Chiefs sign C.J. Spiller
The Chiefs signed veteran running back C.J. Spiller as insurance policy ahead of a wild card matchup vs the Titans this weekend. With both Charcandrick West ( Illness) and Akeem Hunt ( Ankle) both on the injury report, the team signed Spiller to add depth in case of an emergency. Kareem Hunt will continue to work as the Chiefs' featured back for their Wild Card matchup against the Titans
C.J. Spiller released by Chiefs, Charcandrick West expected to play Week 8
Spiller re-signed with Kansas City for last Thursday's game because Charcandrick West was in the concussion protocol. They released him again today as West is expected to be cleared to play in Week 8 against the Broncos. He'll remain in a limited role behind workhorse Kareem Hunt and won't have much fantasy appeal. Hunt will battle the Broncos in Week 8, whose defense is allowing the second-fewest PPR points to RBs this season.
Charcandrick West ruled out for Week 7; Albert Wilson questionable
Also ruled out: C Mitch Morse and RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. West wasn't able to clear the concussion protocol in time for their Thursday night matchup with the Raiders. Kansas City signed C.J. Spiller earlier this week, he could take over some of West's passing-down duties. With Chris Conley out, Wilson should see an uptick in targets going forward. If he suits up Thursday, he'll have a decent matchup with T.J. Carrie in the slot. Carrie has posted the third-worst cover snaps per reception rate (6.9) and allowed a fantasy-friendly 83% catch rate, but he has earned PFF's 17th-best cover grade.
Chiefs re-signed C.J. Spiller
With Charcandrick West in the concussion protocol on a short week, the Chiefs decided to bring Spiller back for depth at running back. Kanas City takes on Oakland this Thursday night and this roster move indicates West isn't expected to be ready for that game. According to beat writer Terez A. Paylor, it's possible Spiller takes over West's third-down role against the Raiders, who ranked dead last in receiving RB DVOA heading into Week 6 - and then promptly allowed Melvin Gordon to pile up nine catches and a score. Kareem Hunt will remain the workhorse and he'll be active in the passing game as well. Spiller isn't available on the Monday-Thursday slates on DraftKings or FanDuel and he'll be released if West clears the concussion protocol.
Chiefs released C.J. Spiller Thursday
Spiller has been cut again by the Chiefs, but he'll be back tomorrow. As a veteran, his contract would become guaranteed if he were on the roster for their season opener. By releasing him and re-signing him again tomorrow, for the third time in a week, it would release them of that financial obligation. Kareem Hunt will be the featured back Thursday night against the Patriots and Charcandrick West figures to pick up some touches as well.
Jets waive C.J. Spiller
Spiller only ended up touching the ball four times with the Jets, three of those coming last night. New York's season is done and they'll want the roster spot for some younger talent as the rebuilding process begins in the Bryce Petty era. Matt Forte and Bilal Powell will share running back duties for the remainder of the season. It would make sense for the Jets to ease up on Forte's workload in an effort to protect his body for next season. Forte has two years left on his deal.
C.J. Spiller active for Jets
Spiller will be third string behind Forte and Powell. He might return some kicks today, but still won't have any fantasy value today.
Jets expected to sign C.J. Spiller, release Knile Davis
Poor Knile Davis, he wasn't even with the Jets for a full day before they released him. Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Jets are finalizing a deal with C.J. Spiller, so they won't have room on the roster for Davis. New York will probably use Spiller in some passing down situations, but both Matt Forte and Bilal Powell are capable receivers. He won't have fantasy value until proven otherwise.
C.J. Prosise active for Seahawks, C.J. Spiller scratched
Beat writer Gregg Bell believes Spiller's scratch indicates Prosise may cut into Christine Michael's early down work. Even so, Prosise's volume will be minor and he isn't a fantasy play against the Cardinals.
Seahawks sign C.J. Spiller to provide backfield depth
The Seahawks have signed C.J. Spiller in the wake of Thomas Rawls' injury (C.J. Prosise also sat last week, but returned to practice today). Christine Michael is still going to head the backfield, but Spiller will have a chance to compete for passing down/complementary work with Prosise and Alex Collins. It's been awhile since Spiller has been a strong DFS play, and those days aren't likely to come to an end in the near future.
