Swerve To This GPP Stack

The Coors Field game will be chalky tonight for good reason, but don't sleep on the Braves in tournaments. They get an intriguing matchup here against Steven Matz, and the power/speed combination for the Braves helps give them plenty of upside here. Matz does not hold runners well, and that means guys like Acuna, Swanson, and others can show off their all around ability in this game. There's explosive potential here, making Atlanta one of the night's best GPP stacks. Matz has allowed a .326 wOBA to LHBs and a .321 wOBA to RHBs for his career, so you could even target Freeman in a L/L matchup as a contrarian play.

A lot Of Hard Contact

Colten Brewer is going to start, but likely won't go more than 85 pitches for the Red Sox tonight. He has a 4.41 xFIP with a 21% strikeout rate on the season. He also has a 44.9% hard hit rate. The Red Sox bullpen has been terrible this season and is a mix of lefties and righties. I like the Braves a lot and think the righties have just as much upside as the lefties in this matchup. Acuna, Swanson, Freeman, Ozuna, d'Arnaud, and Markakis all have an ISO over .200 against right-handed pitching this season.

Excellent Power Matchup

First off let me say that I am beyond saddened that we don't get to roster Ronald Acuna Jr in what would be a nut matchup for him. However, even without Acuna in the lineup the Braves still make for one of the top overall stacks of the night against Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez has allowed at least 4 ER in each of his three starts this season, good for a 9.69 ERA (5.30 SIERA) through 13 IP. Now, Sanchez is obviously not *THAT* bad, but he's still a premier pitcher to target due to his propensity to give up both HRs and stolen bases. Without Acuna the Braves don't have a ton of speed in their lineup but they do have guys that can hit for power, including Marcell Ozuna who I love as a one-off if you're not full out stacking the Braves.

Logan Webb has allowed a .379 xwOBA over the past 30 days

22 year old Logan Webb has had a bit of a rough time since being called up as he’s posted a 6.51 ERA over 27 and 2/3 innings. He does have a 4.01 xFIP and 4.61 SIERA and a not-terrible 10.9% K-BB that indicates the ERA is likely a bit inflated. Though he also has a .353 xwOBA allowed (and a .379 xwOBA over the past 30 days) so he isn’t fooling too many batters either. The Braves are missing a few of their best hitters but still have a solid 5.50 implied total and their lineup has some nice value plays as well. Freddie Freeman (.419 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Matt Joyce (.370), Nick Markakis (.370), Dansby Swanson (.340), Tyler Flowers (.308), Adeiny Hechavarria (.294) and Austin Riley (.285) are all in play. Freeman, Joyce and Markakis all have a xwOBA over .400 over the past 2 weeks. Swanson and Hechavarria are batting 1-2 in the order and are both $4k or less on Draftkings and $2.7k or less on Fanduel. Markakis, Joyce and Flowers are all below $3.9k on Draftkings and $2.9k on Fanduel. Billy Hamilton is also an option for GPPs, as he has stolen base upside and is near minimum price on both sites.

RHBs have hammered Jacob Waguespack (.367 wOBA, .392 xwOBA)

Jacob Waguespack does not miss bats (18.6 K%) and owns an 88.9 mph aEV with a 3.63 ERA predicated on a .267 BABIP and 10.7 HR/FB that are likely to regress. Non-FIP estimators are closer to five, but the interesting thing is that he’s shown a reverse split thus far with RHBs (.367 wOBA) 160 points better than LHBs (.207) and this is well supported by Statcast (.392 xwOBA, .275) as well as 44.8 Hard% and 39.1 GB% for same handed batters (LHBs 30.4 Hard%, 46.4 GB%). For an Atlanta offense above five implied runs (5.13), that makes Ronald Acuna Jr. (124 wRC+, .211 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Josh Donaldson (131 wRC+, .259 ISO) the most interesting bats here and potentially makes Francisco Cervelli (four extra-base hits in nine PAs for Atlanta) and Dansby Swanson (92 wRC+, .184 ISO) your value plays. Cervelli costs less than $3K on either site.

Hot Braves lineup takes on struggling Trevor Richards at home

Overall, Trevor Richards has a 4.02 ERA that has been suppressed by pitching half his games in Marlins park; he also has a 5.25 xFIP, 5.05 SIERA on the year with a 41.3% hard contact rate, 10.8% K-BB and 43.5% FB rate. Richards has been even worse over the past 30 days with a 5.20 ERA, 5.25 xFIP and 5.30 SIERA with a 8.3% K-BB. The Marlins also have a 5th worst 4.56 bullpen SIERA over the past 30 days. The Braves come into this game with a 2nd best 121 wRC+ over the past 30 days and have a number of good options in their lineup at home vs. Richards and the Marlins. Freddie Freeman (.418 xwOBA vs. RHP), Ronald Acuna (.383), Josh Donaldson (.376), Nick Markakis (.370), Dansby Swanson (.369), Ozzie Albies (.344), Brian McCann (.342) and Austin Riley (.318) make up the 8 hitters in the ATL lineup and all are in play this afternoon. Donaldson and Markakis stand out as the best values as they are both below $4.5K on Draftkings while Acuna, Swanson, Freeman and Riley are all $5k or more. Acuna has been their hottest hitter with a .402 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks, while Austin Riley (.227) has cooled down after his hot start to the year. The Braves currently have a healthy 5.66 implied total vs. Richards and the Marlins today in Atlanta.

Braves bats in a great spot vs. projected long-reliever Irvin

The Braves will face an opener (Vince Velasquez) and then project to face Cole Irvin in long-relief Sunday. Irvin has a 5.48 ERA, 4.81 xFIP, 4.66 SIERA, 13.2 K-BB%, 47% hard contact rate, just a 30% GB rate and a 10.2% SwStr over 21 innings in 2019. Per Statcast, Irvin has a .347 xwOBA allowed and 7.6% barrel rate with an 85.4 aEV. The Braves have destroyed left-handed pitching on the year and have a lineup full of options this afternoon. Austin Riley (.579 xwOBA vs. LHP this year, 26 PA), Ronald Acuna Jr. (.441), Freddie Freeman (.406), Ozzie Albies (.401), Dansby Swanson (.397) and Josh Donaldson (.354) are all good options. Braves bats could be a good contrarian play vs. Mikolas

After a great year in his first year back in the States, Miles Mikolas has looked much more hittable in 2019. He has a 4.88 ERA / 4.46 SIERA with an 11.7% K-BB and 33.9% hard contact rate. Many of Mikolas’ numbers look almost identical to 2018: His K%, BB%, BABIP, hard and soft contact %, GB and FB% are all shockingly similar to 2019. His biggest issue has been home runs and louder contact overall, as he had just a 0.72 HR/9 in 2018 but has a 1.63 HR/9 this year. Statcast shows increases in aEV (up 2.5 MPH), barrel% (up 2.7%) and xwOBA (up .054) from 2018 to this year. The Braves have tons of pop vs. RHP in their projected lineup, with everyone besides Ozzie Albies having an xwOBA greater than .350 vs. RHP so far this year. Dansby Swanson looks like a great value, projected to bat 2nd at just $4k on Draftkings with a a.350 xwOBA vs. RHP. Josh Donaldson projects to hit 4th at $4.1k and has a .367 xwOBA vs. RHP. Freddie Freeman (.429 xwOBA vs. RHP this year) seems to be worth a shot at his price of $5.2k. He has been especially hot with a .473 xwOBA over the past 10 days, 2nd to only Austin Riley (.524). The Braves have a 4.23 implied total for this game which does feel a tad low.

Braves in Good Spot Vs. Pitcher Returning From IL

The Braves are at home facing Chase Anderson and the Brewers tonight with a solid 4.85 implied total. After a rough 2018, Chase Anderson started the year in the bullpen and threw 19.2 innings for the Brewers before hitting the IL with a finger injury. In 2018, Anderson posted a 4.79 xFIP / 4.68 SIERA with an ugly 34.5% FB rate and a 1.71 HR/9. Anderson was actually much worse vs. RHB last year with a .367 xwOBA allowed vs. righties compared to a .293 xwOBA allowed vs. lefties, which is very close to his career splits (.300 wOBA vs. LHB, .341 vs. RHB). Ronald Acuna Jr. (.383 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Josh Donaldson (.367), Dansby Swanson (.341), and Austin Riley (.575, 11 PA) are all great right-handed options in the Braves’ lineup tonight. Even with Anderson’s platoon splits, Freddie Freeman (.402 xwOBA vs. RHP this year) is also a great play tonight as usual. Also working in Braves hitters’ favor is a very hitter-friendly umpire in Jeff Kellogg.

Strong Upside

The Braves will be one of the more popular offenses to choose from this afternoon, and I like their potential upside against Matt Strahm. We haven't seen Strahm put up a profile as solid as other new rotation mate Chris Paddack, although Strahm's surface numbers aren't horrible. His advanced metrics show a 4.76 xFIP and a 45% hard contact rate allowed, which is danger against this Atlanta offense. I'll side with Albies as my top offensive option, as he should be in the leadoff spot against a lefty in Matt Strahm. That gives him an opportunity to possibly get five at-bats today, and Albies has stronger career splits against LHP with a .342 batting average and .399 wOBA. Acuna, Swanson, and the rest of the lineup make for nice adds to a GPP stack.
