Carlos Gonzalez Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Conditions and struggling pitching (Jon Lester 6.03 FIP last 30 days) could turn Wrigley into Coors tonight

While Fenway is the most positive run environment on the board tonight with no consideration of outside factors, Wrigley may be playing the part of Coors tonight with winds blowing out to RF at around 15 mph. The bump given to power and overall run scoring by Weather Edge (premium tool) is pretty tremendous tonight.

Julio Teheran is down to a 14.7 K% over the last month, though he’s allowed just one HR over his last nine starts. While Teheran has seemingly solved his issue with LHBs over the last calendar year (.297 wOBA) that may be an illusion as xwOBA credits them with a 43 point bump over that period, which makes sense with a 38.8 Hard% and 34.8 GB%. Teheran’s 11.5 BB% does not inspire confidence either. The obvious plays here are Kyle Schwarber (106 wRC+, .230 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Anthony Rizzo (158 wRC+, .255 ISO) with Jason Heyward (100 wRC+, .148 ISO) and Carlos Gonzalez (92 wRC+, .167 ISO) showing league average tendencies that will receive a weather boost tonight. The latter duo each cost $2.5K or less on FanDuel.

For the home team, Jon Lester doesn’t issue free passes (5.5%) and still strikes out batters at a league average rate (22.7%), but that may be an illusion (8.3 SwSt%). His 4.13 ERA has nearly caught up with estimators, none of which are lower, due to a 6.44 ERA and 6.03 FIP over the last month. An 88.9 mph aEV and 10.3% Barrels/BBE make matters even worse. His .349 xwOBA is fourth worst on the board tonight and he’ll have to contend with an Atlanta offense with a 108 wRC+, 20.8 K% and 17 HR/FB vs LHP this year. The good news is that the wind is blowing out to right field instead of left. The bad is that LHBs (.406 wOBA, .381 xwOBA) have hit him even harder than RHBs (.331 wOBA, .334 xwOBA) over the last 12 months. Freddie Freeman (119 wRC+, .206 ISO) has hit same-handed pitching well over that span and tops the team with a 61.1 Hard% over the last week (10 PA min.). A lineup that leans predominantly right-handed here is certainly useful too with both offense implied for well over five runs tonight.

Highest Team Total on the Board

It’s finally reached 70+ degrees in Denver, and we finally have some weather that is conducive for runs along with the generally favorable conditions that Coors Field offers. The Cubs have an implied team total of well over six tonight, and they are seemingly a lock for at least some production against Peter Lambert. While Lambert looked good in his debut against these same Cubs a week ago, I’ll give the edge to the opposing offense when they are facing a young pitcher for the second time in six days. Lambert doesn’t have a great minor league profile, though much of that is pitching in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. However, it’s not like Coors Field is any less hitter-friendly. This Cubs lineup is dangerous from top to bottom, and there really isn’t a breather when you are facing them. Power bats like Schwarber, Rizzo, Bryant, and Baez are obviously great options at Coors. The only problem lies in the salary here. Almost every Chicago bat is ridiculously priced on DK, and for that reason I’ve almost been forced to tag the sub-$4,000 Carlos Gonzalez as a core play over there. Hey, it’s revenge after all! I’m not convinced that he has much left in the tank, but I can’t tag three $5,000+ bats on DK as core plays, so Gonzalez provides some Coors exposure at a reasonable price tag. On FanDuel, I’ll side with the power of Kyle Schwarber as the core option at a manageable salary tag. He is hitting .343 with a .410 on base percentage this month and seems comfortable in the leadoff spot.

Value Bats Available in Cleveland’s Lineup

The Indians will face Yefry Ramirez this afternoon, who owned an ugly 5.92 ERA / 5.25 xFIP in 2018 with an 8.8% BB rate and 45.2% FB rate. The Indians are projected for the 2nd highest total of the day with a 5.93 implied total vs. Ramirez, yet have a number of bats who feel very underpriced. Jason Kipnis will bat 2nd at just $4k on Draftkings; he has a .365 xwOBA vs. RHP so far this year. Carlos Santana will bat 3rd at just $4.2k and is the owner of a 103 wRC+ and .176 ISO vs. RHP since 2018. Carlos Gonzalez bats 4th at just $3.5k and has a 99 wRC+ and .183 ISO vs. RHP since 2018. Jose Ramirez follows him and is just $4.1k due to a rough 2019 thus far; however he is still the owner of a 135 wRC+ and .267 ISO vs. RHP since 2018 with 46 steals over that timeframe. Jake Bauers bats 6th at just $3.7k with a 97 wRC+ and .168 ISO vs. RHP since 2018. Francisco Lindor isn’t a “value” at $5k but is certainly in play in a great matchup where he’ll leadoff and has a 115 wRC+ and .234 ISO vs. RHP since 2018.

Cleveland will face Dylan Bundy at home tonight in what looks to be a great matchup. Bundy has had a rough year so far with a 5.31 ERA / 5.14 xFIP and an ugly 47.8% FB rate. He’s also allowing a career high .336 xwOBA, and his average fastball velocity dipped under 90MPH in his last start (91.6 MPH average in 2018). Bundy has very wide platoon splits (.294 xwOBA allowed vs. RHB, .359 xwOBA allowed vs. LHB since 2018) and projects to face seven lefties in Cleveland’s order tonight. Francisco Lindor (.370 xwOBA since 2018 vs. RHP), Jose Ramirez (.368), Leonys Martin (.365), Carlos Santana (.343), Jason Kipnis (.340) and Jake Bauers (.314) are all good left-handed options in the Indians’ projected lineup. Carlos Gonzalez (.305) hasn’t hit RHP as well as he used to but projects to hit 4th and is just $3.3k on Draftkings. Jason Kipnis is another bargain, projected to hit 2nd at just $3.3k as well. Francisco Lindor has been the Indians’ hottest hitter with a .402 xwOBA over the past 10 days, Kipnis follows close behind with a .388 mark. The Indians have a 5.19 implied total Friday night.

LHPs .355 wOBA against LHBs is the worst on the board against batters from either side

As expected, outfield is the position most flush with exciting DFS options on Friday. Although incredibly expensive, discussion must start with Mookie Betts (212 wRC+, .368 ISO vs LHP) and J.D. Martinez (155 wRC+, .244 ISO) against J.A. Happ (RHBs .313 wOBA). Another interesting high priced spot is Christian Yelich (162 wRC+, .250 ISO vs LHP) against Tyler Anderson, who's .355 wOBA against LHBs this year is the highest split against either side for any pitcher today. Charlie Blackmon (122 wRC+, .235 ISO vs RHP) is in another strong spot against Jhoulys Chacin (LHBs .338 wOBA). Steve Pearce (158 wRC+, .255 ISO vs LHP) is an OF eligible value play on DK. Ryan Braun (125 wRC+, .277 ISO vs LHP) costs $3.3K on FanDuel, where Carlos Gonzalez (104 wRC+, .201 ISO) costs $2.3K.

Yet another matchup where LHBs should shine

At 6.07 implied runs, no other offense even comes close to the Rockies tonight. Only two more are even above five runs. Joe Ross makes his third start of the season and is trailed by one of the worst bullpens in baseball in the second half of the season. Ross has a nearly 100 point career split (LHBs .362 wOBA, RHBs .271 wOBA), which emphasizes LHBs for the Rockies yet again this week. Charlie Blackmon (117 wRC+, .220 ISO) and David Dahl (138 wRC+, .302 ISO) have been the top bats against RHP this year. Nolan Arenado (96 wRC+, .193 ISO), Trevor Story (108 wRC+, .237 ISO) and Carlos Gonzalez (104 wRC+, .197 ISO) all project fairly well in this environment as well.

Another RHP who struggles against LHBs in a massively positive run environment

Despite a slight drop in their 5.83 implied run total over the course of the afternoon, the Rockies still tower above all other offenses on a slate where only four teams are even above 4.5 runs tonight. As pitcher with confusing BABIP struggles, Coors might not be the right fit for Nick Pivetta, who, like both previous Philadelphia pitchers in this series, has struggled with LHBs this season (.336 wOBA). The Rockies have been on a scoring spree so far this week, but the fact remains, that Charlie Blackmon (119 wRC+, .221 ISO) and David Dahl (123 wRC+, .267 ISO) have been the only well above average batters against RHP in this lineup. The environment makes Nolan Arenado (95 wRC+, .191 ISO), Trevor Story (101 wRC+, .222 ISO) and Carlos Gonzalez (102 wRC+, .194 ISO) all playable, but not necessarily the best values on the board.

Thrown for a Curve

THE BAT currently has three teams projected for more than five runs on Monday's main slate: New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies come in with the highest projected team total at 5.98 runs as they host Zack Godley. Godley is a better pitcher than his 4.51 ERA would indicate - he owns a 4.01 SIERA - but Coors is known to destroy even average pitchers. Perhaps the biggest problem for Godley pitching in Coors is his curveball usage. The curveball is Godley's most used pitch this season (40.8%) and pitches that rely on vertical movement typically lose effectiveness in the Denver altitude.

The unkindest of park shifts

The Rockies are just one of two teams above five implied runs and are highest on the board at 5.52 at home against Dereck Rodriguez. He's been good with the advantage of pitching many games in San Francisco. He gets the unkindest of park shifts tonight and while xwOBA agrees with his sub-.300 wOBA against RHBs, it does bring him up to .323 against LHBs with a 45 Hard%. That's still only league average, but enough to pounce on at Coors with the likes of Charlie Blackmon (113 wRC+, .225 ISO vs RHP), Carlos Gonzalez (113 wRC+, .208 ISO) and David Dahl (122 wRC+, .248 ISO). Few probably realize that Trevor Story (107 wRC+, .221 ISO) has been the better hitter than Nolan Arenado (95 wRC+, .191 ISO) vs RHP this year.

Highest Implied Run Total

Dereck Rodriguez is a converted fielder whose ERA (2.47) paints him in a much more favorable light than his SIERA (4.31). The Giants righty is hardly generating any soft contact this season (13.6%) which is unlikely to translate well in Coors. The Rockies have the highest implied run total of the slate (5.6) and make for one of the strongest stacks of the night. Somewhat surprisingly the Rockies salaries aren't as prohibitive as they typically are in a good home matchup. You're unlikely to be able to be able to pitch Verlander alongside your Rockies stack but you don't have to sacrifice much else to roster one of Tuesday night's top stack.
