Brian Dozier Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

If Lefty Mashers Existed, They’d Look Like This Guy

I don’t want to pick on Cole Hamels, but the price point and platoon advantage for Brian Dozier make him a strong cash game play. On the season, Dozier has a .252 ISO and 135 wRC+ against southpaws, which is fantastic. Hamels can be prone to the long ball too, making this a potentially exploitable matchup.

Kyle Freeland has allowed 10 runs in eight innings since returning from the minors

The Nats and Rox are playing two today, so game two lineups are not yet confirmed, but it’s a good bet that the Nationals will be loading up with RHBs against Kyle Freeland in the night cap. Since being recalled from the minors, Freeland has allowed five runs in four innings in both his starts and has just a 9.5 K-BB% with a 21 HR/FB, 5.12 SIERA, 6.26 DRA, .368 xwOBA and 10.2% Barrels/BBE that can’t all be blamed on Coors. Over the last calendar year, RHBs have a .342 wOBA and xwOBA against him. The projected lineup for the Nationals features six RHBs. Among the first five, Brian Dozier (109 wRC+) is the only one below a 120 wRC+ vs LHP over the last calendar year. Anthony Rendon (144 wRC+, .288 ISO), Howie Kendrick (162 wRC+, .247 ISO) and Victor Robles (133 wRC+, .214 ISO) add quite a bit of power to the equation as well. The Nationals find themselves at 5.83 implied runs tonight, behind only the Dodgers on a 16 team board.

Nats have highest implied total on afternoon slate vs. Soto

Gregory Soto has been atrocious for the Tigers over 17 2/3 innings so far this year, posting an 8.66 ERA / 6.00 xFIP / 5.89 SIERA, with a 3.4% K-BB and 8.5% SwStr. Soto has shown walk issues at pretty much every level, and that sort of thing doesn’t just magically sort itself out in the Majors. Projection systems have Soto as a 5.50+ ERA pitcher going forward and we can continue to target him as long as he stays in the rotation. Soto has averaged just 3.5 innings per start, so Nats’ hitters will likely see a decent amount of plate appearances vs. the Detroit bullpen which has a league-worst 4.70 SIERA on the year. Howie Kendrick (.454 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Anthony Rendon (.445), Yan Gomes (.419), Juan Soto (.360), Victor Robles (.351), Trea Turner (.346), Brian Dozier (.341) and Adam Eaton (.326) are all great options vs. the Tigers today. Kendrick has been their hottest hitter over the past 14 days with a .448 xwOBA, followed by Juan Soto with a .422 mark. Eaton (projected to bat 2nd at $3.7k), Brian Dozier ($3.4k) and Yan Gomes ($2.8k) all look like great values. The Nationals currently have a healthy 6.31 implied line vs. Soto and the Tigers this afternoon.

Much Better In 2019

After struggling against left-handed pitching last season, Dozier has been really good against lefties this season. He draws a really good matchup tonight against Banuelos. Banuelos has a .418 wOBA with a .270 ISO against righties this season. He's also struggled with walking hitters and keeping the ball on the ground. Dozier has a .354 ISO with a .474 wOBA and a 40% hard-hit rate against left-handed hitters this season.

Solid Value Play

Although Lauer has been solid of late, I’ll side with some of the Washington bats that are better against lefties. Anthony Rendon obviously stands out with his elite splits, but he comes at a high price tag. On the value side, Brian Dozier has quietly looked a bit better of late and owns a .472 wOBA and 195 wRC+ against lefties this year. He’s one of the better value plays on the slate and has earned core status for that reason.

Nats Bats a Good Way to Get Contrarian on Early Slate

Steven Matz isn’t a bad pitcher by any means, but there are certainly spots to stack against him as he is prone to blow ups. He is much worse vs. RHB with a .329 xwOBA against since 2017, and posted a 1.66 HR/9 vs. RHB in 2018. The Nats have stacked their lineup with righties vs. Matz and a few have some particularly impressive numbers vs. LHP. Ryan Zimmerman (.439 xwOBA vs. LHP in 2018), Anthony Rendon (.423), Yan Gomes (.366) are all in play. Juan Soto (.351) has a tough matchup as a lefty but will be sandwiched in the middle of the order and is always a threat. Brian Dozier is coming off a down 2018, but owns a .363 wOBA and 129 wRC+ vs. LHP for his career and will bat 2nd in the Nats’ order. The Nats have just a 3.74 implied total today and figure to be low owned across the industry.

He's Not as Good as His Surface Numbers Look

Austin Gomber may have great surface stats with a 5-0 record and a 2.93 ERA, but his underlying numbers really don't support anything of that caliber long-term. His SIERA and xFIP are both more than two runs higher than that, and he's allowing a ton of hard contact, especially to RHBs. Don't be afraid to load up on the LAD RH power bats tonight. Machado and Turner are elite plays, while perhaps this is a spot for Brian Dozier to get things going at an affordable price tag. There's one-off and stack potential with these dangerous bats.

Affordable Exposure

A mid-priced hitter leading off in Coors with the platoon advantage? You can't ask for much more. Dozier's numbers against lefties this season (91 wRC+, .108 ISO) are more likely noise than anything of substance as the Dodgers second basemen's career numbers against southpaws are outstanding (132 wRC+, .232 ISO). The Dodgers have the highest implied run total of the slate (5.4) and Dozier offers a way to get affordable exposure to the most explosive offense of the slate.

Ready to Break Out Against Lefties?

His numbers against lefties have been extremely underwhelming this year compared to his career averages, but I'll bank on some improvement at Coors Field. His price tag is much more affordable than some of the other big bats for the Dodgers, and he could be looking at five at-bats with his spot at the top of the order in a road game where the Dodgers are guaranteed to hit nine times even if they are leading. While his profile against LHP lacks punch this year, there are some positive signs, namely his 14.5% walk rate. That suggests the batting eye is still there, and some of his poor results can be attributed to bad luck. I expect regression from Freeland on the mound, and I hope Dozier can start making that happen.

Better pitcher, likely similar result against a powerhouse lineup

The Dodgers will face off with a better pitcher in Texas tonight, but should still have the advantage in this environment against Mike Minor (RHBs .316 wOBA, but .358 xwOBA with a 38.9 Hard% and 32.7 GB% this season). Emphasis on the first six batters in the order for the Dodgers. Aside from Brian Dozier's (102 wRC+, .118 ISO) shocking lack of power against southpaws this year, they all are above a .175 ISO vs LHP this season. Justin Turner (193 wRC+, .247 ISO) is the top bat. Matt Kemp (132 wRC+, .250 ISO) may be the value play here. The Dodgers had the top run line last night, but drop a full run to third tonight (5.49).
