (21.3% vs LHP) and Keuchel has a 10.4 SwStr%, while absolutely dominating at the point of contact (73.1 GB%, -18.1 Hard-Soft%) so far this season. His projected ownership (which Premium subscribers can find our Projected Ownership page) is just 5% on FanDuel.
