Cheslor Cuthbert Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

With Odorizzi scratched, there is value and upside in Royals’ lineup vs. Smeltzer

Jake Odorizzi has been scratched and replaced with lefty Devin Smeltzer, creating some intriguing plays in the Royals’ lineup this afternoon. Smelter isn’t a terrible pitcher; he had 3.45 ERA / 4.87 xFIP in AAA this year and projects as a roughly 4.5 ERA guy by most projection systems in the Majors. Royals bats are priced down a bit here and they have some solid pop vs. LHP: Hunter Dozier (.415 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Cheslor Cuthbert (.364), Jorge Soler (.355), Whit Merrifield (.350), Lucas Duda (.314) and Alex Gordon (.312) are all solid options this afternoon. Royals’ right-handed bats are especially intriguing given the platoon advantage and massive park upgrade as Target Field is much friendlier to RHB than Kauffman. Jorge Soler has been on fire with a .478 xwOBA over the past 14 days and is just $4.1k on Draftkings. Cuthbert ($3.7k) and Gordon ($4k) are nice values on Draftkings as well, and you won’t have to break the bank for Merrifield ($4.5k) or Dozier ($4.4k) either. On Fanduel, Royals bats are affordable as well; all their hitters can be had for $3.6k or less. Royals hitters with also have the benefit of a hitter-friendly umpire in Jansen Visconti.

Royals bats are a nice contrarian play vs. struggling Kikuchi

Yusei Kikuchi’s season line isn’t completely terrible, as he has a 4.78 ERA, 4.89 xFIP and 4.93 SIERA with a 10% K-BB. However, over the last 30 days Kikuchi owns an ugly 7.71 ERA, 6.46 xFIP, and 6.00 SIERA with a 1.8% K-BB, 3.0 HR/9 and 42.1% hard contact rate. He’s also allowed a horrendous .417 xwOBA over the past 30 days. The Royals have some decent options tonight that can be had at affordable prices: Whit Merrifield (134 wRC+ vs. LHP since 2018), Jorge Bonifacio (125 wRC+), Jorge Soler (124 wRC+), Nicky Lopez (108 wRC+, 33 PA), Cheslor Cuthbert (102 wRC+) and Adalberto Mondesi (99 wRC+) are all solid options tonight. Jorge Soler has been the Royals’ hottest hitter over the past 14 days with a .443 xwOBA. Billy Hamilton (47 wRC+) is always a dart-throw GPP option given that he’s always a threat for a steal or two and comes at cheap prices across the industry. The Royals are an intriguing tournament stack given that they will likely see low-ownership and have decent upside without breaking the bank. They currently have a 4.25 implied line for tonight’s matchup.

Chris Tillman has a .455 xwOBA and has allowed at least four runs in five of six starts

When players see the Kansas City Royals with the second highest run line on the board (5.33), above even one of the teams playing at Coors tonight, the thought might be that there's some mistake. The mistake is that Chris Tillman is still starting major league games. He has a board worst .455 xwOBA and 5.5 SwStr%, while allowing at least four runs in all five starts against major league lineups this season (Detroit doesn't count). Batters from either side have raked above a .390 wOBA and xwOBA with a hard hit rate above 38% since last season. Mike Moustakas (130 wRC+, .286 ISO), Lucas Duda (128 wRC+, .279 ISO), Salvador Perez (98 wRC+, .198 ISO) and Whit Merrifield (102 wRC+, .147 ISO) are the average or better hitters against RHP over the last calendar year. All have at least a 110 wRC+ and 31 Hard% over the last week too. Alcides Escobar (60 wRC+) and Cheslor Cuthbert (56 wRC+) are probably the only Royals worth excluding here.

Eduardo Rodriguez has the top swinging strike rate (14.3%) and third best xwOBA (.271) on the board

Eduardo Rodriguez has gone at least six innings in three straight starts with a 12+ SwStr% in all four. He gets the Royals (92 wRC+ vs LHP) at home for around $7.5K on either site. I don’t understand the low cost. As expected, Ned Yost will ignore a slight reverse split (RHBs .308 wOBA since last season, LHBs .320) and drop his left-handed bats in the order in favor of the dangerous Cheslor Cuthbert (93 wRC+, .147 ISO vs LHP since 2017) batting fifth. Rodriguez has a 28.8 K% at home since last season and his 14.3 SwStr% overall in 2018 is highest on the board tonight. His .271 xwOBA is third best. He has just as much upside with potentially less risk than higher priced arms tonight. It makes so much sense to drop down and roster him tonight. Kevin does have some weather concerns in this game, though it does not appear to be a delay situation once they start. Players will want to make sure that's still the case later.

Royals have three above average hitters against LHP (120+ wRC+) at $3.1K or less on FanDuel

Sean Manaea last threw 61 pitches on August 29th, leaving the game with a back issue. He’s really begun to show an ability to miss bats (20.6 K%, 12.0 SwStr% this season) and while it would be nice consider him today in a decent spot in Kansas City (93 wRC+ at home, 97 wRC+ vs LHP), back issues are tricky. Can we even count on him for five healthy innings? The Royals lineup offers players a couple of interesting options at the top of the order. Whit Merrifield (126 wRC+ vs LHP) costs just $2.9K on FanDuel out of the leadoff spot at a middle infield position. RHBs do have a .343 wOBA and 35.4 Hard% against Manaea. Cheslor Cuthbert (127 wRC+ vs LHP this season) costs less than $3K on either site. Kendrys Morales (124 wRC+, .210 ISO vs LHP this season) costs just above $3K on FanDuel.

Salvador Perez scratched Monday, Cuthbert up a spot

Perez does have a .233 ISO vs LHP, but there are reasonable pivots behind the plate, starting with Evan Gattis facing a lefty for much less on FanDuel or Sandy Leon facing Miley in Boston on DraftKings at a similar price point. For the Royals, all of the attractive bats are still at the top, but Cheslor Cuthbert (128 wRC+, .368 wOBA, .160 ISO vs LHP), mentioned earlier, bumps up a spot. Drew Butera will replace Perez and bat ninth.

Ross Detwiler has a 5.30 xFIP and 5.5% K-BB% versus RHB

Ross Detwiler owns a 5.15 ERA on the season that is accompanied with a 4.97 SIERA and 29.8% hard hit rate allowed. His splits aren’t massive like a lot of other left-handed pitchers, but he does still fare worse against right-handed batters as we would expect. We should be able to get a lot of the Kansas City bats fairly low-owned tonight, as they are never an exciting offense to stack, and there are so many other options out there on this slate. If looking for a sneaky tournament stack, the Royals are the team to target. Whit Merrifield (130 wRC+, .370 wOBA vs LHP), Paulo Orlando (.156 ISO vs LHP), Salvador Perez (.233 ISO vs LHP), Cheslor Cuthbert (128 wRC+, .368 wOBA, .160 ISO vs LHP), and Kendrys Morales (125 wRC+, .362 wOBA, .214 ISO vs LHP) are the options to consider here.

Carlos Rodon has been consistent, but still struggles with RHBs (.344 wOBA, 17 HRs)

Carlos Rodon has pitched between 5.2 and seven innings in all but three starts (just once less than five) and has struck out between five and eight in 17 of 23 starts. That’s remarkable consistency, but not a ton of upside for a cost above $8K. He’s also topped out at six strikeouts over his last five starts and even that just once. He still struggles with RHBs (.344 wOBA with 17 HRs this season) and the Royals do top the order with several bats who hit LHP well. The interesting thing is that we can almost split them in half by site. Morales (126 wRC+, .207 ISO vs LHP this season) and Cain (159 wRC+, .232 ISO vs LHP since last season) should be looked at on Fanduel for less than $3.5K, while Orlando (118 wRC+, .165 ISO vs LHP this season) and Cuthbert (137 wRC+, .170 ISO vs LHP this season) cost $3K or less on DraftKings.

Cheslor Cuthbert batting second for Royals, NOT Christian Colon

It seems the Kansas City lineup was inadvertently posted incorrectly in the stadium today, but Christian Colon is NOT playing. Cheslor Cuthbert is batting second for the Royals tonight.

Royals have been disappointing, but have several strong bats vs LHP, including two with a 160+ wRC+

Daniel Norris has started just four games this season, striking out just three of 22 Mariners in his only start over the last month, but allowing just one run through five innings. He has not gone more than five innings in any of those starts with a 7.2 SwStr% that does not support his above average 23.5 K% and an 84.7 LOB% despite a .389 BABIP. The Royals are the worst road offense in baseball (15.9 K-BB%, 27.9 Hard%) and have an 18.4 K-BB% with just a 5.1 HR/FB over the last week, so it wouldn’t be a complete shock if he held his own in this outing. Four of the top five bats in the order tonight do hit LHP well, while we may be able to consider Lorenzo Cain (166 wRC+, .243 ISO) and Paulo Orlando (162 wRC+, .207 ISO) lefty mashers this season. Kendrys Morales (121 wRC+, .233 ISO vs LHP this season) has also done well from the right side of the plate. While Cheslor Cuthbert (129 wRC+, .167 ISO vs LHP this season) may have some value in the same price range on DK where all are below $4K, though he's the highest priced of the group on FD ($3.4K).
