Brock Holt Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Clay Buchholz has allowed the highest rate of Barrels/BBE on the board (12.2%)
Clay Buchholz has an 8.7 SwStr% that suggests a few more strikeouts (1.4 K/SwStr), but in either case, he’s been hit fairly hard (12.2% Barrels/BBE is worst on the board). His .365 xwOBA is three points below Drew Smyly for the worst mark on the board as well with an ERA (5.31) and estimators all above five. He’s catching his old team at a good time. The Red Sox were shut down in Toronto last night and have just a team 41 wRC+ with a 10.7 HR/FB over the last seven days, but a 111 wRC+ and 11.6 K-BB% vs RHP this year. The Red Sox (5.67) are the lowest of four teams above 5.5 implied runs tonight. Potential backers may consider that recent frustrations could cause lower ownership rates tonight, but it’s another strong spot. Batters from either side of the plate are above a .330 wOBA and .350 xwOBA against Buchholz this year. The Sox will rest, arguably, their best bat against RHP tonight (Rafael Devers), though that will also move a very affordable Brock Holt (125 wRC+, .131 ISO, .338 xwOBA vs RHP) into the second spot, making a stack with Mookie Betts (142 wRC+, .256 ISO), Xander Bogaerts (148 wRC+, .252 ISO) and J.D. Martinez (106 wRC+, .190 ISO) more affordable for those betting on some positive regression.
Red Sox have a ridiculous 7.58 implied total vs. Orioles’ Eshelman
Tom Eshelman has seemingly fared better than expected over his 10 2/3 MLB innings thus far, posting a 5.06 ERA / 4.50 xFIP / 4.92 SIERA with a 11.4% K-BB. His Statcast numbers are a bit uglier, charging him with a .367 xwOBA, 11.4% barrel rate and 90.6 MPH aEV. Eshelman has been a pretty mediocre pitcher at each MiLB stop in his career and projects as a roughly 5.50+ ERA guy by most projection systems. After Eshelman is chased from the game, Red Sox hitters will face an Orioles’ bullpen that has a 4th worst 4.57 SIERA on the year. Mookie Betts (.413 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Rafael Devers (.389), JD Martinez (.386), Xander Bogaerts (.364), Brock Holt (.358), Jackie Bradley Jr. (.344), Andrew Benintendi (.320) and Michael Chavis (.311) are all great options tonight. Holt has been their hottest hitter since the All-Star break with a .470 xwOBA, followed by Betts at .403 and Devers at .390. Bradley Jr. is the only batter under $4k on Draftkings at $3.7k; he has a 115 wRC+ since June as he’s rebounded nicely following a very slow start to the year. Betts, Devers and Bogaerts will bat 1-2-3 and will all carry $5k + price tags on Draftkings, but could likely be well worth it given the matchup. J.D. Martinez is a nice value batting 4th at just $4.7k.
Red Sox have highest non-Coors Total on the board vs. Orioles’ Ortiz
The Red Sox will have a dream matchup tonight facing off with Luis Ortiz in Baltimore. Ortiz had a 7.01 ERA, 5.60 xFIP and 7.4 K-BB% over 53 innings in AAA this year. He projects as a 6+ ERA pitcher by most projection systems and should really struggle to get outs. Red Sox hitters project to get many of their plate appearances versus the Baltimore bullpen, which has largely struggled this year with a 6th worst 4.89 xFIP and 2nd worst 1.74 HR/9. JD Martinez (.416 xwOBA vs. RHP on the year), Rafael Devers (.399), Xander Bogaerts (.359), Andrew Benintendi (.349), Jackie Bradley Jr. (.334) and Michael Chavis (.326) are all good options in the Boston lineup tonight. JD Martinez has been their hottest bat over the past 14 days with a .441 xwOBA, followed by Xander Bogaerts with a .413 mark. Michael Chavis will leadoff tonight for the Sox but has been extremely cold of late with a .180 xwOBA over the last 14 days. Brock Holt is a nice value, batting 6th at just $3.8k on Draftkings with a .351 xwOBA over the past 14 days. The Red Sox have a gaudy 6.30 implied total tonight vs. Ortiz and the Orioles.
Power Upside Stack
The Red Sox match up nicely against Jakob Junis, a pitcher who has issues with walks and home runs. The Red Sox have plenty of hitters who are patient and can smack home runs. Seven regulars in the Boston lineup have walk rates of 10%+ this season, and there's tons of power upside. Betts, Martinez, and Bogaerts all have wOBA marks of .375+ against RHP since the start of last season, and you can perhaps even get a value bat like Brock Holt as an affordable piece of a GPP stack. There's a lot of upside here.
B-squad may still put up some runs in this park
After hanging 19 on the O's this afternoon, the Red Sox are going with the B-Squad in the nightcap. They are currently implied for 5.47 runs and while that total may drop, it's still a significantly positive run environment and they are facing a pitcher who has allowed a .406 wOBA to LHBs so far and a .346 wOBA to RHBs. They may still score some runs and now Jackie Bradley Jr. (100 wRC+, .184 ISO vs RHP this year), Brock Holt (104 wRC+, .150 ISO) and Steve Pearce (122 wRC+, .207 ISO) are affordable top of the lineup bats.
Absent key bats, still the top projected offense outside Coors
As they generally are at home, against all expect the best pitchers, the Red Sox are one of the top projected offenses on the board (5.56), behind just two teams at Coors. Ryan Borucki hasn't been bad for the Blue Jays, but has an 80 LOB% without allowing a HR along with a 12.3 K-BB% in a few starts. He had just a 9.5 K-BB% in 13 AAA starts this season. Though the Red Sox have improved against LHP, they are missing two top half of the lineup bats in Benintendi and Pearce tonight. While the former is left-handed, he's being replaced by Brock Holt in the second spot, who has a .268 xwOBA and .038 ISO vs LHP over the last calendar year. Mookie Betts (187 wRC+, .304 ISO) and J.D. Martinez (161 wRC+, .315 ISO) are obvious top bats at home against the lefty. Xander Bogaerts (107 wRC+, .139 ISO) joins those two above a 185 wRC+ over the last week.
Bad But Valuable
Things I don't like about Brock Holt: 1) He's terrible. 2) He's really bad. Things I like about Brock Holt: 1) He's cheap. 2) He has SS eligibility on DK. 3) He's on the team with the highest implied run total of the slate. As you can tell, I certainly don't think fondly of Brock Holt but I am willing to overlook that due to the context of the slate where cheap hitters are extremely valuable. Another important note is that Holt could find himself hitting top five in the Red Sox lineup if Bogaerts is unable to go Saturday night.
Red Sox remain above five implied runs at home now without J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts tonight
As has been the most times this season, the Red Sox have one of the highest Vegas run lines on the board (5.19) at home. Dylan Covey has increased his K% by more than 50% and his SwStr% nearly two full points from a rookie season that he finished with a 2.3 K-BB%. He still has a double digit walk rate through four starts in 2018 though. While the Red Sox haven't missed a beat without Mookie Betts, they'll have to continue on tonight without J.D. Martinez. While that takes an elite bat out of play, it also makes Boston stacks more affordable. Andrew Benintendi (132 wRC+, .207 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) now carries an enormous price tag himself, but is one of the top bats on the board tonight. Batters from either side of the plate still have a wOBA and xwOBA above .350 since last season, though that's been improved too in just 22 innings this year. Mitch Moreland (118 wRC+, .408 xwOBA, .250 ISO) and Eduardo Nunez (115 wRC+, .159 ISO) are the remaining above average hitters against RHP. Xander Bogearts (92 wRC+, .178 ISO) is a top SS play. Brock Holt (77 wRC+, .102 ISO) offers affordable exposure to the top of this lineup with a 157 wRC+ over the last week.
Dustin Pedroia scratched Saturday; Brock Holt replaces and will bat eighth
Pedroia has officially been scratched from the Boston Red Sox lineup for today's game against the Houston Astros due to a manager's decision and expected field conditions at Fenway Park with rain in the forecast. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Brock Holt, who will take over the second base duties and bat eighth. This lineup change does shake up the Boston lineup quite a bit, as everyone except for Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. will slide up one spot in the batting order to compensate for Pedroia's sudden unavailability. Be sure to check out the RotoGrinders lineups page for further clarification, if needed.
Mike Clevinger has slate leading 27.1 K%, 13.2 SwStr% & has improved against RHBs this year
Mike Clevinger has the top strikeout rate on the slate (27.1%) along with the top swinging strike rate (13.2%). While the Red Sox strike out less often than average (19.2% vs RHP), it's still often enough to keep the top strikeout arm on the board in play tonight. Last season, Clevinger struggled against same-handed batters (.412 wOBA with seven of his eight HRs allowed), but he's made great strides against them this season (.281 wOBA with four HRs) with a recent Fangraphs article crediting his location, specifically on breaking balls more often down and away, for the improvement. He's not entirely out of the woods though. He's walked batters from either side of the plate more than 11% of the time this season, while LHBs have a .345 wOBA with a 26.6 Hard-Soft% and 31.2 GB% against him. He lasted just three innings, allowing five runs with four walks against in Boston on July 31st. Rafael Devers has been a beast so far (179 wRC+, .375 ISO vs RHP). He has a 271 wRC+ over the last week with four HRs with early ownership projections currently placing him behind Manny Machado, Jake Lamb and Kyle Seager on either site at Third Base tonight. Eduardo Nunez (117 wRC+) is the only RHB in the confirmed lineup with a wRC+ above 100 against RHP this year though with none above a .190 ISO. Mookie Betts (100 wRC+, .188 ISO, 35.5 Hard% vs RHP) has been just average. Clevinger gets another small bump with Mitch Moreland being replaced by Broch Holt (-17 wRC+ last seven days, 14.9 Hard% vs RHP this year) since the original lineup came out.
