David Bote Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Kris Bryant (back) scratched Saturday; David Bote replaces

Bryant has been scratched from the Chicago Cubs original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to lingering back tightness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by David Bote, who will play third base and slot into the ninth spot in the order, which bumps Ian Happ up eight spots to the leadoff position, respectively. However, the remainder of the Cubs lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Mitch Keller at home this evening.

Odd lineup construction for one of tonight's top projected offenses

The Cubs (5.5) are one of just two teams above five implied runs tonight against Francisco Liriano, who has the highest xwOBA on the board (.381) among those with more than just a couple of starts. His ERA estimators are all well above five and RHBS have a .371 wOBA against him this year. So it makes perfect sense that the Cubs will bat all three of their LHBs (.227 wOBA, 55.8 GB% vs Liriano) among the first five in the order tonight, including brand new leadoff man Daniel Murphy (56 wRC+, .100 ISO vs LHP last calendar year). Perhaps Maddon is thinking of advantages later on in the game since Liriano outings generally don't last very long (averaging just five innings per start with a mediocre bullpen behind him - 4.15 FIP, 15.8 K-BB% last 30 days). Javier Baez (133 wRC+, .240 ISO) is the coveted bat here. He, David Bote (139 wRC+, .188 ISO) and Willson Contreras (128 wRC+, .175 ISO), both near the bottom of the order are the only thee batters in the lineup above a 100 wRC+ and 105 ISO vs LHP over the last calendar year.

Great Matchup For This Value Bat

The Cubs are a top offense for me tonight, and I'll really like the right-handed hitters that are in the lineup. Liriano has a .379 wOBA with a .204 ISO and a 35.2% hard-hit rate against right-handed hitters this season. He has really struggled with command, and it's been one of his worst seasons against righties in particular. David Bote has a small sample size in the Majors, but the stats look promising, as he has a .188 ISO with a .381 wOBA and a .559 CXwOBA in 40 PAs against lefties. He should hit third or fourth tonight for the Cubs, and I love his value at this price point.

A Struggling Offense With Affordable Prices and a Juicy Matchup

There isn't a ton of obvious value on this slate tonight, so I'll lump the Cubs' value bats together as top plays and/or as a sneaky GPP stack. This team is going to break out at some point, as they have scoerd exactly one run in five straight games. That has the prices down on their hitters, and they face a consistently inconsistent lefty in Francisco Liriano, who simply can't throw strikes on a regular basis. David Bote, Albert Almora, and Willson Contreras are all dirt cheap, making the Cubs an intriguing GPP stack tonight that will also allow you to spend up in other spots of your lineup. All three of these value bats have wOBA marks over .355 against LHP this year, and of course you could also add Javier Baez if you are looking to spend up a little more.

Left-handed value against a pitcher with terrible platoon splits

Ivan Nova is not the worst pitcher on the board and has only allowed six of his 20 HRs this season at home. He does have just a 16.5 K% with a league average ground ball rate and 89.4 mph aEV this season. With an additional problem against LHBs, (.362 wOBA, .389 xwOBA), that portion of the Cubs' lineup does look attractive tonight in a park that suppresses RH power, but is more neutral towards LH, despite their 4.35 implied run line that sits in the middle of the board tonight. Anthony Rizzo (139 wRC+, .223 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Jason Heyward (106 wRC+, .138 ISO) both hit in the top half of the lineup. Ian Happ (123 wRC+, .225 ISO) bats fifth. Additionally, only Rizzo is above $4K on DK or $3K on FD among those LH bats. Javier Baez (118 wRC+, .251 ISO) is even more expensive on DraftKings, but David Bote (156 wRC+, .200 ISO) could be a bargain from the three hole. He's one of just two batters in the lineup (Albert Almora is the other) above a 30 Hard% over the last week.

Clean Up With Value

With Matt Kemp out of the lineup tonight, I'll turn to the Cubs for some value bats. I also like Tim Beckham as a multi-position salary saver, but with David Bote hitting cleanup for the Cubs, he is my preferred option. We're still looking at a small sample size, but Bote has a 43% hard hit rate since being clled up after hitting 13 HR in 61 games at Triple-A. He is showing patience at the plate, and should have runners on base ahead of him tonight against a low strikeout pitcher and a bad bullpen.

Cheap exposure to the middle of tonight's top projected lineup

The Cubs are currently the high team on the board at 5.49 implied runs in Kansas City. Heath Fillmyer (14 K%, 5.14 SIERA) has generated a lot of weak contact (3.2% Barrels/BBE, 28.4% 95+ mph EV) on the ground (53.7%) to compensate for other inefficiencies, but has actually allowed same-handed batters a .376 wOBA and 51.1 Hard% in his four major league starts. He is backed by one of the worst bullpens in baseball and has gone more than five innings just once so far. A pitcher with a 2.3 K-BB% against an offense with an 11.0 K-BB% vs RHP, this is a stacking situation, where players are looking for walks to turn into runs and big innings. The are giving daily fantasy players a gift with David Bote (168 wRC+, .206 ISO vs RHP) batting cleanup, offering cheap exposure ($3.7K DK, $2.6K FD) to the middle of the top lineup. Considering the reverse split so far, Javier Baez (123 wRC+, .260 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) might be the most interesting bat here, but is also easily the most expensive.

The Chalk Value Emerges

With the Cubs resting Anthony Rizzo today, three of their top 4 hitters provide excellent value on a slate where their opening Vegas line was above seven (7!) runs thanks to strong winds blowing out at Wrigley. Albert Almora, David Bote, and Addison Russel are all 2.6 K or less on FanDuel and 3.8 K or less on DraftKings. They each make great value plays at the top of a lineup that should turn over early and often, and should be expected to carry a lot of ownership thanks to the Cubs' eye-popping Vegas total.
