Cheap Right-Handed Platoon Bats Project As Highest Value Stack

While the two Coors offenses top the slate at 5.5 implied runs, there’s really a cluster of five teams with team run totals exceeding five tonight. The result of this cluster is that no stack really dominates ownership projections tonight with the White Sox (visiting Coors) are the only one to reach even a double digit ownership expectation and only on DraftKings tonight. However, we find a non-Coors stack sitting in the Smash% driver’s seat tonight and it’s the same stack that failed so many of us last night…the Dodgers. Surprisingly, the gap between them and the rest of the board is larger today than yesterday, when they were half a run removed from the rest of the board. Dodger stacks smash more than 13% of simulations with no other stack doing so more than 8.5% of the time. The Giants were the top value stack yesterday and they retain that projection with the same pitcher tonight because Tyler Gilbert was scratched and move back a start. Due to their lack of playing time, some of the better platoon RHBs are always underpriced and since the Giants platoon more than any other offense, you’ll often find them projecting for great value against all but the top lefties in the league. The Dodgers rewarded backers with only a single run last night, but were merely a marginally rated stack. Do they project a better Leverage Rating on a more clustered top of the board tonight? RHBs Have Smashed This Pitcher for a .400 xwOBA Since Last Year

On a nearly full 13 game slate, it’s almost shocking that no team exceeds five implied runs tonight, although we are still dealing with cooler April weather. The Yankees (vs Eli Morgan), Angels (vs Bruce Zimmermann), Astros (vs Ross Stripling) and Giants (at Patrick Corbin) are the only teams even above 4.5 run totals tonight. When we filter by overall projected point totals (PlateIQ), we see Shohei Ohtani (148 wRC+, .356 ISO vs RHP since 2021) and Mike Trout (111 wRC+, .065 ISO) at the very top. If that’s a surprising ISO for Trout, recognize it includes just 63 PAs. Batters from either side of the plate are above a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against Bruce Zimmermann since last season. Other teams to find multiple batters inside the top ten projected point totals on either site are the Yankees (Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton), Giants (Darin Ruf and Austin Slater) and Astros (Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman).

Judge (140 wRC+, .231 ISO vs LHP since LY) and Stanton (133 wRC+, .243 ISO) facing a barrel prone (11.8% of contact last year) lefty (Eli Morgan) at home. Of course. Alvarez (144 wRC+, .273 ISO) and Bregman (166 wRC+, .169 ISO) are facing a pitcher (Ross Stripling) who has allowed batters from either side of the plate a .333 or better wOBA and xwOBA since last season. The Giants face Patrick Corbin , who really hasn’t been as bad as his 7.50 ERA through three starts. In fact, having not allowed a home runs, he has a FIP of just 3.49, but 4.73 xERA on just 2.5% Barrels/BBE. Corbin has just a 5.0 K-BB% and appalling 93.9 Z-Contact%. His velocity was down to 90 mph with just a 5.4 SwStr% in his last start and RHBs have smashed him since the start of last season (.374 wOBA, .400 xwOBA). In addition to Ruf (156 wRC+, .291 ISO vs LHP since 2021) and Slater (126 wRC+, .220 ISO), consider Wilmer Flores (112 wRC+, .171 ISO) at just $200 removed from $3K on either site. In fact, Thairo Estrada (67 wRC+, .131 ISO) is the only projected right-handed San Francisco starter to reach the $4K price point on DK tonight, which is why you'll also find many Giants among the top projected values tonight as well.

This Lineup Torches Southpaws

Theoretically, a matchup pitting a pitcher with more walks than strikeouts against one who’s dropped over 2.5 mph in velocity would be a daily fantasy offensive hotspot, but neither team in San Francisco finds themselves at the top of tonight’s board on a five game slate. In fact, the Marlins have the second lowest implied run line on the board. San Francisco may no longer be the extremely negative run environment it once was, but weather conditions aren’t expected to favor hitters tonight either.

In his first start, also against the Giants, Daniel Castano walked two of 19 without a strikeout (2.7 SwStr%). In 34.2 innings of major league work now, he’s walked one more than he’s struck out. The Giants haven’t been as explosive against LHP this year with just a 97 wRC+, but It’s still an extremely small sample from a lineup that has history of smoking marginal left-handed arms. While he’s held RHBs to a .290 wOBA, Statcast has batters from both sides within eight points of a .340 xwOBA against Castano. Each of the first five batters in the projected lineup for the Giants exceeds a 130 wRC+ and .240 ISO vs LHP since 2019. Darin Ruf is the minimum ($2K) on FanDuel, although you may have to worry about him being lifted later in the game.

The other side of this matchup is more difficult because Aaron Sanchez has lost 2.6 mph of velocity since we last saw him in 2019, but has actually improved upon some of his results. Strikeouts aren’t one of those results though (19%), while he’s been limited to 82 pitches or less in all three starts. His 4.4% Barrels/BBE, 88.6 mph EV and 55.6 GB% are all slightly better than career rates too, as is his 9.9 SwStr%. It’s an extremely small sample, of course, but he’s down to less than 50% fastballs (both four-seam and sinkers) in favor of 32.4% curveballs. Maybe something he picked up in Houston? A predominantly RH lineup, the Marlins have just an 84 wRC+ vs RHP this year. The Marlins don’t have a batter in the projected lineup above a 118 wRC+ vs RHP since 2019 and only four above a .150 ISO. Sanchez could be fine from a run prevention standpoint for $7.1K on DraftKings, but don’t expect him to exceed 20 points.

Cheap middle of the order power (.321 ISO vs LHP since 2019)

Kyle Freeland has been a productive contact manager (52.6 GB%, 86.8 mph EV), but with just a 16.3 K%, he’s still allowed seven HRs. An ERA below four (3.75) is mostly the product of an elevated strand rate (78.5%). All of his estimators are at least half a run higher, but all are below five at least. The Giants have been one of the best offenses in baseball against LHP this year (125 wRC+, 19.4 HR/FB). They have the ability to stack the entire lineup with RHBs and batters from that side of the plate are above a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against Freeland since last season. In a smaller sample this year (203 PAs), they are at just a .308 wOBA though. However, considering the projected San Francisco lineup features six batters above a 125 wRC+ against LHP since last season (30 PA min.) and none cost more than $3.1K on FanDuel, there should be some value in this lineup with the largest portion of it potentially coming from the bat of Darin Ruf (145 wRC+, .321 ISO), who costs just $2.4K and has a 186 wRC+ overall for the last 30 days.
