Brandon Dixon Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Miguel Cabrera (knee) scratched Saturday; Brandon Dixon replaces

Cabrera has been scratched from the Detroit Tigers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the Chicago White Sox due to knee soreness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Brandon Dixon, who will now play left field and slot into the second spot in the order, which bumps Jeimer Candelario up to fourth and slides Harold Castro and Christin Stewart down to third and fifth, respectively. However, the remainder of the Tigers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Ivan Nova at home this evening.

Cheap Stack Against Overrated Pitcher

While Martin Perez had a great start to the season, his performances over the past two months have come crashing down to earth with multiple walks, multiple home runs, and a sub-20% K rate. I know the Tigers are a putrid offense, but they're not nearly as atrocious against left handed pitching. You can make a 5-man stack for as little as $16.7k on DraftKings that fills a catcher and infield spots, which will then allow you to pay up for stud SPs and three expensive one-off bats. On an 11-game slate with not all that many high totals this afternoon, the Tigers still have 4 runs implied, and should have quite low ownership for a viable route to go in large-field GPPs at their price.

Niko Goodrum (finger) scratched Wednesday; Brandon Dixon replaces

Goodrum has been scratched from the Detroit Tigers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Wednesday’s matchup against the Cleveland Indians due to an injured finger. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Brandon Dixon, who will now play first base and slot directly into Goodrum’s vacated seventh spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Tigers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Mike Clevinger on the road this evening.

Love The Home Run Upside

When picking on Homer Bailey, I like hitters with high hard-hit rates, and I like them to have a high fly ball rate. Brandon Dixon really fits that build for this matchup, and I don't think a lot of people will be playing him tonight. Dixon has a .200 ISO with a 50% hard-hit rate and a 45% fly ball rate against right-handed pitchers this season. Bailey has a 48.1% hard-hit rate against righties, and he's usually bailed out by generating ground balls. Dixon is one of my favorite value plays on this slate.

Cheap First Baseman Looking To Take Advantage of Opportunity

With Joey Votto sidelined for at least another day, the Reds are giving Brandon Dixon another start at first base. He'll hold the platoon-advantage against lefty Jason Vargas, who is allowing a .994 OPS to right-handed batters this season and has allowed 9 of his 12 home runs to that handedness. There's some industry buzz today about using a cheap Jason Vargas against this watered-down Reds offense and I completely get the argument, but Dixon is a great leverage play as the team's #2 hitter on Tuesday. I won't sugar-coat this play - Dixon hasn't been very impressive so far this season. In the majors, he's 9-for-51 (.176 average) with just two homers and 17 strikeouts. He did mash six home runs and batted .346 in Triple-A this season through 49 games, however, so the talent is there.

It's All About The Price Tag

Brandon Dixon has struggled since being called up, but he grades out so much better than his current numbers. He has a .103 ISO with a 32 wRC+ in 39 Major League at bats, but in AAA this season, he posted a .223 ISO with a .958 OPS and a 168 wRC+. Boyd has pitched well against righties this season, but his low strikeout rate makes him very hittable. I'm not expecting much tonight, but with limited value options on DraftKings and FantasyDraft, it's hard not to consider Dixon at $2,800.

Major league debut for fly ball pitcher in a tough park

Daniel Poncedeleon makes his major league debut in a difficult park against an offense that doesn’t offer much upside. The 26 year-old is not much of a prospect, but does have a 26.3 K% in 17 AAA starts this season. He also has a 12.3 BB% and has not otherwise been above a 21 K% since low A ball in 2014. Another thing to note is that the rise in his minor league strikeout rate has come with a sacrifice in ground balls. Always above 40% previously, he's dropped down a 29.8 GB% this season. Poncedeleon is cheap and could have the benefit of being unknown, but Vegas is siding heavily with the Reds (4.84 runs) in a dangerous park against a pitcher who is suddenly fly ball prone. The Reds have just three threats against RHP. They are Joey Votto (168 wRC+, .194 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Eugenio Suarez (127 wRC+, .223 ISO) and Jesse Winker (150 wRC+, .182 ISO), though without a ton of power. Brandon Dixon has a 57 wRC+ in 35 PAs so far, but had a 168 wRC+ with a 223 ISO at AAA this season and costs just $3K on DK or the minimum on FD.
