Chad Kuhl Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Pirates-Nationals postponed due to inclement weather Friday.
Pirates-Nationals postponed due to inclement weather Friday.
D'Backs may be able to take advantage of Chad Kuhl's platoon issues.
Chad Kuhl has significant issues with LHBs (.365 wOBA/xwOBA) with a 40.4 Hard% and 34.6 GB% since last season. The Diamondbacks have just a 4.06 implied run line against him in Pittsburgh tonight, as they generally struggle against RHP (80 wRC+, 25.3 K%), but have been improving recently and have three LHBs in the top half of the order who are all above average hitters against RHP. All three exceed a 160 wRC+ over the last week. Jon Jay (107 wRC+, .106 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) has little power in the leadoff spot. David Peralta (121 wRC+, .214 ISO) and Daniel Descalso (120 wRC+, .201 ISO) have significantly more. Paul Goldschmidt (111 wRC+, .207 ISO) may still be the top overall bat in the lineup (244 wRC+, 57.1 Hard% last seven days).
Path of Least Resistance at SP2
Last night was a real letdown when they postponed the game in Pittsburgh. Sometimes the weather turns and there’s nothing we can do about it. Kuhl was scheduled to pitch last night, but will take the mound tonight instead. He’s been more than serviceable this season, posting a 4.22 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22%. He’s pitching at home in a good ballpark and he’s a slight favorite against the Diamondbacks, whose projected lineup has a 29% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.
Start of Wednesday's MIL-PIT game will be delayed due to rain
The start of the matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night will be delayed due to rain. There's yet to be any confirmation of an official start time, and the Pirates have not committed to a specific timeline for providing further updates. The confirmed late start is better news for the prospects of starting pitchers like Chad Kuhl and Brent Suter not being pulled from their starts early because of a mid-game delay, and as Kevin Roth has detailed in the latest update to his MLB weather forecast, the game should still be able to be played if the teams are patient enough to wait through this initial weather stoppage.
Best Pitcher on the Board
Kuhl doesn’t get much credit in DFS, but he’s had a respectable season for the Pirates. In his 14 starts, he has a 4.22 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22%. While he has a high fly-ball rate, that’s not exactly a negative in this big ballpark. He draws a decent matchup against the Brewers, who have five batters in their projected lineup with a strikeout rate of at least 22% against right-handed pitching. Kuhl is far from a core target, but he’s viable as an SP2 if you are building multiple tournament lineups.
Not A Lot Of Options
We know the story with Chad Kuhl by now: he's really good against righties but struggles with lefties. We don't have a lot of value options on this 7-game main slate, and that's why I'm looking at Kuhl. You HAVE to look at the Brewers lineup when it comes out, but if Shaw is still out with the wrist injury, we should have five righties and the pitcher's spot. Yelich is a good hitter, but not too much of a home run threat with his massive ground ball rate. Thames is the one guy I really worry about, and I hope this ballpark helps Kuhl out. There is a favorable pitcher's ump in this game, which helps both of these cheap pitchers. Kuhl has enough strikeout upside to make up for a couple of runs in this spot.
Situational Play
Kuhl is strictly a situational play worth a long shot in GPPs if you're making multiple lineups. This is a tough travel spot for the Cubs as they travel to Pittsburgh to play a 1:35 PM EST game versus the Pirates after finishing up with their Sunday night baseball game around 11:45 PM EST. Kuhl has been largely mediocre for the Pirates so far this year (4.20 ERA, 4.09 SIERA, 22.5K%) but will likely get a bit of a watered down Cubs lineup (perhaps we see Chris Gimenez in for Willson Contreras, which is a massive downgrade offensively) in an otherwise tough matchup. Kuhl will also have the benefit of home-field advantage with this game taking place at pitcher friendly PNC Park.

First four in the Cincinnati order line up left-handed against Chad Kuhl (LHBs .380 wOBA since 2017)
The Cincinnati Reds have a fairly high 4.63 Vegas run line at home against a pitcher, Chad Kuhl, who has some well-established issues with left-handed batters (.380 wOBA, 39.6 Hard%, 34.9 GB% since last season). That's not good news in one of the most power friendly parks in the league. Joey Votto (168 wRC+, .436 xwOBA, .218 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Scooter Gennett (147 wRC+, .261 ISO) are strong candidates to do some damage, while Jesse Winker (134 wRC+, .167 ISO) and Tucker Barnhart (98 wRC+, .139 ISO) offer low cost value out of the top two spots.
Chad Kuhl has a .398 overall xwOBA this year and .382 wOBA against LHBs since last year
The Padres have a 26.9 K% against RHP that's the second worst split on the board, but the actual lineup tonight drops to 23.9% since the start of last season. Chad Kuhl has league average peripherals, but significant split issues and .398 xwOBA (89.6 mph aEV) that's second worst on the board, though he has been around a league average arm at home since last season (4.55 xFIP, .338 xwOBA). He can be rostered due to the caliber of the opposition, but he's not a pitcher players should feel confident in. In fact, his .382 wOBA (.368 xwOBA, 39.9 Hard%) against LHBs since last season suggests a few San Diego bats may be worth their price tags below $4K tonight. Eric Hosmer (157 wRC+, .215 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Travis Jankowski (150 wRC+, .133 ISO) in the leadoff spot, Franchy Cordero (118 wRC+, .212 ISO) and Raffy Lopez (135 wRC+, .288 ISO) are all candidates to do some damage at potentially low ownership rates.
